My dad and I had tickets to a Blazer game back in the 70s and we got there early to watch the workouts. Pete bounced a ball our way and we passed it back to him. He said thanks and came over and talked to us for over 10 minutes about everything except basketball. Just about Portland and life in general. He made us fans for life. Good man!
Wow. He was my boyhood basketball idol. I had never seen the things he was doing with such uncanny accuracy and smooth as silk. He led a very troubled emotional life. He had fame, he had fortune, but he was a tortured soul. He found purpose at the end of his life and that makes me smile.

Now just because some Christians do not do that or find it difficult to take the high road with Love. Pistol Pete was a devout Christian and was a great man. I am glad I will meet him one day.
I was working as a sports writer in Tampa Bay at the time. Maravich ran a summer basketball camp at Clearwater Christian College. I was assigned to go interview him. I ended spending the day with him. We ate lunch together. He was concerned that I got everything I needed. He was a thoughtful and caring soul, and the kids all looked up to him. He died five months later. I had no idea he had the heart defect. So young and so tragic.
Firestone and Bob Ley we're outstanding.....and how correct you are about how bad the network has become..... they're clearly lost sight of sports reporting and moved to the insanity of sports analysis with the sad style of Steven A Smith leading the way. How pathetic this network now shows itself......it's a disgrace......in fact it's more of a Twitter account than a sports network.....it's no longer the game but instead it's the sidelines.

I was blown away by watching the highlights of his 68 point game against the Knicks. I am even more blown away by this interview. He had great poise and class. He came across as very smart yet humble and genuine. I really liked his comments on fathers and role models. His ability to hear negative comments about him and react in a non combative way, says a lot about him.
As a kid playing basketball, my heroes were Pistol Pete and Doctor J because they did stuff that no one else could do, and did it with that certain indescribable style that the great ones seem to have. I saw Pistol Pete make a pass against the Bullets that I’ll never forget - he had just crossed half court with the ball and from the angle of my seat, he was between me and the other players near the basket at the far end of the floor. He ‘s dribbling, then flips the ball to his left hand and rifles a pass thru that crowd of guys to a teammate under the basket for a layup. I don’t know how he even saw that guy! It was just a moment in a game that you would have missed if you didn’t happen to be looking, but I was hooked on hoops for life. Like most other kids then I wore floppy socks with my Chuck Taylors and then my Adidas when I played. :)
Grew up watching Pete and modeled my HS and College game after Pete. HS - 1968 to 1970 (3rd team all state in Wisconsin) college - University of Wisconsin 1971 - 1975.
I played semi-pro sports and did very well. Played for Budweiser. I could have easily went to college for baseball or basketball. I was better at baseball though. I ruined my career in sports in HS not going to school and flunking off the team. It wasn't because I wasn't skilled. I did eventually go to college though, so I wouldn't say they did more than me. And I could have kept playing semi-pro, but I got married and moved away and never played again. @@bigglilwayne7050
Saw the Celtics in Cleveland when Larry was a rookie and Pete was with them. When they had the CAV'S fans on their feet, I knew I was in the presence of something incredible! The passing of the torch.
Man we were lucky to have him for as long as we did. That heart condition that he had it's a Miracle that he didnt pass when he was even younger. Each day we had him was amazing and the day we lost him my favorite ball player there will never ever be another maravich not even his son could've filled his shoes

I read .a book about Pete Maravich. Wish I could have saw him play live. Ironically all those things he did in the 70s and got called a Hot Dog or selfish 10 years later brothers were copying his moves and it was ok . Had he been with a teak that had a strong lockeroom and let Pete Maravich be Pete Maravich. They gave him alot of $ right away so that was an excuse to dislike him. Also he had some tough luck with injuries. As a person he was a great dude. Intelligent, and always open to learning, bettering himself in his life .
Pete looked good in that Jazz uni sporting a mustache and beard. His story sounds like my ex-boss in the 1970s - always searching for answers, house full of books about philosophy & such, and he and his wife were near the end of their marriage, though she prayed for him every moment - then he had a Damascus experience - just like Pete. He ministered for 40 years after that and retired - but retirement didn't sit well with him, so he's often in the mission field, helping establish leaders and seminaries in far off places. God can take a rebel and change him quicker than you can snap your fingers. This was a great interview.

What an awesome description he gives of the spiritual journey in the last minute and a half of their interview. I really wish that would have been the basis for their entire conversation, as I am much more interested in intelligent interviews, rather than superficial ones.

Great interview here. Pete speaks about Larry Bird saying he's not the best shooter while also saying he's the best in the game right now. Watching Bird win all those 3 pt contests combined with his ability to score with either hand as well as the way he always put the ball through the hoop at the end of the game for the win after telling whoever was guarding him exactly where he was going to shoot the shot. If he wasn't the best shooter I'd like to know who was. Now that I think about it this interview was most likely done before Larry really came into his own so Pete could be correct here. Also at 9:45 Pete drives to the basket and fakes a behind the back pass while running full on to the basket. Poetry in motion. He makes the shot and guess who I see playing defense against him. None other than Wilt Chamberlain who without a doubt is the greatest basketball player of all time.
This interview took place before the end of Bird's career, maybe he would have a different opinion today. I also think he was using a bit of hyperbole to make a point, that the brain is the most important organ in a basketball player's body. I just watched the game where Pete scored 68 on the Knicks in 77'. Riley may have observed something , but , on that night in New Orleans the pistol was passing, rebounding and playing excellent defense. Just ask Phil Jackson & Bill Bradley. This dude was playing jazz, on the basketball court, for the Jazz, in the brand new Superdome. He punctuated the equilibrium of the game more than his father could ever have imagined. They wanted to make the game more exciting, they succeeded. Pat Riley benefitted by accepting the new reality that "flow" was inevitable and that trying to stop it with New York style defensive "muggings" was detrimental to the game and part of that "boring" era 10 years earlier that Pete spoke about.

William, I was christian for over 50 years, I done my research, it's all bullshit, it's easy to find the truth, if you are willing.

I just watched the game where Pete scored 68 on the Knicks in 77'. Riley may have observed something , but , on that night in New Orleans the pistol was passing, rebounding and playing excellent defense. Just ask Phil Jackson & Bill Bradley. This dude was playing jazz, on the basketball court, for the Jazz, in the brand new Superdome. He punctuated the equilibrium of the game more than his father could ever have imagined. They wanted to make the game more exciting, they succeeded. Pat Riley benefitted by accepting the new reality that "flow" was inevitable and that trying to stop it with New York style defensive "muggings" was detrimental to the game and part of that "boring" era 10 years earlier that Pete spoke about.

@Alex Carushow The most underrated aspect of Lebrons game is his ball handling. Hes ambidextrous, handles the ball like a point guard, has a full complement of counters and doubles. Please put some respect on how SKILLED Lebron is. Dismissing him as simply an athletic marvel is a disservice to the number of techniques hes acquired over 17 years in the league, now averaging his most assists a game.
The clip at 6:15 showing Celtics #44 is erroneously used in this Maravich doc. That clip is from at least 5 years before Maravich donned Celtic green. Nice that ESPN put Paul Westphal #44 (dishing to Steve Kuberski for the lay in) into the Maravich action clips. Somebody stopped paying attention at ESPN?
