  • Creating and controlling fire from scratch was no easy feat! Check out all the tactics we tried and failed with, ultimately landing on a method that allowed me to create a large enough fire to cook my "catch". Enjoy!

      Fun stuff... I learned how to start a fire when i was 13-14 because i was bored... Easyest way is the bow and stick and you can find the materials very fast and almost everywhere. The not having a knife part is a bit shit, but it is still quite doable.

    • @gso619
      @gso619 4 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      I think they're just trying not to rip him off. And the funny thing is that he only used a bow thingie in the video where he showed how to make it and then just went back to using a stick and his hands, because he found it easier. I think his comment was something alone the lines of "It takes longer to learn how to do it right, but once you do it's faster and easier than the bow."

    With your spindle you want one end to be almost sharp and the other end to be slightly rounded off. The part of the spindle that touches your fire board should be the slightly rounded blunt end. The pointed end should touch your socket (the piece in your hand). The reason for this is because you want more friction in between the fire board and spindle then you do between the spindle and socket. This will cause more heat to generate in between the spindle and fire board. You can also use a bit of animal fat in the socket so there is less friction between the spindle and socket. The object of the game is to create as much friction on the fire board and as little friction as possible on the socket.

    Advice for your bow drill fire starter: your spindle and cap block should be made of hard wood and the friction plate should be soft wood. You should also lubricate the top of the spindle and the socket of your cap block with some grease. You can use the creations of oil on either side of your nose for this lubricant by rubbing the top of the spindle to pick up these creations. The string can also be strengthened by braiding lengths to thicken it. The wax does strengthen the string, but can also add to it binding on the spindle. I’ve easily made fire this way and learned from a fellow who was an expert in desert survival.

      @@straight-up-shots it snapped a lot because the stick was too smooth so all the friction focused on the string burning it through. The addition of wax to the string made it grip instead of rub, when i learned to do this if the string started slipping i would stop use my knife edge to rough up the sides of the spindle and start again, her top socket was her biggest downfall though as it needed to be heavier with a better fitted cup her fireboard was pretty damn good and her apindle was ideal, i think they xould have chosen softer woods and acomplished it faster as well.

    I love watching people do this their first time because I remember very clearly when I had to do it at a survival course and we all looked like idiots at first but now it's super easy (as long as we have the right materials for a bow drill otherwise we were taught other methods) but when you have a good teacher and the right materials the bow drill actually only takes about 5-10 minutes which still makes it one of the worst methods next to the friction method. In my opinion the flint and tinder method, the chemical method (when possible) the battery method, and the improvised solar method are best.

    • @corwinweber693
      @corwinweber693 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've always heard that the bow and spindle method was rarely actually used because it's difficult to keep everything lined up and straight and just taking a straight stick and rubbing it between your hands (the way Primitive Technology does) is just a hell of a lot easier, even if it doesn't seem like it would be.....

    you can get phosphorus by boiling piss.
    the story goes that some dude (I don't remember the name) thought that pee was the secret ingredient to making gold because it was the "same color", so he did some different tricks with it but discovered phosphorus instead.
    he made some gold later by doing some shows of this as it was new and had properties people hadn't seen before.

    I can never manage to get the embers to make a flame, any advice?

    • @KainYusanagi
      @KainYusanagi 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Feed it on small bits of really finely shredded flammable material, like birch bark or dried grass or similar, and when you initially get the embers keep it cupped in a nest of flammable material shielded from wind (too much will just blow it out), and keep some slight air (take a mouthful of air and blow slowly and gently; not from your lungs but your mouth, otherwise it's primarily carbon dioxide) moving over it.

      I find char cloth makes an excellent ember holder and will catch and hold the little glowie boy, then you can give it progressively larger pieces of kindling until it takes a flame. Look for fatwood; pieces of rotted out pine heart that has all the sticky flammable sap.
      It just takes practice and patience.
