Using a combination of naturally sourced pigments from around the world and chemically producing my own, I combined them with hand grown flaxseed oil to make an oil painting entirely from scratch,

I don't know why, but watching Andy, a seemingly ordinary guy, making a bunch of things that I see as impossible, makes me really happy. It makes me feel like I can also do things I feel are impossible. He's awesome
Unusual Person_me It really is inspiring. It makes me want to go out and do more things like this
A message from your friendly neighbourhood chemistry undergrad. Empty you suction filter flask more often because as the vacuum pull it will cause any solvents to evaporate in the flask which will reduced the efficiency o the filtration 🙂🙂 this is especially important if our making something that needs to be as dry as possible before its used (like a pigment for an oil paint 😝😝)
Not to mention that he used way to small of a beaker, he need to do a wash to get the impurities out of the copper carbonate
@Dimitry Shitarev they were too busy studying for their midterm
NileRed would be proud of the chemistry in this video
Jared Newbery that's exactly what I was thinking of!!
I thought it was Nile Reid
It is all quite simple, and his methods are quite crude and wasteful
Botong Lin not unlike a NileRed video! /s
Not using too little words to describe
That painting you made is actually very good. Not gonna lie
Making a long line with "chalk". Subtle but hilarious.
Not very subtle...
@@tomf3150 yea I guess, now that I think about it, he let it sink in for a while.
I thought that was rlly funny too
@phuc ewe 😂
I was half expecting him to roll up a dollar bill and snort it
No one:
Andy: *makes line of white powder*
Me: *slow claps*
It would be cool to see an actual artist make a painting with your paint and brushes.
DRAW WITH JAZZA
You know, I don't think he did a terrible job as far as things go.
this!
That's what I was hoping for too. Maybe if he fixes some of the issues, he could collab with a youtube painter.
What do you mean "actual artist"?
Dude, I know you're not an artist by trade, but the lake you made in your Bob Ross painting looks amazing.
I actually like your painting. solid 8/10
Yeah I'm quite impressed by Andy, it's better than anything i could do.
69/10
@@nikolaykirilov8101 nice
I agree, it was actually very nice.
@@nikolaykirilov8101 at least
Everyone: expects Andy to make a really shit painting
Andy: actually tries and looks decent
Loving the bob ross love in the Title. He was an inspiration for me in my childhood.
It is cool to see how far you've come on the chemistry side, being able to produce things that you struggled with so much in the past. AWESOME!
also, it can't be bob ross without TITANIUM white (but a good impression none the less).
'Do you want to see how it ages ? In 5 years bring your paints again' man I never laughed so hard
whats so funny about it? I like the idea
I don't think it would decay since it's an oil painting. I could be wrong.
@@abyssstrider2547 Some paints age worse than others, especially when manufactured incorrectly. They wouldn't really be looking at "decay", either. They'd be looking at surface quality, lightfastness, cracking, etc
@@Gringle_ I guess so
Not paints again but painting in.
Kid: Mom can we stop by and get some Bob ross.
Mom: no we have Bob Ross at home
Bob Ross at home: 12:14
I’m actually super impressed by your painting! I love watching your fails (no offense), but this was definitely a win!!
His fails are the more entertaining parts ~
If you want purple pigment grow red climbing spinach which grows purple berry seeds that has a bright purple pigment, it's almost like ink and stains hands easily, might be a way to make a powder with it if needed or mix with a white powder.
You should try to do a collaboration with an art channel, to see if they can paint something nice with your paint and brushes.
Draw With Jazza!
I was getting ready to reply “Draw with Jazza” but I see someone already beat me to it!
I would paint something :D Don't even need to be credited. That looks FUN!
I think we all think of jazza
Rita helped me understand why these old paintings are so valuable. Such techniques and patience is admirable.
10:31 lmao
He had us in the first half, not gonna lie
Lol Scarface-ing it up at HTME headquarters 😆
Hell of a line. Lol
what would you do with so much white powder? that are the happy little accidents we all want
FBI open up
I hope that dirty little joke did not get him demonitized
Makes educational content:
"I'm sure there is some explanation for that, which I don't know"
admitting you don't know is a good sign of a good educator. Without that ethics, some would just bullshit on the spot or push it to their students as 'homework'. Some of friends who are teaching in universities are nutjobs like that.
As the old saying goes, "true wisdom is knowing what you don't know." Could be either Socrates or Confucius, or both (each has been accredited with the saying). I dunno. But I also know that I don't know.
I was.hoping he would tell me!!
The beer episode and this one are high level content, pretty good!
I feel like you're making a conscious effort to be cleaner as you work. I appreciate that.
Pours out the white powder straightens it into a line. Whatcha doing Andy
Yes I did catch the white powder line. :D
Force of habit
Paused the video to find this comment. Always gotta cut the white.
@@rasmis I didn't see that
That ! explains the painting ... lol
I think that painting you made should be in a museum somewhere. Maybe even have Andy make a yearly event called "HTME Museum", and have people pay to watch the things you made. You could have a few details about how each item was made and what it is, as well as a youtube link and a QR code for the youtube link for the episode (or episodes) it was made and used in.
I just saw your last video yesterday night and I was curious and since you make these videos and that take longer to make I was waiting for the second part and I was excited to Im happy that you uploaded this so quickly!
Watching the expert review was my favorite part. Thank you for the video. Very well done.
Lol i love Bob Ross paint-alongs, especially when non-artists try. It's often actually turns out really good - i actually really like your painting! This is actually one of my favorites of your videos. I really like art, and i loved the input from the art curators, and i love that your painting actually came out really good, and seeing the paint made from scratch was so cool! Ty!
Non-artsy people following along with him and trying their best while having fun painting is exactly what Bob Ross would love i think.
The Mona Lisa was painted on wood. This is for my 9 year old son who loves your channel. Now i do too! Thank you for all you do! You are awesome.
I would really appreciate a quick follow up video dedicated to the copper paint that did not hold up. Maybe it just didn't get enough oil? Would watch you troubleshoot that and any other problems into better quality. Thanks. Good job on this paint series guys!
Either didn't get enough oil, wasn't ground finely enough, or there was a chemical reaction that continued to happen before it finally stabilized into a more final state.
Yes, they said it might be because of the particle size. Pretty interesting stuff there.
@@El_Chompo I'm tempted to think perhaps an impurity in the distillation causing a reaction, perhaps? I don't know much about chemistry, but judging by the fact it was the same chemical composition as the 'real thing', or intended to be, but ended up a different color, I'd hedge my bets on some kind of contamination causing an impurity that threw off the color due to a reaction. Quite possibly, that could've led to the graininess as well, if it caused some crystallization of some sort over time.
Hey! I am a Minnesota native who is currently living in Philadelphia, I graduated from a school out here with a BFA in Painting, and Bob was a teacher of mine! I very much enjoy your channel and have been watching it since it started, it was refreshing and surprising to see you guys cover a field I specialize in, thank you!

*Andys mom randomly shows up*
mom: "So what you doing Andy?"
Andy: "I am making white paint"
mom: with cocaine?

This is one of your best episodes. It was %100 on brand. With %100 great results. Good job.
Did he purposely lay the suspicious “white powder “ in a line like was going to snort
Out of all the stuff you've made on this channel, the finished painting really made me smile. I would for sure hang that on my wall if I'd mined all the pigments and extracted the oil before painting it myself
The medium Leonardo Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa on was wood.
Love this channel!
That was my first guess, but I don't know. Good luck!
You put so much effort into your videos! I hope more people can support you and your channel. You deserve more views!
I like pretty much all your videos, but this was particularly good. Keep up the amazing content!
Honestly thought the painting was phenomenal like I was really impressed! Another awesome video Andy!! Cool to see all the chemistry being refined and at least slightly less frustrating for you!
The Mona Lisa is painted directly onto a piece of wood! Specifically, Poplar from the Lombardi region of Italy.
I think you did a great job!
Usually it takes a lot of people working separately to produce theses items!
You should be proud of yourself!
7:24 their actually hinting at a future episode where they make crystal meth from scratch.
The Mona Lisa was painted on a Poplar wood panel. Great video! I had been thinking about trying to make oil paint, and now I know how to start!
* pushes pause on life * A new HTME video!!
Loved the PBS fundraiser reference you tossed in at the end there. Very nice touch.
You should auction the painting you made. That was a pretty good one.
We need an estimate of how much it costed him to make that painting XD
You should auction the painting and proceeds go to the show!
This art series makes me so happy!
You sir have achieved chemical enlightenment, Grant Thompson would would be proud. 👍⚗️
Forget Da Vinci and Curie, I want Grant to be proud.
My daughters and I love watching you make things. We thought this video was a great success, and they "oohed and awwed " at your painting! They would love chemistry experiments. The Mona Lisa was painted on poplar wood.
Positively suprised how nice of a painting
Utilizing the experts at the end of the video adds a nice closure that may be lacking in other project videos. Please do that again.:) Awesome job team!
Actually this painting is quite good for a first try with oil. And the hair definetly gave a nice touch. :)
Mona Lisa's story is so interesting! It was actually painted on a poplar wood panel. The painting has never been insured because it is concidered priceless.
The Mona Lisa was painted on a Poplar Wood Panel between 1503 and 1514.
The more you know...

TH-cam is at it's strongest when you're learning wonderful things on it. Wonderful video.
Leonardo Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa on wood from the populus/poplar tree
thanks high school art class
Wows!! Seeing how much you've improved in chemistry is amazing!!! I remember all those attempts and I'm sure seeing the large yield now is rewarding ☺
The Joy of Painting with Andy George.
Incredible work on crafting the paints, the painting came out well too! You've got a great channel here
He ways not lying when he said, "I'm going to channel my inner Bob Ross.".
Holy... everything is so good in this Video, and your painting looks absolutly great!
R.I.P. Grant Thompson...
why
Yann cedric Totsingan
He was the original king of random and he worked with Andy for the glass thing
All things considered that really wasn't bad, man! You got the reflections in the water and some of the Bob Ross techniques down which really make it better. Some of the paints like the copper green as well as the brushes themselves may not be as refined as you would want, but it was very clear where you were going with the painting. Really enjoyed this video.
You didnt have any liquid clear coating on the canvas, otherwise your painting would have been exactly like a Ross, otherwise great job!
he forgot the liquid hhhwite
Actually a solid painting, your skills are pretty good ! Thank you for putting all that time and effort into making those paints, interesting and educational ! Also the Mona Lisa was painted on wood !
"if you aren't having fun then why are you doing it?"
Your painting turned out really great! I really like the way the mountains look and the way you made the waterline with the reflection of the trees looked wonderful. I would be proud to hang that up on a wall if I were you.
Can you try to make a small house from scratch?
No lie, check out MySelfReliance. He built a cabin from scratch using hand tools
A geodesic dome home / shed would be really cool.
@@gokucrazy22 Check out Primitive Technology. All he started out with was a pair of shorts.
He won't even speak until he has developed everything else that was created in the stone age, the bronze age and the iron age.
that painting legit looks like an autumn landscape, i think andy did a good job
Woah minecraft is so popular they made lapis lazuli in real life!
Or, crazy theory, lapis lazuli is something which existed in real life first (like dirt and trees and cows did) and then was added to Minecraft?

I can't count all the times our field trips were to the MIA. Great concept for this video. It's got a bit of everything. Science, humor, comraderie.
The Mona Lisa was painted on wood (poplar panel).
I love this video! I'm going to show it to my Mom, who is learning painting.
Leonardo da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa in oil on a panel of poplar wood.
Jesus I've never been this early!
Leonardo Davinci painted the Mona Lisa on a wood panel which is very interesting. BTW I love these videos they are so cool to see how difficult it is to make these things from scratch! Please make more!
Why did he cut the white pigment into a fat line before he added oil to it? This is a family channel for God's sake!
To make a train
That is a great painting! Something I always have to remind myself is that as the artist you've spent hours (Sometimes even days) focused on the art, you're tired of it and imperfections stand out but to a fresh eye it may be the most wonderful thing there is!
Also I'm super tempted to use this to make my own paint! I vastly prefer making my materials to buying them!
No lead white?
With your linseed/flax you could have woven your own canvas as well.
Lead is toxic dude. Why do you think so many painters in history died so early? it was obviously because of lead intoxication.
Btw where are you from?
@@abyssstrider2547 I only mean to be pure to the process.

Though just to let you know most people prefer the flag that was used from 1992-1995

The painting is actually quite beautiful! I love it!
First
Wow! You made an amazing abstract landscape. It's really good.
chemistry art history and bob ross all in one video?? amazing
Honestly not the worst YT video I've seen all day and compared to your other videos I'd say it was pretty good!
But at least the yellow came out good!
That thumbnail is gold. God bless your heart.
That turned out really well. Nice landscape.
I like that your getting better at this stuff. More entertaining.
Bob Ross would be proud. Honestly, it's better than most of the stuff in the museum last video.
Those paints were really cool. I loved the painting, it actually looked really nice!
The painting was not bad! Impressed by the whole video!!!
One of your coolest episodes yet!
The Mona Lisa was painted on a poplar wood panel with oil paints😄 Your videos always tech me something new and they are also very entertaining keep it up!
I think that the painting was superbbbb . Well done man
I wouldn't mind watching him paint with his own paints honestly. That segment was pretty awesome.
Mona lisa was painted on wood. love your video and the painting!! the painting is much better than anything i could’ve done.
Great job on your painting! I believe the Mona Lisa was painted on poplar! (Wood)
You did really great with that painting. Amazing video, as always.
The mona lisa was painted on a poplar wood pannel with oil paints, i think this is because poplar is common in the area and provided a fairly light/even surface to paint on. Enjoyed the video 😊👍
I applaud you for all your hardwork good sir
That's a pretty cool painting!!
Wow I’m impressed! I really think the painting (which you deemed unsuccessful) is an absolute masterpiece! I would habe colored it to the edges though. Well done!!
That looks really good. Dang! Like, your painting look really great!
