As a BP resident, I do have to agree that the BPLRT is completely horseshit and I avoid it whenever I can. It's so uncomfortable and doesn't even save that much time as compared to taking the bus. Not sure why it still exists considering the fact that the whole reason it was built was to bypass traffic held up by the KTM train, and the KTM no longer exists so?? I'm still very perplexed by LTA's decision to upgrade the LRT instead of demolishing it

    In defense of the NEL,
~There are train waiting times. For some reason the station you visited (Outram Park) had some system issues on that day
~i gotta agree that it is quite crowded and packed, though its still quite efficient considering the minimal delays it had caused over the 20 years.
~System wise, NEL itself is quite dated and yes there are different chimes (the lower one is recorded earlier in 2003 and the newer ones were updated versions)
~There are tunnel lights for all underground systems, just depends if the operator wants it to be turned on.
~The announcements can get muffled at times, but its more or less improved with the new refurbed C751AR
~The noise control on the NEL, CCL and DTL are fairly more well controlled compared to the kawasaki ones (NSEWL/TEL)
~Acceleration and braking wise, i gotta agree on that.
also SBS>SMRT :D (coming from NEL user)

1:30 I used to *_really_* hate the TEL exit signs, but I now prefer them over the traditional exit signs as the Locality Map and Exit Directory are much more useful since they contain all the exits and nearby landmarks. The only thing is that they should put those on the platform itself as at some stations (e.g., Woodlands), different escalators go to different exits.
    My personal ratings would be:
*Bukit Panjang LRT (1/10)* - Extremely bumpy, acceleration & braking are extremely violent, announcements work half of the time, and noisy from the outside.
*Circle Line (4/10)* - Dark, crowded, noisy, old.
*Downtown Line (5/10)* - Crowded all times of the day, and side to exit at each station thing you mentioned at 4:50
*North East Line (7/10)* - Smooth and comfortable, can get a seat most of the time, and is quite fast. Just nothing interesting about the trains or station design.
*East-West Line - (8/10)* - Classic, fast, and comfortable, but I can never get a seat at most stations.
*Thomson-East Coast Line (8/10)* - New, comfortable, and nice station designs, but a bit slow due to the route it takes. I still rely on NSL for most of my NorthSouth journeys.
*North-South Line (9.5/10)* - OG line and somehow still the best. Although using the same trains as EWL, NSL feels less crowded even when going to/from the CBD during peak hours (and empty trains are a plus). NSL also has better scenery than EWL. -0.5 cause it keeps breaking down

@@jtho8937 Well, old as in the stations and train designs look very old, despite the line being less than 15 years old.
The darkness and dullness of the stations and trains gives the impression that it was designed ages ago, and the crowdedness at the stations also gives off the same impression that they didn't future-proof it when designing the line.
Also at some stations (e.g. one-north) the signs have not been replaced since forever and you can see the yellow stains on them.

EWL at 7 is being too kind, since it’s the worst travelling experience for me with barely-there air conditioning and a stench that can only come from sweaty students and PMEBs. The dot matrix display is underutilized except on NSEWL & DTL, as they don't tell you what lines you can transfer to at interchange stations. Those on TEL are also often blank. They should get to show the name of the next stop instead of having the colour displays above each door to do so, & let the colour displays show the line map all the time, instead of alternating between that & the next stop's name

To be fair to the NSL and EWL, they are both old lines. The train you rode on the EWL is the old first gen Kawasaki C151 train and most of the trains running on the EWL are old while the NSL is using mostly newer ones after SMRT swapped the fleets in 2018 for some reason.
For the TEL, despite the noise, it is a pretty decent line, the doors closing warning is good enough, better than the NEL, so I don't see what's bad about it. The exit signs yeah, can be improved much.

    • @lzh4950
      @lzh4950 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

SMRT probably minimizes the use of older rolling stock on NSL (C751B & older) probably as they're gradually being replaced by R151s, so their route maps haven't been upgraded to be able to include Canberra MRT that was built in 2019

Glad that the algorithm recommended this, especially since I've recently started reading up on the MRT system.
Thanks for this video, I believe the ratings are quite accurate!
I agree with your points, but I want to try and explain some things:
(Assuming that your journey was Springleaf -> Woodlands -> Choa Chu Kang -> Bukit Panjang -> Botanic Gardens -> Buona Vista -> Outram Park -> Punggol LRT)
    1. Yeah, Bukit Panjang LRT is bad. They built the infrastructure in Bukit Panjang first, before the LRT, so the LRT has to avoid all those buildings. While the LRT in Sengkang and Punggol were planned together with the infrastructure, so it's much better there.
    2. There are not one, but two CCL - EWL interchanges, Buona Vista and Paya Lebar, but yeah Buona Vista is way closer to Botanic Gardens.
    3. Why is the EWL so crowded? If you look at our MRT map, should one live in the west, the only line to get out of the west and towards the CBD is really just the EWL. So even tho they use 6 carriage trains for EWL, it's quite crowded.
    4. It makes sense for Outram Park to be crowded too. If you look closely, it is the only EWL - NEL interchange, as well as the only EWL - TEL and only NEL - TEL interchange!
Overall great video, and I hope I helped to answer some of your questions!

For the TEL is mostly curving so it is the noisiest because on the NSL I forgot which part but between somewhere is from Newton to Dhoby Ghaut where it curves. All trains have headlights but circle line is so dim, when I saw the plastic on the headlights it is so dirty and yellow from being old. It also does not do it justice like the TEL AND DTL where they use blue or white LEDs

But I can forgive because it's similar to the Punggol LRT
Also, at 7:28, the train you were talking about (newer train) was a C151B. And the reason it (C151) shakes so much is because it's the FIRST MRT rolling stock that has been around for YEARS and YEARS!

Sengkang LRT I would give 5/10. It's sort of worse than the Punggol LRT, in that it's similar that it doesn't shake as much, but the turning makes it hard to balance. Example, Sengkang to Ranggung. The train turns at such a sharp angle that a lot of times I stumble. The stations themselves very dated also. Yellowing in many parts of the walls, and for some reason the column's rubber parts got a few places missing??

All LRT i'll give 1/10. They are a disaster to begin with, designed for masochists. There are no escalators, only stairs and lifts, and the lifts are hot like sauna all the time. The platforms at BP LRT's stations are split to both sides, with the tracks in the middle, meaning if you climb up the wrong side, you've to go down and climb up the other way. SK and PG ones fixed this problem for most of the stations but Fernvale station is still designed this way for god knows what reason. The stations are not manned so if you encounter any issues with the gantry, you might as well just give up and take the bus instead. And don't' get me started on SK station. SK East and SK West shares the same tracks there, and one can only know which direction it's going by looking at the electronic signage, many people who are not familiar with the place, or old people who can't read English, will often end up taking the wrong train to the wrong direction.

As for the NEL, it does have waiting time. It is just the screen that you are looking at, that means the next train is less than 1 min away from reaching the station. It is weird that you did not realize but every MRT line does not indicate when the waiting time is < 1min. Prob you don't take the MRT line often.

An MRT ride is always disturbing because the announcements are too loud, too frequent & the chimes too long. You won't get a peaceful ride. The worst is the very early morning rides when passengers try unsuccessfully to doze off but can't relax due to the noise.

Honestly , for the ewl , you should have visited the tuas extension , the stations are really nice compared to the other stations . For the nsl , i feel that it is alrd good enough though it could use brickland right now because i live near cck and it is an hassle to always wait for bus only to go for lunch as mrt is much faster compared to bus at times . For the BPLRT , yes the ride can be abit rocky but its VERY reliable compared to waiting for the bus. Other than that , i feel that the TEL cars are way too short considering how many stations this line is for so hopefully it might be extended or something though it is not likely .

The funniest thing about the BPLRT is that one of its stations was built next to a ITE causing extreme congestion before and after school overstaining the small LRTs. The outram park station is also the 2nd last line in the northeast line hence it is extremely crowded not to mention having 3 mrt lines interject into each other, its practically how most people vet onto the northeast line
