Okay but Red Shy Guy is a STUD in Super Mario Baseball and nothing will take away his GOAT status

I appreciate that you bring up Boos because they literally have the same gimmick as boos in having wacky names based on "shy guy" (as boos do in the luigis mansion franchise). The difference is, shy guy variants are treated as unique species, whereas Boos are treated as unique characters of the same species. I think you're right. Shy Guys are just easy variants to make, rather than making new character designs. Need a flying enemy? shy guy with propeller. Need a pointy enemy? shy guy with spear. Need an exploding enemy? shy guy with bomb.
Instead of giving us more classic mario enemys (which would have much more potential for merch capital, btw), they just recycle the same easy to draw and model guys. They also only use the mystique of what's under the shy guy masks once in a throwaway cutscene. wasted yet overused material.

I forgot the word for it, but there's a term used in writing for things that you throw in to make the plot make sense. Like if there's something in Star Wars that has a gap ITS THE FORCE, weird thing in Zelda that doesn't make much sense? TRIFORCE. I feel like Shy Guys are used in Mario RPGs to bridge the gap in plot when they don't want to make a whole new character. I know those aren't exactly the same things, but I hope I make sense.
I want to like Shy Guys, but every time I see them I feel like they are taking up space for a potential new character.
Hopefully Nintendo will one day be more adventurous with their characters again.

@BubbleRift A plot device, but I would liken it more to asset reuse. And yes, Nintendo has been doing this for years. Once a game they'll introduce a single new species (if we're lucky) to fill out all of the necessary roles in a game's climate, either as good or bad guys, and then just use old character designs for the rest of the roster. Think Piantas from Sunshine, or Lumas. Odyssey proves that every single world can individually have different enemies and new types of character designs and still work cohesively in a game's world. It's fine to stick with Goombas and Koopas but if it gets in the way of a gameplay purpose that warrants a new character design its just lazy.
The Paper Mario games are notorious for this. I'm not even a paper mario fan and I'm intimately familiar with the fact that old paper marios would get original characters (if not necessarily original character designs) and run with fleshing out those characters, like goombella and other helpers, whereas modern ones will just give you Toad #4,935 and Luigi. Superstar Saga introduced the Bean characters which had a whole slew of different character designs and themes and it was super unique and interesting.
There is something to be said for reusing classic character designs, because people grow affinities to them. DKCR and TF are consistently slammed for using new original rosters of enemies and not using the Kremlings, but the difference there is that they haven't seen Kremlings in a proper DK game a) for over 20 years and b) in anything beyond 64 bits. They've been given time for people to miss them. Shy Guys are in every single mario spinoff and it just gets old and stale.

I mean they are Super Mario characters. They are among Bowser troops as seen in Yoshi's Island, the RPG games, Paper Games, and in SM64. Some are not part of Bowser's army like how some Koopas aren't. We see this in SMB2USA and these specific Shy Guys go on to become friendly rivals to Mario in Superstar Baseball.
As for Zelda, I mean Lakitus, Goombas, Wart, and Chain Chomps also have their own versions in those games too.
As for the variation, there various species of Koopas. And Toads come in various shapes, sizes, and appearances.

    • @BubbleRift
      @BubbleRift  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Literal Shy Guys only appear in 2 KINDOF mainline Super Mario Games. One is more of a Yoshi game and the other was Doki Doki Panic. Chainchomps and all those other enemies (besides Wart) appear in lots of Super Mario titles

@@BubbleRift while I get the concept of mainline games, I mostly reject it since it ignores all the other games that have an affect on the Mario canon. Not to mention how people always fight and argue on what is a mainline game always trying to exclude so many games from the list, or claim if they aren't a mainline game they aren't canon.

@@Eris1987 "Super Mario" is a whole different series from those other games. Canon or not, this video is from the context of the "Super Mario" series. You wouldn't bring up Metroid Pinball when talking about "Metroid" games or Fallout: Shelter when talking "Fallout" games. Those are their own things

@@BubbleRift personally I don't know about the lore of Metroid and Fallout, so I can't speak on those personally.
Saying the "Super Mario" series is too vague, and gets into the whole thing of interpretation thing of what some thinks what is.
For example, if I were to say the "Super Mario" series I would consider it everything that falls under the category of being part of the Canon of Mario Tales.
So from there all the games that are part of that I would regard as part of the "Super Mario" Series.
But someone else might say it's all the games but Paper Mario and the RPG games. Someone might say it's all the games except for Donkey Kong or Donkey Country. Someone might say it's everything but the sports, party, and karting games. Someone might say it's everything but WarioWare or Luigi's Mansion. Someone might say it's everything but the games starring Yoshi or Peach. Someone might say it's all the 2D and 3D platformer except for Super Mario Land, Super Mario Bros the Lost Levels, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Super Mario Bros 2 USA, B S Super Mario USA, Super Mario 3D Land, and Super Mario 64 DS. In addition to any combination of everything I just said.

@@Eris1987 "Super Mario" isn't really vague outside of a few titles like Super Mario World 2 and some bizarre stuff during the NES era like Super Mario Bros Special.
I get that you have your own definition of what a Super Mario game is, but your definition is not the commonly accepted one and I think I made it pretty clear where I was speaking from
I feel like jumping on some small new YTer's channel to try to WELL ACTUALLY is scummy behavior.

But by this same logic paragoombas ans spiked goombas are different species from regular goomba. Im pretty sure the reason a shyguy is no longer called a shy guy is thats no longer his defining trait when he carries a spear everywhere hes called spear guy. There are even versions that dont contain guy in their name such as the sniffits which are shy guys that have some sort of gun mask that lets them shoot bullets (
