    I considered this type of press but wanted ultimate sturdy press and bought MEC press based on your review and others. I can say I am very happy with it. I wanted something really accurate and the same time sturdy enough for when I am converting brass which takes tremendous force. The coolest thing about MEC press is that it has ability to accept quick change bushings from Hornady with adapter meant for RCBS rock chucker but works with MEC too. It allows me to quickly change dies but yet they are sturdy unlike Co-Ax design and yet I still have some floating in the shell holder I prefer that much better. I am loading my rifle rounds on it and pistol round on Hornady LNL progressive.

    Thanks for another great video! I would love to see the same test done on the Redding turret press and compare the two. Thanks!

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Ray Wolsefer - This press was made to directly compete with the Redding turret - both are solid presses without backlash in the turret positions. There have been no run out videos on the Redding done by anyone as far as we can determine. Perhaps a Redding Turret owner will do one. My take on this is that the Redding will not be superior and likely will be on par with this new Lyman press. The only way the Redding would beat this Lyman is if the run outs on the Redding would all be approaching zero. If that were the case, all the benchrest shooters and the AMU would be using the Redding turret. Not having owned the Redding, it still appears from the Redding videos out there that the quality of both these presses in terms of materials and construction are also on par. The formula for low run out ammo is easily set - Consistent brass and bullets // Lee Neck Size Collet Die // good quality in line bullet seating dies // Good alignment reloading press. Benchresters would substitute hand dies and arbor presses in the equipment mix. Merry Christmas to ya..!! FC Steve

      @FortuneCookie45LC  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nick Ross - Thanks, Nick. And as for the Restraining Bolt (Star Wars no less), Lee could easily have come up with that, but I fervently hope the reason was not that they might want the wooden blocks to slide out so more of the steel flange locking plates would be purchased by reloaders. That is a brief flash of my cynical side. Merry Christmas to ya, Nick and to all of yours as well.... Steve

    Runout is really considered good if it's under .004". You did a great job of reviewing the press, kudos. I'd prefer to say that the differences in the seating depth aren't the press but likely the head of the brass being slightly off. Ive had that happen with all types of rifle brass, and for some reason it seems to be worse with the smaller caliber rifle cartridges and less prevalent with the larger cartridges. I would hypothesize this is due the lower amount of brass in the cup vs a larger caliber cup.

    I just figured out the MEC Marksman handle fits on the Lyman All American press. I can't entirely explain why, but I made the switch and now like the feel of the Lyman press even better with the angled MEC handle installed. At least this is partly because the MEC handle gives more clearance when sitting in front of the press, but overall the ergonomics seem better. Knowing you have both presses, you should try the MEC handle on the Lyman press and see what you think.

    Hey FC...nice job on getting to know your press.
    As I understand you, you will correct for depth with the miked seating die...but runout can only be corrected by using the best station(s) with the least of the group. Correct?
    How much would be too much, making the press unacceptable?
    Presumably, different turrets will produce different results too, right?
    Also...who's making the best (highest quality) dies?

    Hey Steve, hope you and the family had a great Christmas. I"m sure watching the ham get sliced for some Brochette you guys ate well :-) I've been thinking seriously of getting this press over the RCBS Rockchucker Single Stage Press and treating it like a single stage. If I were to put a seating die for one caliber in one hole and leave it there all the time adjusting it for that caliber and a different seating die for another caliber in a different hole I should be fine, this press should be a winner. Any thoughts ? Have watched this video a few times now and I think it would be OK !

      Martin Scharf - Having two or more of these turrets for interchanging is not in my plans - If I use good die lock rings like the Forsters or Hornadys, switching out the dies would readily be done. The turrets are also on the pricey side, not like the interchange toolheads on the Dillon progressives. Merry Christmas to you.... FC Steve

    Great video and thank you very much! Does the spent primer system work well?

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lance Vaughn - I was surprised at the low run out this press offered, but then again even my cheapie Lee Custom Cast did the same as long as the good dies were used. Plus this press has very stable indexing as well. The best presses only beat the others by a factor of less than .001" less run out. We can get run out between zero and .001". The average shooter will never see any differences - would take a skilled long range shooter to tell. And even then, there would be the case for using hand dies and arbor presses. If I use my Co-Ax or MEC Marksman, or Redding equipment - it's really because I want to use some nice stuff or the same equipment favored by the AMU, etc. (And the Hornady case gauge with run out "correction" need not apply as the "correction" damages the neck tension) The spent primer system works 90% of the time. A dead primer will come to life and jump the receptacle every 10 cases or so. That the primer system does not allow easy viewing of the primer in the arm is a disadvantage it did not feed primers reliably from the tube - however, a change in primer brands might cure that. Have a great day, FC Steve

    FC 45 LC, I am losing confidence in Lyman after the put out their Mag25 casting furnace designed with a mould guide that will not accept Lee 6 cavity moulds…. They blew me off when I called their customer service. As an innovator myself, I sought out an after market solution. Presto! For $25 found a guide made for Lyman Mag25 made by NOE, an innovator company helping Lyman consumers. As for turret presses, have you reviewed the Redding T3 Turret Press….Redding is another major innovator company too. I love the quality and content of your channel.

  • @livincincy4498

    I like the Forester Lock rings... They seem to be an alternative to the Lee or Hornady Bushing systems. I have also seen where (2) die rings have been used.
    It seems that Priming on the Press is something that is of questionable importance to the Brass Smith line-up. I suspect a Lyman Brass Smith Bench Prime tool is on its way. The RCBS turret press seems to have the best ergonomic layout for the priming system... but that is the only favorable report on the RCBS Turret Press I found.
    I like the idea of (8) stations... I think. It seems like your have a lot of flexibility with multiple die sets.
    For Pistol I think the indexing Lee 4 die turret presses are better than this do to speed.

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Carlos - Most would readily agree with you on the Lee turret for handgun ammo - it really does crank 'em out...and the backlash on the Lee makes no significant problem for handgun ammo. I wish that reloading companies would offer their presses with option for sans the priming systems for those who will not be using them - would lower the cost of the presses significantly. With the new press offerings, it's a great time for new reloaders coming on the scene..!! Merry Christmas to ya..!! Steve

      @@FortuneCookie45LC - Merry Christmas to you as well !!!! Hope buying another press did not put you on Santa's Naughty List !
      I like the simplicity of a Turret. I think they clearly aimed at the T-7 by Redding with this press. Sometimes Precision can be a marketing draw that most shooters will never notice do to the short range they are shooting. I think Lyman will sell a lot of these.
      I like the small C Frame Lyman Press. It reminds me of the Lee small C-Frame. It cost more than the Lee but I like the way it looks, functions and being cast iron. Here again Lyman took good aim on Lee.
      We are living in a good time for new reloading presses. I suspect we will see more improved designs from others now that Lyman improved its game. We also have Franklin Arsenal entering the foray of press design.

Which you think is the best upgrade between this Lyman press here and the new Lee press (the one that is sort of a small progressive press, but really isn't, and is really inexpensive until you add up the parts each caliber requires that must be purchased separately {not the dies, I have all those})?

      VP - It really is amazing - kind of dispells the thinking that turret presses are not as consistent. These are all still single stage presses doing one procedure on one case at a time. However, as these turret presses wear and the lockup loosens up, the run outs may very well double. That would still be low for most of our applications however... Perhaps we shouldn't be too surprised - with computerized systems creating alignment, why shouldn't we get good concentricity right from the get go... When you shook the rotating die plate I noticed some movement that could easily translate in to few thousands of inches and that means that can introduce variances. If you have a magnetic base dial indicator like one machinists use, I would put it under and wiggle that plate and see how much the needle moves, that could be an eye opener. Another thing is how you setup your die and locking ring, as you know the the threads in the die are coarse and have lot of play so it's possible to lock the ring slightly off center. So the way you make sure is you run the case with bullet seated already up than screw the die until it touches the bullet snugly than you tighten and lock the ring and recommend to use Lee locking ring it's going to be more true. Also I would ditch that wooden Lee block, mine would slip out no matter how I tightened it.

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      DP - That movement was only in the case we insert into the shell holder - there is often some bounce when we put the case in the shell holder, and I tried to guide and steady those cases as the ram went up. There is no backlash movement in the press itself, and that might actually be a detriment if there is misalignment in the press ram and the die stations. DP - good quality components plus good seating dies still make the big difference, but only if the press is not a negative. And I am satisfied that this press allows the other factors to strut their stuff. The final run out is what counts and it was very positive in this test. Unless I got an exceptional specimen of this turret press, Lyman is on par with all the other fine presses from Redding, RCBS, Hornady and Lee. Best to ya, DP and thanks for the info on what machinist use for their determinations - that would make for good testing of all presses like this - someone should do that / those videos. FC Steve

    • @DimaProk
      @DimaProk 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FortuneCookie45LC I meant the play in the rotating top ring that I called "shell plate" wrongfully. at 6:10 time mark. It could be the press itself moving though on that wooden block. I agree with quality dies. Once I tried RCBS gold match die I was blown away how well it works, but you're right with end result being how much run out your get. I believe the brass here plays a major role and I trust Lapua it's awesome! I paid 70 bucks for 100 cases of 221 fireball and now I was very lucky to win some so 400 more coming my way!

    Hey Steve, great job. Never seen those things tested on this press.i’ve been thinking of getting this press as a single stage for loading rifle brass.
    It’s like a real single stage with the advantage of a turret style. I was going back and forth between this one and the actual single stage one they have. I love the idea of just rotating the head to change dies. I wanted a nice heavy an sturdy press for rifle loading.
    PS: Do you like their regular single stage press ?

      Nick J - The Brass Smith line includes the regular non turret single stage. Have not tried that one as I have others. There are definitely some press parts that are interchangeable, though - like the priming system and leverage. You have the fun of choosing between many great presses. When it comes to regular single stage, even the Lee Custom Cast is a superb press. RCBS Rockchucker, Hornady, Redding and the new Lyman - all are superb presses. Merry Christmas to you.... Steve

      Hey Steve, thank you for all the help in doing these reviews. I looked at the Lyman Single Stage one, it has not had time to collect a lot of reviews yet :-( I looked at the other presses you mentioned and decided to go with the RCBS Rockchucker. Want to start loading 6.5 Grendel and Creedmoor, I feel the RCBS will be heavy duty enough for that. Merry Christmas from Gig Harbor, Nick
      PS: Any plans in the New Year to head up this way ?

    If you are going to drill through the bench anyway, why use the Lee Bench Plate? Why not bolt directly to the bench? I just watched your other video on the priming system. In that video, you can see the movement of the press relative to the bench on each stroke. That movement would drive me bonkers. YMMV.

    Another good thing is the press is made in the USA

    I am more bothered by the seating depth variance with station 3 than you seem to be. Was #3 the only one that varied? One would have to pay attention to which die goes where or have to readjust every die every time. It wouldn't just be the seating die either. Sizing and shoulder bump would also be off wouldn't it?

    The information result from your testing was well worth the trouble and time invested.
    The overall presentation was testing on my patience. You seem very intelligent, but the visual distraction of your bench in disarray made focusing on your content difficult.

    Hi Steve , Mate Gavintoobe on Utube will be reviewing 11 reloading presses soon , i thought you might like his content thats why i sent you the link bellow . In my comments to Gavintoobe i sent him the link to your review of the Lyman Turret press and asked him if he can perform a similar concenticity test on each station like you have in this video. Hopefully many watching Gavintoobe will check out your very informative videos also .

      Jim Gourlas - Sounds like Gavin is doing giveaways to promo his site - that's very fine. My own policy is that I check out the giveaways, but let someone else win those because I'm really a poster like Gavin is - he wants to get new viewers (consumers). For example - if ThorsAxe were to win a giveaway that I would do - I'd much rather give him the stuff as we posters tend to interchange stuff. Plus, viewers support me by sending me various stuff. A contest has intention behind it - if another poster wins, that isn't the intention. However, that video coming up where he compares all those presses - now I want to tune in on that one for sure.... Best of 2019 to ya, Steve

    Not a fan of this press!!
    Way too much slop on the die plate, top of a 6.5 die moves .
    . 007!!!!
    If it doesn't ruin the brass on sizeing, it will if you try to seat a compressed load!!
    I had to take .015 off the center bushing to tighten the plate to the press.. no longer indexes though!

    I usually love your work but this video has some serious statistical flaws. You're drawing conclusions based on a statistically insignificant sample size without out any of the standard input process variable control tests. You're assuming all of your components are identical, that's not a reasonable assumption.
    If you'd like me to walk you through generating a statistically relevant DOE to determine the real capability of this press I'd be more than happy to.
