- Gabriel is a regular plumber in the Cuban capital. But like many others, he is confronted with the low salaries. To make it through, he has to create his own solutions. It's called, "la lucha", the struggle, the art of daily survival… Along with Omar and Eduardo he goes fishing 2 or 3 times a week off the coast of Havana, when the sea permits, on very rudimentary boats… which give them the nicknames of floating fishermen!

We went fishing whilst on vacation in Cuba. We took a hell of a lot of fishing tackle with us. We met an old Cuban gentleman hand lining on a bridge not far from our hotel. After two weeks we became good friends with him and his buddies and son. When we left we gave him all our rods, reels bags hooks and everything. He could not believe anyone would do this for him and he cried. We went back for the next couple of years fishing and to meet up with him each time. Wonderful humble people we love dearly. Amazing place to fish

As a Cuban and Fisherman I can tell this makes me sad, a lot; HOW IN A ISLAND THERES NO FISH IN THE MARKET? I know how hard is life for fisherman and generally for people in my country….it’s sad to see the human and working potential of Cubans, being clouded by an ideology…..Hurts as a thorn in the heart….I pray for my people to be lighted some day

Yes! In the USA (WASP culture) family pretty much means nothing. Everyone is an individual, on their own. You get kicked out at age 18 and your parents don't want to see you again.

Imagine living in a one beddroom with sibblings husband/wives and nephews and nieces. Plus your eventual family. All this in a run down apartment with no toilet and somewhat electricity. This is how I feel about fishing anywhere.
To be at sea, be it grey and lively, foreshadowing imminent doom or calm and serene-- a wash of its briny nectar perfuming the air-- is a taste of penetrating the firmament and being in the realm of GOD.

As an Australian I've lived my entire life with the concept that the ocean is alive with very big, very bitey nasties. The sight of these men paddling so far away from the shore, legs dangling like bait, filled me with horror. Especially doing it at night. There is certainly nothing equitable about the way the world's wealth is shared when men have to risk their lives this way just to keep their families fed. And even if those waters aren't churning with hungry sharks, there must be numerous other reasons why this practice is extremely dangerous. I take my hat off to them.
I have been doing...fishing,net casting,fish trappings and all types of fishing activities known to me... on truck tube (like these gentlemen ) since 1994 both on rivers and sea...rain or sunny,day and night...ragging floods and calm...(I was involve in a severe road accident in 1993 and is totally paralysed from my waist down!!...what I want to say is that these fishermen are really putting their life in great danger by going fishing on tubes without safety gears and protective apps of any shorts.As you say,their feet should not be dangling in the water while fishing... for many reasons...should wear safety swimming suit,should use proper paddles.,and still there are more things aught to be considered about safety fishing...God bless you and keep you safe gents.

Spent several months in El Salvador 1973 on a beach went diving for Oysters with local boys to sell to visitors from the capitol at beach side cabana. This family took me in learned a important lesson about survival in difficult circumstances. These guys are the " Old Man And The Sea ".
It brings tears to my eyes... I am part Cuban and my dad used to tell me all the stories about fishing, and its amazing watching this video...hopefully one day I will visit cuba..
Love seeing other people way of life , their challenges, and their obstacles and the way they go about facing the challenges of life! I am INSPIRED!!!!

I used to worked with a couple of (now good friends) awesome guys from Cuba years ago doing landscaping. They where "Carboneros" coke/charcoal makers... and their stories where always amazing, from their hardships to their blessings. Btw, these guys could plant a 20ft palmetto palm tree with a couple of steel shovels and ingenous leverage. Medium size tree needs to be cut down? Chopped with the sharpest old cheap machete. I mean, these guys had a solution for everything. We always sat under a tree for lunch, kicked our smelly boots off to relax and talked about fishing and life. It really sheds light on ones life choices when you meet people with such tenacity who grew up with nothing. Its like here in the US, we have it soo good, we create problems for no reason.
Huge respect to these men who chose a life of hard work & honor, rather than going down the wrong path - we are what we choose to become.
Hemingway gave tribute to Cuban fishermen on the "Old man and the Sea". He says: those fishermen are the poorest l ever saw. Their equipment is rudimentary and very simple, but make no mistake they are the elite of their profession in the world.

They can’t afford a fishing license, it will be confiscated by the government in a second and given to a officers relative or sold to smugglers for a quick buck

My dad is a farmer and fisherman from the Philippines now I’m living in the US and always telling my Americans friends how fortunate they are.
I keep secret , that I lost two siblings to malnutrition. Many people just do not understand and survivors quite guilt we/ I carry since child.
I’m Cuban American. I’m truly lucky that my parents fled in the 70’s. This documentary reminds me of that. Thank you

I loved fishing since I was a little kid about 7-8 years from VN and still fished for 50 years. Now, I worked as an engineer for 30 years and still go offshore fishing on a kayak in the gulf of mexico….. and I can relate to what he talked about being disconnected and freedom while fishing in the open water. All I think about was to stay alive, catch the biggest fish, and come back home at the end of the day. Tip my hat for those guys.

I have great respect for how the vietnamese government has supported fishermen and farmers over the years. I've recently heard of a case where VN fishermen were running their fish farms illegally in protected areas to feed their familes, and instead of jailing and punishing them, the government helped the fishermen relocate their industry to a better area for everyone. as a descendant of Newfoundland fishermen, I know what it is like for a government to not care for their fishermen and their fisheries, so it makes me happy to know that there are places like Vietnam in the world.

I lived in VN for a few years and I loved it. I wish we could still live there. Unfortunately, the Chynees have ruined the fishing near VN and many other countries around the world. My favorite thing to do is fish for those huge freshwater prawn. So much fun and taste great too.✌

That being said, this is an awesome documentary of Cuban life! The mannerisms of the people documented here remind me of so many of my Cuban-American relatives. It’s cool to see. Also, they caught some super tasty fish! A lot of those were Snapper fish! 😋
As a Cuban American myself whose parents were born and raised on the island and whose family is still on the island, as a cubana linda who goes to the island once a year, I can say if the US would stop STALKING our island accepting that we have a different system, that we are not giving the US our resources and turning it into PR, maybe we would be okay. Socialism in Europe was created and paid for by America after WWII with a $150 BILLION GRANT The Marshall Plan Google it. America created the social safety net nanny states of Europe for Europeans. Spain, Norway and many other European countries give their people everything, Free school including university subsidized housing heat, free healthcare, they have SOCIALIST ruling parties and Prime Ministers like Pedro Sanchez of Spain right now. Somehow it's not a problem for Europe. Yet when the global South countries want to give their people help it's "evil" and CIA coups are initiated . The double standard is very clear and the reason is clear coming from the NAZI West

We are still blessed coz we manage to use a small boat when fishing offshore. You can see their struggles just to feed their family. My big salute to these men who keep on striving for their loved ones❣️ RESPECT💪

I work hard, make good money and can pretty much buy anything I want from store. I wish i had somebody to come home to like this fellow has. Love how his mom quietly looks after him and he looks after her too. I loved how the kids all gathered and little girl took his lap and snacks. I do have great buddies so I know what he has in his friends. Out all night and still at end of week hang out with friends. I lived first part of my life working like them. And also got chance wo work with beautiful people here in usa. I would never bash my adopted country. Love it or love it I say. No choices on that one.

I was happy stealing chicken from neighbors to feed our family ( only did it once or twice ). As a 10yr old kid. I felt like I brought down a cape buffalo single handed. little sisters smiling and eating all doors closed . I am sure this situation is being repeated 100s times a day in this beautiful world. To this day, I like dropping a wrinkled 10 behind somebody who needs it. and they smile and i can see they feel lucky. yes, God smiles on a lot.
I am impressed of the diligence of these 3 men.Just imagine fishing the whole night .They fish to earned decently for their family.I hope there is a generous soul who will give them a boat of their own so they can do fishing in a place with more fish.

Que buen documental, esto trajo lagrimas a mis ojos, pues despues del Mariel cuando me negaron mi salida por haber estudiado y ser un ingeniero yo vivi asi de la pesca, recuerdo que le vendiamos los peces a unos fotografos que trabajaban en el cabaret Tropicana y para colmo uno de los llamados jefe de sector me queria aplicar la famosa ley de peligrsidad porque no trabajaba para el gobierno comunista, cuando eso no habia ni anzuelos disponibles ni linea de pescar , dificil de conseguir, pero la verdad que el amor a la pesca y a ese mar de Cuba mitigaba un poco el ansia de llegar Estados Unidos y la pasabamos muy bien en ese momento, un recuerdo para mis amigos algunos ya no estan, Mingui, Talla , Gustavo , Barba y Whito y muchos mas, de esto hace mas de 35 años y todavia seguimos exclavizados...cuanto recuerdos!

I am Cuban from Varadero. My dad taught me how to fish from with a hand line since I was a little girl. In the US, I still prefer to fish with a hand line, bare hands. I always end up catching the most and bigger fish. You can feel the fish when they first nibble and therefore can set the hook really quickly.

I totally get these guys. I live in Philly and fish out of NJ. Im a roofer that doesn't make allot of money but I love fishing. I bought a beat up pos 16ft boat for 200. I took construction trash wood and built my boat. I did buy a new engine because I take my little boat sometimes 30 to 35 miles offshore. So I understand these guys struggle through my own

That’s a tough life…….Respect to Gabriel - Omar and Bernardo who like many other men out there have to provide and find enough for their families…..despite the harsh conditions they still manage to put a smile on their faces 💯🔥 nothing but respect……alot of western worlds have it easier even if it is going through covid and lockdowns and mandates…….these people have survived thinking outside the box and using their ingenuity to get by……..amazing resilient people 💯🔥❤️

What a wonderful documentary, I spent some time in Havana, Cubanos are smart, determined, respectful, and mostly friendly I loved Everything about this place except for their struggle with their government, it was nice to hear they can sell their fish for decent pesos better than average monthly earnings, hopefully some day I can return

Seriously one of the greatest documentaries ever produced. “A combination of tradition, pride and hunger”
I would see the men fishing near the town I stayed in. I would also see them return to the village with the catch and sometimes they would push their friers out front to sell some fish and some rice from home. It was always a honor and a privilege to have that meal rather than the traditional pizzas or going to the high end restaurants. I got very sick eating at high end restaurants and NEVER got sick buying “street food” from the locals. It was the best food I ever had on the island.
Respect to the Cuban people. So much love and such rich culture. Can’t wait to return.

Oh how I miss those boring sunday afternoons sitting on the sidewalk with the shade trying to feel the refreshing cold walls of the old houses on my back. Usually those sundays are calm and the breeze is soft on your face, sometimes bringing smells of the abuelas' ancient, delicious cuisine. Oh, how I miss sitting there, sometimes in silence with two or three friends, seeing the old man we've always seen sitting in a corner smoking his "cigarros Popular" from the local store, monotonously moving back and forth in his rocking chair. Hearing the music of my beloved Cuban spanish, filled with treasures in the form of vocabulary from various african languages. The worst thing is that those times will never come back, polititians are mortal as well as tyranny, time made it all change and I might die without ever experiencing those boring sundays again.

Got family living in Matanzas, 2 hour drive from Havana, never saw blue water at El Malecon! Even where they were fishing, gray water with lots of trash floating around. For blue water you need to avoid that spot... xD
This film should make these guys wealthy movie stars! They are lanky and built right for the hard work they do. Nice family time and modest eating at the game table. Should be a movie with them playing themselves, a much longer version, I really didn't want this to end!! Thanks to the drug smugglers, the Coast Guard is lenient for them just making an honest living. Wish them the very best!!!
As a Cuban living in the US, I was blessed thanks to my family, I had better opportunities but I really appreciate the honesty of the documentary
I really like the simplicity of their lives..they are very hard working and appreciate on what they have..they seem to be struggling in life but they are happy...

I read that Cuba sends hundreds and hundreds of Medical Doctors to other countries to work and help the poor populations... while we in the so-called western Democracies, we send out thousands and thousands up on thousands of marines to kill civilians of other poor little countries, just to steal their national resources..

Firstly I never claimed that I was an expert on anything mr. with opinion..
My father visited Cuba over forty two times when Batista the dictator puppet of the US and the american gangsters that had turned the entire island into a whore house, allowing the multinational companies use the proud Cuban people as slaves and stealing their resources and were running it as if it was their property... and it wasn't pretty at all... I can still remember the horror stories I was told and the sad pictures of the cubans I saw..
The people today are poor alright but at least they have their dignity like one can easily see in this video...
..and by the way, there are other countries with similar political ideology as Cuba in this world and they aren't going through the sufferings Cuba is facing... wonder why?

after the Cuban revolution the Cuban leadership chased the dictator and the gangsters out of the country, then they traveled to N.Y. at the UN and offered President Eisenhower to work together to restart the island's economy for the good of the country and the Cuban people, but the Republican party at the time wouldn't have none of that because they owned the whole thing up to a few months before... specifically the President's handlers kept him from excepting the offer! and that's a fact! then Castros turned east to the Soviets for help.. and the rest is history..
My Canadian cousins just came back from traveling to Cuba as Canadians often do.. and they have different opinion the you, about the Cuban people.. yes they don't have much material things, but they are proud citizens and happy people!

I witnessed this one morning in Cojimar (the fishing village that Ernest Hemingway's The Old Man and The sea is based on). Having no idea what I was watching at first, I assumed someone was defecting to Cuba by raft (haha). I also assumed the current was pushing the guy towards the shoreline. As he got closer, I could see that he was sitting on a what looked like a 3X3 sheet of styrofoam. To his left and right were 3" strips of wood with dowels that held his fishing spools. Once he reached the shoreline, the mystery of why he has sitting with his back towards the shoreline was solved; he was using flipper to propel himself while wearing full length blue jeans. I had no idea he could have been out at sea all night until I watched this doc.
Years of sanctions, poverty and still the human spirit stays strong. Their lifestyles are so poor and miserable. Still, I admire these people for the relience. God Bless them.
