As a Black man growing up there were no cable networks. You read about Pete Maravich but you never saw him live. I just returned from coaching European Basketball and was living in North Carolina. I was doing basketball camps and clinics with a former North Carolina State player name Ed. Ed was over 7 feet tall and played on that N.C. State team that won the National Championship. Ed knew Pete Maravich and was asked to come to a basketball clinic and Ed asked me to come along. A couple days before we were heading to meet up with Pete he died. I loved Pete Maravich as a player and a brother in Christ. Life is short just look at Kobe Bryant's death. In heaven God is the owner, Jesus Christ is the coach, Kobe is dunking and Pete is passing! What a site that must be!

When I saw Pete ...he fancy dribbled and Walt Frazier stole the ball and put the Hawks out of the playoffs. Next time I saw him in Atlanta there were only about 200 people at the game. I started yelling "Trade Maravich" and everybody there could hear me. Next morning he was traded.
Pete Maravich’s story is beautiful and miraculous. He will always be one of my personal favorites. There were better players, for sure, but I can probably count on just one hand how many were as great a pure shooter as he was and no one, even today, compares to his style and play making talents. I’ve seen highlights of him in which I watched things that I’ve still never seen anyone else do with the ball. He was amazing.
Pete's style of play, and his ball handling skills are unmatched to this day. I'm also a firm believer that his scoring record is NEVER going to be broken.

Here comes the Pistol! For me, the greatest basketball player ever, and they were a lot of great ones in Kareem, Dr. J, Magic, Bird, and of course MJ. But this guy was just awesome to watch, he could stop on the dime on one of his fast breaks and nail a 40-foot jump shot or throw a no-look pass hitting his teammate in stride. As it is, Maravich's career average was slightly over 44 points per game, so you could theoretically extrapolate that to 13 more points per game with a 3-point line. However, if you followed SEC basketball at that time, and saw the defenses that Pete scored all of his points on, you'd have to take that into consideration

This was a good biographical film, which gave much-needed perspective to Maravich's life and career. As a teenage kid during Pete's time at LSU, I tried to emulate every thing he did, including the droopy socks, etc. I grew up watching him score 40-50 points a game against the likes of Auburn and Ole Miss. From the basketball standpoint, Maravich set scoring records in college that are hard to believe, yet, the fact there was only one black player in the SEC (Perry Wallace of Vanderbilt) during Maravich's career at LSU must be considered. Also, Maravich's LSU teams were mediocre at best, even in a league (at that time) where every team except Kentucky and Tennessee was sub par. I think Oscar Robertson's comment spoke volumes to Maravich's severe liability on defense after Pistol Pete became a pro. Still hard to reconcile Maravich being voted as one of the "50 greatest" players in NBA history in 1996, but after he died in 1988, his legend grew and grew, and the sentiment became even greater than the legend. Maravich does have the distinction of being the last white player to lead the NBA in scoring when he did so back in the 1976-77 season.
What else is new I mean how many great white collage players have been subpar in the pros because of defense? Either not athletic enough, tough enough,or strong enough. In recent times JJ Reddick to Adam Morrison but that's not to say that if a team could make up 4 the liability on that side of the ball that offensively these guys couldn't be serviceable-great at scoring or passing. Doncic is a MUCH better all-around player than Pete, and I am CERTAIN that he is capable of leading his team to an NBA championship! He was an awesome offensive player, however, in the modern NBA, Pete would probably be limited to being a 3-baller when needed, a la Kyle Korver.

Such a great documentary! His life was so unique. Complicated home life. Mom’s suicide. Unbelievable talent. Not the best team player. Records that will never be broken, even now with a 3 point line. His conversion to Christ. Dying so suddenly.
Guerin blaming Pete............for the Hawks loses...........if Pete had had a coach with class who could see what was going on...............the problems would not have been as much,................but Guerin could have cared less.............he was a player/coach who had been with the Hawks for years
Guerin was in a tough spot. The season before Pete, the Hawks won the West and were known for having a one for all mentality on the court. Trouble was, they didn't draw well in Atlanta as a basically all black team. The Pistol comes along, making far more money than any of them, most aren't given raises, yet after what they did in 70, it's Pete that's the reason. And attendance jumped up markedly, but the team morale was shot. Guerin was in a tough spot because he wanted to keep what he had together, but couldn't. Plus he could not be Press, no matter what. Eventually he made that clear to Pete - Guerin wasn't his daddy, was never going to be his daddy. This isn't LSU, it's the NBA and this is the real world. Without Press, the adjustment was going to be tough for Maravich.
The racism surrounding White NBA players is as old, and irrational as when the NBA refused to allow Black players to play. This past NBA season several Black players spoke about Larry Bird claiming he was a second rate BB player who didn’t belong in the HOF And now Maravich gets dissed, yes he shot too much, he didn’t pass the ball for easier shots but to say Bird and Maravich were only given honors because of the color of their skin is BS, ugly racism.

Agree Bird is not top 5 player all time. If you took his best 5 years against others maybe, but you have to look at longevity and championships. He didn't play for too long due to starting late and health issues towards end. And he lost out to Magic and Kareem often and only won 3 championships. I put him right around 10-11. And while Maravich was the greatest college bball player of all time, he didn't do too much in the NBA. 2 first teams and 2 second teams. Borderline hall of famer if you just look at NBA accomplishments but college is factored in to some extent which got him in.

The commentator knew NOTHING about Pete Maravich; he couldn't touch on any aspect of Pete's life without spinning it the way his Producer wanted; Fake News; Fake Commentator. At the end of the vidoe Pete's brother, who knew his brother better than anyone, said it best. Pete lived a great life, who never lost sight of his goals. We should all be so lucky. Pete toke his game to the heights he did, because he was a STUDENT of the GAME; he studied it; thought out EVERY ASPECT to improve his game, and practiced IT until he accomplished it. We should all have that kind of drive and self motivation.

Strange how teachers and coaches will help someone with athletic ability get their grades up, but will let your average person just completely fail in life. The way educators help students with athletic ability is the same way they should help ALL STUDENTS. All students are the future of this country. The only issue I have is that a lot of people don’t respect his game. I’m a terrible lefty who doesn’t have the ambiguity that he had way back when. It wasn’t ever because he was white beyond I grew up in the 90’s and playing in the bay was always another issue. I grew up tall, and ended up 6’3”. I was never as talented as Curry, Bogues, or even Maravich. I just saying that he sadly was pushed to play that game. I think we should all recognize when people aren’t about the beautiful game of basketball. He was one of those that we kind of didn’t deserve. He inspired Larry Bird and Magic for offensive skills development.. If Pete ever had a great post and one great wing player , he would have won multiple NBA Championships. He still was a first team all NBA twice, second team all NBA twice, played in 5 all-star games, and averaged 24 points per game before injuries shortened his career. And the legends he played with and against all lauded him. You can blame his father for his college numbers; Pete just did what he was told.

This was a good biographical film, which gave much-needed perspective to Maravich's life and career. As a teenage kid during Pete's time at LSU, I tried to emulate every thing he did, including the droopy socks, etc. I grew up watching him score 40-50 points a game against the likes of Auburn and Ole Miss. From the basketball standpoint, Maravich set scoring records in college that are hard to believe, yet, the fact there was only one black player in the SEC (Perry Wallace of Vanderbilt) during Maravich's career at LSU must be considered. Also, Maravich's LSU teams were mediocre at best, even in a league (at that time) where every team except Kentucky and Tennessee was sub par. I think Oscar Robertson's comment spoke volumes to Maravich's severe liability on defense after Pistol Pete became a pro. Still hard to reconcile Maravich being voted as one of the "50 greatest" players in NBA history in 1996, but after he died in 1988, his legend grew and grew, and the sentiment became even greater than the legend. Maravich does have the distinction of being the last white player to lead the NBA in scoring when he did so back in the 1976-77 season.
What else is new I mean how many great white collage players have been subpar in the pros because of defense? Either not athletic enough, tough enough,or strong enough. In recent times JJ Reddick to Adam Morrison but that's not to say that if a team could make up 4 the liability on that side of the ball that offensively these guys couldn't be serviceable-great at scoring or passing. Doncic is a MUCH better all-around player than Pete, and I am CERTAIN that he is capable of leading his team to an NBA championship! Again, I LOVED watching Pete, but it must be admitted, he could have NEVER led a team to a championship, or even a division title. He was an awesome offensive player, however, in the modern NBA, Pete would probably be limited to being a 3-baller when needed, a la Kyle Korver.

Anyway, I wish I could have seen Maravich and a lot of the other great showtime players of that time. Maybe some aren’t the most well rounded but purely from an entertainment standpoint there are few that I’ve seen that could match the likes of Pistol or Dr. J or Iceman and the like. Though if I had to choose, obviously people like Curry, Iverson, Ginobili, Carmelo and Kobe come to mind from the past couple decades. But still, few today really have that same level of flair.

Guerin was in a tough spot. The season before Pete, the Hawks won the West and were known for having a one for all mentality on the court. Trouble was, they didn't draw well in Atlanta as a basically all black team. The Pistol comes along, making far more money than any of them, most aren't given raises, yet after what they did in 70, it's Pete that's the reason. And attendance jumped up markedly, but the team morale was shot. Guerin was in a tough spot because he wanted to keep what he had together, but couldn't. Plus he could not be Press, no matter what. Eventually he made that clear to Pete - Guerin wasn't his daddy, was never going to be his daddy. This isn't LSU, it's the NBA and this is the real world. Without Press, the adjustment was going to be tough for Maravich.

He didn't play for too long due to starting late and health issues towards end. And he lost out to Magic and Kareem often and only won 3 championships. I put him right around 10-11. The only issue I have is that a lot of people don’t respect his game. I’m a terrible lefty who doesn’t have the ambiguity that he had way back when. It wasn’t ever because he was white beyond I grew up in the 90’s and playing in the bay was always another issue. I grew up tall, and ended up 6’3”. I was never as talented as Curry, Bogues, or even Maravich. I just saying that he sadly was pushed to play that game. I think we should all recognize when people aren’t about the beautiful game of basketball. He was one of those that we kind of didn’t deserve. There’s plenty of others that may say the same thing, I just hope they were happy or have people around to listen to their stories

He still was a first team all NBA twice, second team all NBA twice, played in 5 all-star games, and averaged 24 points per game before injuries shortened his career. And the legends he played with and against all lauded him. You can blame his father for his college numbers; Pete just did what he was told.
