I try to optimize my gear around thresholds of performance and utility for the purpose. That being said, it's hard to argue with the general performance and long term value that investing in the root armor provides. I think another stand-out for what it gives you in the long term is troll hide as a set for the point in the game you can begin to acquire the materials.

On very hard mode, bosses will one shot you even with heavy armour, so go with the light options such as the fenris set
