This is not just about the asian american's voices....this is about asians being brought up and living in the western countries. Having lived in europe for many years but now in the US....I can tell our lives are the same over there. This is a big milestone for all of us
I'm an ethnic Chinese living in a country with a Chinese majority but was raised 'western' as Chinese people here accuse me of being and that tension between Eleanor and Rachel, HOLY CRAP. I had CHILLS every time Eleanor was mean to Rachel for not being 'Chinese enough' because this is MY LIFE EVERYDAY HERE from the 'traditional Chinese' and the people who support them. I have never seen it happen to anyone else because I don't know any other third culture people here who insisted on retaining their own identities and values, and the Chinese people here tell me that I am 'too sensitive' when I complain about it. I was actually told I was not 'Chinese enough and not good enough' for their son. They weren't rich, but this shit exists and I'm happy I wasn't imagining it because clearly someone experienced it enough to direct the two characters as they are.
Interesting comment Priscilla Ting Chen. Sometimes life is not fair. The good side is that this is good background material to be funny and share with others. Would love to see a skit or comedy routine about-a Western Asian person describing his/her life in contrast with traditional family members and friends. I think comedian Margaret Cho and others have made "fun" of their family during routines. See Ken Jeong's early comedy video about his parents and growing up Asian in America... it's very funny and relevant.
It's must mind blowing to me that in 2018 we're still talking about Asian American representation on thing as a new thing. What the fuck is wrong with Hollywood to deny a whole group of American people, the representation that they need to see themselves on screen. Honestly, this is one of the reasons there are so many Asian American youtubers that are super popular, because that's the only place where Asian Americans could see themselves represented.
We should not and do not need White Hollywood's seal of approval. There are plenty of TV and movies made for Asians and by Asians from China, Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, etc etc.I rather see THOSE than us as token diversity hires.
but those are not for american or canadian asians. Asian Americans have their own culture and specific identity, there is nothing wrong with being represented and should be encouraged!
The sad part about this is even in 2018 majority of the American people who are not asians are still ignorant of what being Asian is. Majority of them think Crazy Rich Asians is a chinese movie and all the actors are Chinese even if you are not
All non white races have struggled to be fairly represented in Hollywood. The usual intro is as some type of servant or criminal. Roles of ignorance and mistrust. On the other hand you may get lucky and be sympathy case for Whitey to rescue u.
i’m latino, and this interview made me tear up with pride. this movie is amazing! it’s worth a 2nd and 3rd watch. lookin forward to what this film leads to in the coming years 🤙🏽🙏🏽🙌🏽
We all feel this way. It’s why The Black Panther resonates with African Americans and Africans elsewhere in the diaspora. Now, if we can just get the same inclusion and sharing for Indigenous Americans, Middle Easterners, Central and South Americans...
I'm so proud to be Asian American. Watched #CRA, and it just saddens me that it took 25 yrs. I'm 25 yrs old, and to finally see us on the big screen gives me mixed emotions. Thanks for voicing and making this interview happen. Asian Americans needs to be heard, and this interview does that!
I'm Caucasian but I'm genuinely excited for Ken and Awkwafina and Michelle and the rest of the cast and creators. Hopefully, since this is a studio movie and it cost money, it will pay itself so it gives more people like this a green light.
I hate most rom coms because I feel the writing is lazy. I saw this movie expecting the same lazy writing but instead I ended up loving this movie. To me, it felt deeper than just a love story. There was also multiple cultural minefield that the couple had to navigate and you don't see that in many rom coms these days.
I loved every minute and got weepy watching the movie for both for the plot/characters, but also for a long overdue historic moment in American studio films. Can't wait for the rest of the trilogy!!! And all about the Gos spinoff!!!! POC want to see & support more Asian Representation!!!
This is why i can't respect anyone who doesn't believe Crazy Rich Asians was a milestone for the asian-american community. That in this day and age, asians-americans still have to fight for representation and there are still people who stuanchly believe otherwise. It almost makes me angry at the fact that producers even thought about replacing part of the asian cast with non-asian actors. They completely missed the point of the movie they are trying to make.
A Goh spinoff fo'shoah! "Goh West" "I Say Goh, You Stay Stay (Hawaiian pigeon-lidat)" "Goh Navy (BUDS Experience-first Korean Annapolis Grad)" "Shakespere in Pusan" "Goh-Exican" "Goh Takes Paris"
I'm the whitest white girl that ever white-girled and I was so excited for this movie. One of my childhood best friends was the daughter of Taiwanese immigrants. I'm so happy that Asians have studio support for Asian American stories again.
Come on Hollywood, get you sh*t together, there are so many great Asian actors. And to think that a producer for this movie wanted a white female lead? Just goes to show that we need more Asian representation in Hollywood.
Is the movie any good other than being hilarious and full of Asians? As an Asian American, I don't think I've ever felt this issue if being underrepresented in media (if anything it's more of misrepresentation) other than for the sake of the rest of America actually understanding what Asian American culture is actually like. Is this movie actually relevant to the average Asian in America? I know the cast is super talented, but I don't know how I feel about it if it's just another movie about spunky chick standing up to overbearing/disapproving future in-laws. I mean, Black Panther was great because it put on display all the pain and pride in the black community as a whole.
I'm Asian American and I cringed when the trailor came out, but after all the wonderful things I've heard about the movie and it having an insane 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, I fully plan on seeing it. All critics, whether Asian or White or anything else, say it's a Rom Com done right, even though the story is predictable.
I'm Asian American, went to see it with 10 others, and we all absolutely enjoyed it. I came in not expecting much because the trailer made it seem quite bad, but I thought it was amazing! Definitely worth watching simply as a great movie.
reicirith it's taken a century of Black American films literally to come up with Black Panther. And as long to marry entertainment with political socio-historical commentary. It's also been a history of denying Black folks everyday life and existence in film. Like Issa Rae says, what a privilege to just play a woman living her life on Insecure. I hope you enjoy CRA for the well executed Blockbuster entertainment that it is. I sincerely hope that the evolution of American cinema's Asian Representation moves much faster than It did for us Blacks. 💕🖖🏾
It's the first contemporary English language Hollywood film with an all Asian cast since Joy Luck Club. The key word is contemporary -- taking place in the modern day, showing current struggles that the audience may relate to.
best interview ive ever seen. ken jeong is very emotional all the way. props to the interviewer shes good.
He’s amazing. Love him being real
about this too ❤️
This is not just about the asian american's voices....this is about asians being brought up and living in the western countries. Having lived in europe for many years but now in the US....I can tell our lives are the same over there. This is a big milestone for all of us
Interesting comment. Do you have any preferences of living in Europe or in the US?

Yes! I need a father/daughter movie with him and Awkwafina!!
I wasn't expecting to tear up watching this.
We all feel this way. It’s why The Black Panther resonates with African Americans and Africans elsewhere in the diaspora. Now, if we can just get the same inclusion and sharing for Indigenous Americans, Middle Easterners, Central and South Americans...
Came here to say this. What he's saying resonates with me because I felt that exact way watching Black Panther.
What a fantastic interview. Thank you for letting this conversation flow freely. It’s not canned

Audrie Kim Justin Lin's better luck tommorow.....
trung huynh to watch or that we were being represented? Better luck tomorrow was only in select theaters, and not playing worldwide in all theaters.
Chills listening to him talk about how momentous this all is!
Great interview! Ken is wonderful !
I'm Caucasian but I'm genuinely excited for Ken and Awkwafina and Michelle and the rest of the cast and creators. Hopefully, since this is a studio movie and it cost money, it will pay itself so it gives more people like this a green light.

was! Hate when Hollywood puts in a a non Asian actor in a movie that clearly is supposed to be Asian.....like the movie Aloha and the Decendants.
Nice to see you here, mixflip, albeit a couple years have passed. I enjoy your gear reviews of overlanding campers.

Great to hear about the behind-the-scenes roadblocks. A whole new world...

A Goh spinoff fo'shoah! "Goh West" "I Say Goh, You Stay Stay (Hawaiian pigeon-lidat)" "Goh Navy (BUDS Experience-first Korean Annapolis Grad)" "Shakespere in Pusan" "Goh-Exican" "Goh Takes Paris"

25 years ago? why they keep referring it to Joyluck Club? Memoir of a Geisha also an all asian cast movie....
It Wasn't American made.
really?www.imdb.com/title/tt0397535/companycredits?ref_=tt_dt_co
It's the first contemporary English language Hollywood film with an all Asian cast since Joy Luck Club. The key word is contemporary -- taking place in the modern day, showing current struggles that the audience may relate to.
Can Ken Jeong adopt me? I'm only 28, it's not too late. I'm still a child.
Wth Asian Liberace?
the movie was hilarious!
who was the director that wanted Rachael be white? I will not watch it or some of his future film.
Buddy L it was a producer. Hollywood producers are a dime a dozen and most of them are mediocre at best.
This is about rich Asians, so will poor or middle-class Asians see themselves in this? Not all Asians are rich!
Torontopia Yes they will, the main female lead and her entire family is middle class. That’s the main point of the movie
Oh, ok, I thought it was just about rich Asians
Did you even watch the trailer?? please do a little research before being this ignorant.
KJ kept saying "you know ... You know .... You know", very annoying
