Is The Chain the best Fleetwood Mac song? If not, what is?

Fleetwood Mac did an interview on VH1, 1995 or so and they mostly confirm the communal nature of the songs creation but with this added caveat. They had all the songs they needed but the producer insisted one song wasnt good enough and they had to replace it. Catch is they didnt have much time.. the studio was booked to some other group the next day or day after, so they really had to get on their bike and come up with something in a hurry.
Everyone in the band had these spare bits to songs but nobody had a fully developed song. They threw in these different contributions eventually came up with the masterpiece that became the Chain. John McVeigh and Buckingham quarreled over the whole album but even Lindsay admitted first time that the baseline was perfect for the bridge section.. which transitions the song from a folk tune to a pumping rock number which really gives the song its cutting edge.
So your narrative about Christine McVeigh having the original basis of the song, which everybody else contributed too and modified sounds right on the money. If Stevie Nicks thinks she had the song complete already, then coke had muddled her memory.

Very well done analysis. I have always loved FM in all its iterations. I consider Peter Greens FM and Rumors FM two distinctive different bands. Both appreciable in their own rights.

And also don't forget the Bob Welch era of FM from the early 70s.

I agree that the concept of the chain representing the band being unbreakable is accurate. Following the personal stories that preceded it, the final track let's the listener know that "we don't agree on a lot of things, but we know the music must go on".....sadly, it really didn't.

I am so tired of hearing Stevie whine about Lindsey. If it weren't for Lindsey, she wouldn't have even become part of the band. Plus both were f-ing around, it sounds like.
This is a classic line from the feminists playbook: when she cheats on him or leaves him its "the heart wants what the heart wants", but when he cheats on her or leaves her, he is a two-timing backstabber, a scumbag. This kind of woke double-standard just LOST, BIG TIME. Just like evolution, you either adapt or you go extinct! But they won't so we will be seeing many Darwin award contenders in the next 4 years. The smart ones will stop using identity politics to divide us into smaller and smaller tribes. The smart ones will talk about helping everyone.
Plus it is pretty well accepted that Rumors would never have been so successful without all the drama. Enough! Go you own way!

@@Scorchy666 I'm not so sure about that. It was the dynamics between Stevie and Lindsey that took Fleetwood Mac to superstardom. And despite all Stevie's b*tching and whining about Lindsey, the moment they're on a stage together something magical happens, something that she alone just can't reprocicate. And I have the distinct feeling that that's what irks her so much: she needs Lindsey to bring out the best in her. I bought her first solo albums and after I'd bought her "Wild Heart" album, I realised that I was done with Stevie. That "special" voice had turned irritatingly nasal to me and her constant singing about Rhiannon, Sarah and witches in general had started to annoy me. Now this is purely personal, but the best numbers from her solo albums in my opinion are the ones she does with Tom Petty, once again underscoring that Stevie is at her best when she's co-operating with someone.

I have my doubts she wrote much of anything musically, and always thought her lyrics were thin and high schoolish.

You obviously haven’t listened to the depth of her songs. And I’ve heard many many of her demos. Demos that she wrote BEFORE given to FM to work on. And many times they are even more magical than the polished versions. Listen to her song, “Beauty and the Beast” . You can actually hear the pain and forlorn in her lyrics and in her voice. And her song “Sara” singing ( partly) about losing a love. And her song “Gypsy “ about her best friend who died of leukemia,,,, that’s anything but high school-ish. And songs like “Illume’” about September 11,,,,and “New Orleans” about Hurricane Katrina. Again hardly high school fodder.

WRONG!!! Stevie’s talent is unmeasurable. For many of their records, it’s Stevie’s songs that became the SMASH hit of the albums. I’m not at all saying that Lindsey and Christine’s talents and contributions are not out of this world, because they are!!! But Stevie is just as talented in her own right. It was all the ingredients put together that made for lightning in a bottle that is Fleetwood Mac!
