  • Warm, indulgent, vanilla-ed… It’s hard to find the right adjectives to describe the tonka bean, one of the most precious natural ingredients used in luxury perfumery. This intoxicating seed is found in the fruit produced by cumaru, a tropical tree that is native to South America.
Coumarin, the natural extract of the tonka bean, has long been replaced by a synthetic ingredient in the production of most perfumes. But today, there is renewed interest in its cultivation.
In Venezuela, perfumers with a concern for quality and NGOs involved in sustainable development are breathing new life into the traditional gathering of coumarin in forests, with the dual aim of protecting this precious terroir and of generating an equitable income for local populations.

    Thank you Slice !
As children, we used to know where the Tonka bean trees were planted. It was another fruit for us to eat.
Most likely the plant or seed was brought from neighbouring Venezuela to our country.
A few trees can be found planted in the Northern Range on the way to Blanchisuesse and on some cocoa plantations.
The seed was used to enhance the smell and flavour of natural home-made chocolate, used in making a hot milk-enhanced beverage.
Because of the decline of the cocoa industry, quite a lot of persons do not know Tonka beans.
However, in our local weekly market in Marabella, the beans are still sold. Grated, it enhances the taste and flavour of baked products.
The wood is extremely hard, and slices of tree trunks are sold as meat chopping blocks for household or commercial use.

I grew up in Marabella and never knew they sell Tonka Beans there .. Heck, I didn't even know what it looked like until a few days ago when a neighbor in my village brought it for me to taste.. I asked him for some more because I just love the smell.. I had heard about it in a few baking videos I watched

All the natural things you have described at the beginning of this video is what life is all about. 4:43 😂😂😂😂Attack America. I love the way the lady identifies the smells, that is a wonderful gift. It is strange to know that there is a mosquito that contributes to the survival of certain trees. Ouch! That is the amazing aspect of plants, always releasing fresh aromas into the air. 🌴🌿☘

I have a two year old tree growing in the US, zone 10b. There’s also a 6 year old tree in the ground in Homestead, FL that came through me, from VZ. To say I’m obsessed with these trees in an understatement! I hope I can get one to flower here in the US, and that way the people who harvest them can use them for their own benefit and I can enjoy my own. I hear the flowers smell intoxicating, though I’ve never smelled them. I have tasted a ripe fruit, and the first thing I said was that it tasted like a caramel latte! Glad to see someone with an amazing sense of smell agreed with me.

Please, please don't show show and explain everything to this woman; she will definitely come back for all the medicinal trees for research. And before long, the indigenous people will be evacuated to leave the land so that it can be used to harvest medicinal plants.
