    there's some wonky episodes to be sure (Spokes brain, way to eden, paradise syndrome, children shall lead)
    but plenty of episodes that stand with the best; Enterprise Incident, Spectre of the Gun, Let That be Your Last Battlefield, all Our Yesterdays, tholan web, cloud minders, day of the dove, and elaan... those alone are worth the price of admission and thats just off the top of my head

    I own all three seasons of TOS on DVD and never get tired of any of it. Regardless of the writing quality, per season but, how about all of the women!! I'll never tire of seeing them!

    Thx a lot for all three retrospectives. Loved the dry, sarcastic humor. And, as kid of the 60's who watched the original airings with great enthusiasm, I really enjoyed reliving them through your efforts. P.S. Also a fan of STNG, so, will be watching those, too...

    Third season wasn't that great, but I thought there were a few gems in the mess. I really liked Spectre of the Gun, Day of the Dove and All Our Yesterdays.

      And it got love in How William Shatner Changed The World. It explained how Spocks Brain motivated surgeons to create non-invasive surgery technology. It focused on a guy named Dr John Adler. Spock's Brain is a classic.

      I think its utterly silly but not without entertainment value. The deadpan exchange: McCoy: "Take him with us? Where?" Kirk: "In search of his brain, Doctor." never fails to make me laugh.

    In turnabout intruder Lester, the woman is actually making Captain's logs entries about what she is doing. If anybody reads these logs she would be found out. Why would she bother making these logs? It's mind-boggling

    It's odd that some of the best Star Trek quotes come from one of the goofiest Star Trek episodes: Plato's Stepchildren. Also, I wonder why the execs were so worried that the kiss would anger southern viewers, if the show was on it's way out anyway?
    Great job, btw! 🖖😃

  • @bbbabrock

    There are a few clunkers in here like Turnabout Intruder. But overall there are a lot of good episodes in season three. I don't know why people dis it so much.

    • @CommanderBalok
      @CommanderBalok 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For a show that was often progressive, Turnabout Intruder was fairly regressive. It basically took the position that women who wanted more power and responsibility, like men had, were hateful creatures. Sure, we only got one data point, but when they only offer one data point that's all you can go by. They probably meant viewers to take the message that *some people* who want power and responsibility turn nasty when they can't get it, but that's not the message they sent.

    • @spivackl
      @spivackl 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Turnabout intruder is a perfectly good episode. It just doesn't have a 21st century view of gender equality. Well neither does Shakespeare. If you can't deal with fiction written in a different era with different social norms. You shouldn't be watching star trek TOS...or many other shows.

    • @bbbabrock
      @bbbabrock 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@spivackl And also that episode is maybe the worst in all Trek for having the worst and most Shacting. I found it downright cringey.
      And we had it to blame for ending TOS on a really lame finale line, "If only, if only."

    • @spivackl
      @spivackl 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see you've never seen "and the children shall lead" or "Plato's step children!" In turnabout intruder hes playing someone else inhabiting his body. It's an Interesting story. Not as good as "city on the edge" or even "trouble with tribbles" but an entirely entertaining episode on a par with "thelosian web" or "elan of troyus " (another underappreciated 3rd season episode.

    Excellent season 3 episodes:
    Enterprise incident
    Elaan of troyus
    Turnabout intruder
    Most of the rest are entirely watchable. The only real unwatchable (except for laughs) clunkers are:
    Stocks brain
    Plato's stepchildren
    Savavage curtain
    Lights of zetar
    And that awful one about overpopulation.
    So, you've got almost 20 perfectly good episodes. Not so bad.

    • @penoyer79
      @penoyer79 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Way To Eden and The Children Shall Lead are 100000x worse than any epsiode you listed.
      at least Plato has some heart to it with it's anti bullying message and a fantastic peformance by the actor who played Alexander. and some of the dialogue between Kirk/Lincoln and Surak/Spock is some of the best dialogue of the series.

  • @bruceluber5178

    In Requiem for Methuselah this is really the only episode where Kirk falls hard in love for a female this time. It's actually a fembot that he is fully aware of this which makes no bloody sense. Also, Kirk gets mind melded involuntarily at the end by Spock to wipe out the memory of the girl. It just happens very quickly. Sort of an afterthought right before the end credits. This is completely out of character for Spock. He would never mind meld a person involuntarily let alone his own Captain.

    About the first episode, Spock's Brain: "This is one of the more goofier, B-moviesque episodes of Star Trek". Because the plots of the first two seasons were all high-brow serious drama?
    Even as kids, constantly replaying the weekly broadcasts (in Germany in the early seventies) of `Raumschiff Enterprise´, we knew - in a way - that we were dealing with some pretty fantabulous, far out story lines. Which we nevertheless liked very much, of course. Also liked your retrospective. Thanks.

  • @johnr7279
    @johnr7279 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah, season 3 had the widest variety of shows. Lots of blah-blah episodes, a few that are so bad that you have to just watch them to really believe them, and yet also some true gems that may very well be on your top 10 or top 20 lists. Back in the day, the third-season-is-very-odd is not an unusual dynamic I think. It was the same with Kung Fu in that season 3 is the somewhat whacky one. As someone else pointed out, season 3 would not save Star Trek.

    The mark of Gideon has got a convoluted plot with a simulation of the Enterprise which makes no sense whatsoever. All they had to do was kidnap. Kirk, having that girl run around, enjoying the space and falling in love with Kirk was completely pointless. And where did they get the technology to build the simulation of the Enterprise when all their people are crammed together? Pointlessly the whole simulation of the Enterprise thing was distracting and very pointless

    In The Paradise syndrome, Spock spends days and days and days figuring out the hieroglyphics and he figures out. They're a musical sequence and then when he gets there to try to help all he does is push one button. No musical sequence. No nothing. A big buildup with no payoff. Terrible writing

  • @neilm2794
    @neilm2794 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don’t understand the premise of this video. You reference budget cuts and the absence of Roddenberry, then give a 15-20 second summary of each episode as though you’re mocking the entire season? Spectre of the Gun, Whom Gods Destroy, and The Empath are all top 10 episodes of the entire series run. Also, is it your assertion that Star Trek TNG didn’t also feature several episodes with writing as bad or worse than even the worst of these? That’s the nature of the science fiction genre - some plots work, some don’t
