- A synchronous motor is a type of AC motor invented by Nikola Tesla. On May 1, 1988 Tesla submitted seven patent applications. In error in the video I state that his patent was granted on May 1, 1988, but it was only submitted on this date. I also show the wrong patent because I did not realize he had submitted more than one patent on this date. The patent I should have shown was patent #381,968. In this video a two-phase synchronous motor is built and demonstrated. The operation is also explained.
Here is an article on Tesla and the invention of the synchronous motor,

I found the part at the end explaining the vector to be very helpful. I have always wondered how electric motors avoid "locking up" or how the direction of spin is controlled. The vector explanation of the two sinusoids helped me understand.
I am glad my explanation was clear and helpful. Thanks for letting me know.
Thanks. This is fascinating, and very well explained. You probably didn't need to show as much about the winding of the coils, but it didn't detract. Thanks again.
I was worried that I was showing too much of the winding. Thanks for the kind comments.
thanks to you, my thought frequency is approaching the standard US home power frequency.
Thanks for such informative explanations.
You are welcome!
great and practical!!! thank you
