He's just really good at playing a certain character. I'm not saying he isn't great at it. He's fantastic. But that's not what makes an outstanding actor. ^^
If he was a fledling actor, I would explain it that he can't do a genuine smile if he's not happy. But the man is a professional with tons of experience, he is just that good of an actor.
A great villain, that either strikes a great fear and/or tragic yet understandable backstory, really can take a production to the next level. I love how Homelander became an icon that is up there with Darth Vader, Lord Voldemort, and Thanos
Very much agree with the spirit of what you said. Would just point out that the Homelander character is more classically a sociopath rather than a psychopath. The difference being is that sociopaths are said/thought to be molded that way via childhood trauma, abuse, and the like, whereas psychopaths are just born that way (for whatever reason). It seems that Homelander had a pretty messed up, unloving, and un-nurturing childhood, which argues for more of a sociopathic bent than psychopathic. There is a continuing debate about how much ASPD is or isn't hereditary (there are arguments/cases for and against), but if it was hereditary, it would seem that Ryan isn't particularly and naturally ASPD himself, though Homelander is trying his best to mold him into such a pattern (and is starting to have some success over time). P.S. side, interesting fact, in one of Dr. Hare's books, he mentions a case of identical girl twins with a loving, well adjusted family/household. What's interesting is that one girl was clearly quite ASPD and the other girl was clearly quite not ASPD. Considering they literally have identical gene expression, and same family conditions, it argues against both nature and nurture interestingly. (But extra side note, head injuries/traumas are known to sometimes induce a sociopathic personality change, interestingly enough. I suppose it's possible that the ASPD girl had had such a head injury earlier on, but that was not known/documented, and its also possible that she was just somehow born "evil", as if there is something to the concept of a Soul and pre-existence of same).

You see these folks and its like, oh yeah, of course they play this and that character. But the good-whether skilled and/or talented-ones can transform to and/or almost channel like another personality type very different from their own.
i feel like Antony is the new Jack Gleason. His character is played so well he is so easy to hate. Remember King Joffery? Did your eye twitch a little? Yeah, that's called tier 1 acting. Hats off to this man. One of my favorite villians in cinema ever. he's awesome.
Its not just the glasses. What makes him visually stand out from the character is his darker hair, his dark beard AND the colored glasses. In earlier promo tours when he was shaved, had the blonde hair and wore no glasses, you saw him looking exactly like the character
It's almost like he is deliberately trying to distinguish himself from the character a bit. You definitely don't want to get socially type casted as a character like that.
@@thejigochigo5316 Some people say that he is like Homelander in real life, but the only thing I could find was one drunken bar fight and unsubstantiated rumors that he bullied/harassed Dominque McElligot. I don't think a one time drunk bar fight necessarily puts him on par with a sociopath though. People do things drunk that they wouldn't do sober. It's why we have laws of consent around drunkeness etc. He does have an interesting astro chart though, with Venus Rising and his ruling chart ruler in Libra (I actually think it is early Virgo Rising and not late Leo--definitely cusping Leo though). But then Scorpio Sun conjunct Scorpio Uranus square Leo Saturn, and the chart ruler conjunct Pluto. Suggests that he tends to be a mostly sweet, friendly, affable, socially oriented guy (Venusian primarily with also strong Libra), but one with a bit of a dark side and a capacity for or tendency to extremism (the Scorpio, Uranus, and stressed Saturn square combo). Don't think he is anywhere close to ASPD, but he might be a bit NPD.
The way Antony completely transfoms his appearance, voice, & personality to play Homelander… it was perfect, everything down to the last, minuet details 🤏🙂
Antony with a beard and dark hair is HOT!!! OMG he’s so f**king handsome. His natural way of speaking with his Kiwi accent is also adorable, and he’s SOOOO charming and funny. Sigh. 😍🥰😘😛

It’s not that he smiles it’s what he is evoking when he does the Homelander character. He smiles like a person who lost his mind a long time ago.
Especially the scene where he is on the elevator this past episode. He has an utter insane smile of glee and release.
