- I decided to upgrade the differential in my 2000 Integra Type R. I ended up with a Wavetrac unit that I really love. In this video I show you how to install a limited slip differential into a Honda B series transmission. This can also be used as a general guide for the disassembly of other Honda manual transmissions. The video includes torque specs, the description below has parts and tool links.

He's back 🎉
Hi Eric, so good to see you back! I've recently achieved qualified light vehicle technician status over here in the UK since you've been away, and am currently training on hybrid/EV technology. This is something I did in large part because you inspired me, so thanks for all those videos and looking forward to future ones. :)
That's fantastic! Good luck with your career.
Still have the 98 Honda prelude and 2006 Subaru sti. 70 retired. Looking to buy a new Honda civic type r, but everyone wants way over msrp
@@PeterHernandez-lg2eh You already have a front wheel drive and an awd, why not go with something rear wheel drive? New Z looks nice!
The OG youtuber is back! You were so ahead of everyone, I graduated HS in 2010 and wanted to learn about cars so I started watching you and you helped me so much
Me too Graduated Hs in 2010 great time it was.
TH-cam was 5 years into it's existence.

Idk if it’s in my head but Eric sounds a lot calmer to me, just the cadence of his voice while explaining and working sounds way less stressed than before the hiatus, I hope you feel that way too man🙏
Nice to see you Eric. Hope everything is going well for you. Best wishes to you and the family.
When I manual-swapped my 1998 S70 T5 a few years ago, I installed a Quaiffe limited-slip differential. It made a significant different in the amount of power transferred to the road, especially in wet conditions. I also own a 2007 Acura TL Type S, but it's an automatic; the manual-trans Type S did come with a factory-equipped limited slip differential, but the automatic did not.
I actually just blew up fifth gear in my 1998 CRV (was towing a new toy home, a 2005 Suzuki SV650), so this video helps me a ton. Thanks Eric!
I love my LSD installed on my ae86!
I love mine in my 280zx
In our parts we love limited slip for winter driving (NL, Canada)
Better off getting a subie there. :)
This is a super helpful video. I have decided that paying a transmission shop to swap the diff is a WAY better idea for me
Great to see Eric back. One of the best, most instructive technicians on the Web. Very practical, and thorough, leaves nothing to imagination and guesswork. Super.
Finally He's Back😍
Hopefully we will get more videos from Eric👍👍👍
Thanks for the upload CarGuy... let's me know you are okay. I am eager for you to get settled enough to start churning out the videos more regularly.... maybe not to the volume you had before, but something that allows you to achieve the balance you are looking for. I'll probably never do a differential like this... but it was fun to watch, like most of what you do. Thanks for sharing it with us.
I loved the fact that you kept going on the round-a-bout. They are so much fun!
PLEASE GET A SHOP!!! You have sooooooo much knowledge and experience that helps us not so mechanically not inclined to do the jobs our wives want us to do!!!
Great to see you back on the Tube!😂
First video in awhile and I have firsthand experience with this job 😄
Given how much headache I had when replacing the bearings in my GSR transmission, I kind of wish I spent the money on an LSD. I broke the case and bent the plate of the shift mechanism of the transmission doing what you did, tightening down bolts because the dowel of the shift mechanism doesn't sit perfectly flat on its own so the other end wasn't notching into the case. After that $400 dollar disaster and figuring out I could use a Flathead to press down on the flat plate that the rod sits in to get it to sit straight up, then the case went right down.
The differential bearings were also a trip, one came off with some heat and nothing more than my gloved hand lifting it up, The other I had to cut off because even the bearing puller wasn't moving it past the point where the chisel could get it to.
Also those detent springs can be replaced / upgraded for a firmer shift feel, FYI.
holy cow, Eric..i want to say THANK YOU for all these years for helping us out with tons of info about fixing our cars. i have to say its been a very long min that i have seen one of ur vids and boy u look super different with the facial hair sir. i was watching another video from DailyDrivenExotics for the first time about something and i thought one of the guys from that vid was you driving in their Lambo:).. i thought u made it big time rich and was excited for u. anyways, i want to sincerely tell u thank you for all that knowledge brother. keep up the great work Mr Eric... at this point, i view u like an uncle that everyone go to when needed help with their car.
that funnel idea is genius
Always great to see you teaching people how to get a difficult job done.
You always give valuable tips and methods to help everyone.
Ahh counter clockwise or left handed threads, I've been caught out and feel very silly.
Front loading washing machines often have the evil bolt :-D
great to see you in the comments again. Hope you are doing well.
@@ericthecarguy Thank you Eric.
i caught the covid and it screwed the brain up, but i'm english so no difference ha ha :-D.
Yes taking the micky out of our self keeps us grounded, never be too serious.
Dam don't i talk a lot lol.
Eric, I really miss your channel. I hope the shop hunt is going well. Come back soon!

Nice to hear from you again. Hope all is well .
Thank you Eric
You know we can all see that you really care 😊 I don't notice it from many other video makers
Before I even watch the video... GOOD TO SEE YOU, Sir!
Now... let's watch! 👍
Glad to see videos I do not have the tools to attempt or not, but always enjoy your explanations. Thanks so much for all your work, one of the best mechanics to explain how to do things, with little asides that are important.
hell yea hes back .. nobody i mean NOBODY goes into the care and detail you do thank you hope to see more from you someday
Best trick I've found closing the case is to place the gear set in "4th" gear.
The hardest part of any manual and automatic transmission for the Honda civic is getting to open/closed, it's an nightmare 😫 and hey welcome back
The wavetrac unit was the best thing I ever installed on my b18c swapped eg I use for a daily driver. The traction from an open diff is night and day. If anyone is thinking about doing it, it really isn’t that hard to install if you’ve done swaps or have experience wrenching. Do it!
I agree 100%
I have a P2A5 manual 5 speed I got from an 96 or 97 Accord I found at pull-a-part, actually got most of the parts I needed for a swap. Sourced everything else from around the Internet. I'm getting ready to do a manual swap on my 99 Accord 2.3. I've been thinking about trying to get a LSD for mine, since I've gotta open it up anyway, I wanna make sure everything looks good, gears, synchros, etc.. I'm guessing the actual Lsd is probably not cheap.
@@jtjones4727 no it is not haha. But it will last forever and will make u a happy person when u drive it.
@@jtjones4727 How were you able to find that? Sounds very lucky!
I’ve been watching your videos since I was 10 or 11 years old, I’m now 24
And damn I can say I’m so glad to see you back
Welcome back.
Watched the video as soon as i could. It's been long overdue. 💪🏼💪🏼
I had to shim the differential on my Integra type r to have the correct end float. Also, Honda stated thread lock on the differential ring gear bolts.
Ring gear, I locked it in the vice vertically and torqued the bolts
Your thumbnail title rhymes, which makes me happy :D
Thanks for the video, very informative!
If you don’t have a press , you can use the same exact heat trick that he used on the speedo ring for the bearings. In fact I don’t even have a torch I used a nice heat gun and it slid right on.
Feels like the same video from years back but way better
OSgiken LSD also put power to the wheel thats on the ground when one is in the air.
Very interesting. Watched every second of it. Not pertinent to my '01 Chevy 2500HD, but it doesn't matter.... I still learned from you. As usual thanks for bringing us along!
One thing I always do when re-assembling split case transmissions is to make up 3 or 4 "dowels" by cutting the heads off of some 4" - 6"(whatever length works for you) bolts. Taper the ends on a grinder and the alignment becomes a breeze.
Welcome back! Been watching you for 8-10 years. I actually work in HVAC now as well as I have my MVAC 609 cert.
I had two basically identical vehicles and one had a LSD and one didn't. There was a huge difference in the traction especially in gravel, dirt, rain, etc.
Like many have said, I missed you. This one and a few ETCG1 recently feel just like old times. Welcome back indeed
You look happy and healthy. Good on ya'.
I was so happy to see that you uploaded a video. You sure have taught me a lot over the years! Thanks for everything.
Had to press Like on this right away because I'm just glad you're back. I have a mechanical diff lock (quaife) on my Fiesta ST and I gotta say I didn't regret the choice. 👍👍
Lsd for fwd is a must to help using all the power. You said it perfect Eric. I hate that differentials are tarnished from people just welding them shut especially in rwd applications
Easy drifto
OH ! more details (road test, assembly and tech tips)..👍
Welcome back… you’ve been missed.
I haven't watched your videos in a while and this just popped up and I really want to watch it. Thanks!
Bro thank you for all your videos I really appreciate you I just swap my 04 Honda Accord V6 6sp just watching your videos keep up the good work bro God bless you
Mate; it sure is great to see your face back on the screen, may the quality content proceed.
Glad to see you back man. Been referring lots of new things where to your videos for help cuz it’s easier than explaining lol
Man i really missed you so much, so good to see you.
the second i saw this was a new upload i hopped right on to it thanks for coming back we missed you man.
Sure do miss you bro, brought a smile and joy watching this video Eric
Never used Honda manual transmission oil just Valvoline synthetic oil no problem at all.
Thanks for posting again Eric. It was great seeing you again.
Pro-tip: fill the transmission from the speedo gear opening.
No crazy hose + 90 degree fitting needed.
**Got this tip from a long time Honda tech.
Reusing crush washers can leak. To avoid this, you can take some 200 grit sand paper and sand them lightly until the surface is fresh and smooth. Nice trick for difficult to find replacement crush washers.
I've missed you sir. Hope to see more soon!
You know its funny, just this morning I was wondering about you
Very good detailed LSD install in B-series transmission.
How to stop the ring gear from spinning while torquing the bolts: put a wrench on a nut across the bearing for leverage and blocking counter-rotation.
Excellent video... I don't even own any Hondas, but still good to know stuff.
Hi Eric,
Good to see you posting a video. 🎉
Dammit man. You just solved the reason why my shifter would vibrate in my old Integra. Too bad I sold the car a while ago lol.
Ps I changed the clutch on it with your videos! Cheers.
Good to have you back, Eric.
My brother had an Accord DC5 Type R, only took him two months of not checking the oil for it to shoot a piston from the block!
😕
Good video, nice to see you back.
Damn I missed you Eric! Good to see you back sir! To celebrate your new content, enjoy this digital confection I found for you 🎂
It's been awhile glad to see you back.
The LSD in my 2002 F250 helped me lose traction one icy morning on my way to work and wound up in a ditch in 6' of snow after plowing thru a snowbank. That was the last time i drove it on ice. My 95 town car with four blizzaks and 500# of ballast in the trunk never lets me down.
Tires are key. Glad you're OK.
I'm happy to see a new video from you Eric 😊
Welcome back Eric!
If I tried to install this diff that poor car would never go into gear again…😂 But it was fun watching Eric do it.
That torsen will act like an open diff when one wheel loses all traction. It will bias as much as it can until then but once one is loose, it's one legged.
Great to see you buddy! My head turns to spaghetti with transmissions, esp auto but your vids help tremendously! All the best from sunny Glasgow/Scotland!!😁😁😁
Eric! ❤
I don't have any Honda. I am Subaru guy😂. But I am so psyched for new video ❤❤ !!
The best car guy on TH-cam
You still need to shim the enclosed ball bearings, but they are much easier to shim than the tapered roller bearings. Also your shim and spring washer on the mainshaft are installed backwards. The spring washer goes against the bearing, then the shim goes on top of it. I'm not sure how much, if any difference it actually makes, but that's how it's supposed to go.
I'm local to Eric and can provide insight. I've also came up with a creative way of shimming the mainshaft without using the tool Honda wants you to use. Translab LLC (hey Spiker!) also makes the tool for B's/K's and other bigger shaft Honda trans., but not for the D's.
Easy 18 HP gains yo! Especially when VTEC kicks in.
Great Eric! Nice to get a new video 🎉
Glad to see you back!
Wonderful timing! I just installed a used transmission in my 10th gen Si after a money shift. (105 MPH and caught 2nd... Ended up with a bad final drive whine)
I'm considering a post mortem and maybe repair to the original Si gear box, which looks similar to your Type R transmission. I'm curious to see what got damaged. I suspect something in the LSD on that gear box
Eric is our car hero!
Hey Eric nice to see you bro glad you got your differential upgraded on your 2000 Integra I enjoyed the video
I'm here Eric when you said you were taking a break I told you we would be here when you came back 👍
12:28 i've had success with using a leather wrench on the body of the diff, on several models of diffs where this issue was presented. Just held in the vise loosely, and using the wrench to give me counter. In some cases, depending on how things line up, i can prop the wrench (which is a big one, meant for large 20 cm pipes) against the wall by my bench. One could also use a pipe to hold the wrench in place if something or someone near the vise helps.
Great idea!
Eric came back with a banger...🤾♂️
About damn time! Nice to see ya back on here!
A Detroit locker still puts power to the other wheel if one comes off of the ground. They have used them since they 60s some Muscle cars back then came with them.
A locker is not the same as a limited slip, but I get your point.
Glad to see you.
Great video as usual Eric....That Integra looks great.
I forgot to put the washer under one of the detent bolts once and car only had 1st, 2nd and 5th lol. At least didnt have to take it back apart
Great video Eric, until next time✌.
Senang rasanya bisa melihat anda kembali membuat konten.
Great to see you
Welcome back ole guy
