- A lot of you over on instagram have asked for a video about cockatiels. Sorry it's not the most positive video, but I want to be real and show the truth about owning these little guys. They are so much fun when given the correct care, but that correct care can be hugely difficult to give.

Cockatiels are very friendly and lovable birds. As you said they need interaction please don’t leave them a lot of time in cages. I really enjoyed your video. Our cockatiel died at 7 years of age, we think he accidentally inhaled a millet seed. He died choking in my hand, It was so distressing for us. He was my baby, i handfed him from 3 weeks of age. The house is so quiet without him. RIP Sonic... how much i wished you lived 30yrs or more.
I had one for years but sadly, one day she accidently flew away. the pain was a little too much so I never tried to replace her because I didn't want to experience that again. the Bonding is too Real... 😌
@@naturallaw1733 Happened to my mom's aunt, she loved her little bird. She always let him fly in the house and in summers put the cage outside. 1 day he escaped never to return. She did replace him though. But somehow it was never the same for her. So I concur you can never replace a bird. Simply because you really bond with it. And after many years it is just a part of the family.

I love that you included the “spend actual time with your pets” part. A lot of people think that it’s ok to just remember to walk the dog and throw food in a bowl or just throw food in a bowl for a cat and let them sit and warm your lap when you are cold or just buy a toy and slap it on the side of a birds cage, but remember, pets wait for you all day when you are gone just to be with you. Please remember to REALLY spend time with them.
Why don't people do their research? This cockateil is all by itself, in a cage 24/7. It's in a nursing home. Has sand paper perches, which is a no no. So I read. Fed good. But it needs more.
I was 22 when I bought Balki my boy. He passed in January 2020 at the age of 29. I was 51. He spent more than half my life with me, so it’s true that cockatiels are a big commitment. As much as I’d love another cockatiel, I won’t get one because he’d live until my 80s. Just too old to be taking care of a bird. I miss my Balki everyday but I am blessed that he was with me that long. Thank you for the great video. I wish I knew half of what you showed us in this video when I purchased my boy!

I am sorry for your loss for I had 2 cockatiels who were 23 1/2 and 25 1/2 ys old when they died. Now I have budgies and they are also smart and cute.
I lost my best friend 6/30/22 a cockatiel flew into my backyard 16 years ago 8/13/06 & I've never been so grieved, I cry everyday as soon as I awake
I had a Cockatiel 2 years ago. I got her when I was 10. She died after 15 years because of a tumour. It felt like losing my best friend. The scene at 1:15 reminded me of how she always tried to sneak into the kitchen haha. Cockatiels are great

I'm so so sorry for your loss. I can't even imagine the pain you went through. My Cockatiel is currently 8, turning 9 in January and I worry for her so much.. Cockatiels are amazing, they deserve a longer lifespan :(

I got a cockatiel recently and this is spot on. I’ve had no use for my morning alarm ever since. 😂
Add a lot of the zupreem added vitamins and minerals pellets because it is low in fat to their diet but on top of that add a little bit of cockateil bird seed mix. Also give fresh broccoli, broccolini, kale, cilantro, dill, watermelon red part no seeds, few pieces of carrot alternate these but always have fresh cockateil bird seed food and water out daily. My cockateils love these. If you examine their poop and it looks acidic because they have an upset stomach give a few pieces of fresh watermelon red part without seeds, and later give them a few strands of washed fresh cilantro stem and leaves. It seems to do the trick always. If they seem really bad in terms of breathing with their mouth wide open not through regular breathing, or just not eating at all and crouched near the side of the bottom of the cage take them to the vet. If you see xanthomas on them forming take to the vet for removal

When i got my cocatiel 6 years ago i had no idea how my life was going to change... I didn't knew they life so long and didn't knew how much care, love and attention he will need. I almost never put him in a cage, he sleeps and eat above the cage, he is on my shoulder at least half of the time, (whenever he is not on it, i have a strange feeling on my shoulder, like something is missing). He helped me so much when my mental health was really bad and he makes me so happy... But yes he is like a poop machine, pooping at least every 15-20 minutes, its annoying and not fun but its so worth it.. he is me little baby and i can't wait living so many more years together and to adopt more birds ❤️
If i am working 8 hrs, can i still have cockatiel?
@@zhiuzha1034 Depends. If you can afford it. Get two so they don't end up so bored. But you won't be able to get as personal with them as you could if it was a single bird

I'm happy that I traded my reef aquarium for one of these goofballs. I have mine for 2 months now and its been a lot of fun thus far. He started singing instead of screaming, is finally stepping up to me and seems super happy in his new home. Can't wait until we fully bonded,

@@joanne8790 I had 2 parakeets that had the front wall of the cage removed so they could fly around whenever they wanted. If I ever get more birds I'll do the same thing. You just have to bird-proof your place.

This is so spot on. Even with the mess, vet, chop and endless screaming,... I will always be a parront. And that will never change. Love my fids (feathered kids) to the moon and back and they are going nowhere. Stuck with me for life. 😊
had one, lived 30 years. Glad to see someone got their lifespan correct. He was tame, friendly, fussy, expensive at the vet, he actually got the flu and an amazing veteranarian was able to cure him through a very small IV in his ankle. Be prepared for feathers, seed, and guano. Be prepared to interact with this bird. We rarely caged him until he became older and started to lose his vision and flew into our sliding glass door. We put a bunch of stickers on it. He would wake me up, cuddle on my head, neck, heart wings, occasionally hiss, he loved talking and unharmonious singing. They joy in his haphazard singing was magical. He would do free flight around our 4 bedroom 2 living room house. You need to clean their cages daily, let them out for extended periods of time and interact with them. They are social creatures, and loving creatures. Lots of millet and romain lettuce, clean and fresh water daily, get from a responsible breeder. I am thinking about finding a middle aged cockatiel who needs adopting.
I heard they only live 15-20 years. That's why I was thinking to get a green cheek conure because I want that my bird gets really old.
I still can't decide if I should get a green cheek conure or a cockatiel. But I did not like it that cockatiels only live 15-20 years. So is that wrong? 🙂

Yeah, me too... Im gonna have to become a full time bird dad after seeing this it made me feel so guilty as I didnt even realise they had to eat fresh fruit and veg. Im gonna have to start bringing my A game now

The most wonderful buddy I ever had was a Cockatiel called Joey. He had the sweetest most softest heart. I think he had kind of imprinted on me, just a bit. He was a very snuggly little boy. Yes he could be a noisey little begger at times but he really was my best friend. He passed around 20 years ago sadly and I miss him to this day.

Yep, at dinner time mine gets her own plate with a little bit of everything we’re eating (fresh veggies, etc) and yet she loves stealing off our plate.
I am kind of lucky with mine in that department I guess, I have tried many times to get him to try various fruit and veg over 20+ years, he refuses to touch anything but his seed mix. Luckily his plumage and blood tests always still show him on top of nutritional health.

Millet is his favorite food so he always has fresh sprays hanging from the top of his cage.
He doesn't like sunflower seeds but he thrives on oats n groats and a mix of high quality seeds.

This is by far the best description of what it's like to own a cockatiel. I don't think you left anything out. Ha! I have 3. I've had a few birds throughout my life and always complained about the mess, the cost, the upkeep, the time, etc..... but I wouldn't change a thing. I love the little guys! I have to sneak out of the house to go to work, they want my attention the second I walk in the house, they want to be wherever I am, and they always want everything I am drinking or eating. Plus, they like to use me as a perch. But like I said.... wouldn't have it any other way. 😁

My cockatiel is indeed always screaming for me when I leave the room! But I wouldn't want to miss him for a sec, he's so funny, cute and can sing quite well :)

Yeah, my baby screams when i leave the room even for a second. Its mostly only when i leave him out of his cage and leave the room. If i put him back in he stays more patient when i leave
Mine does the same thing he is stuck to me like glue. He even taught my ten budgies to make the sounds he makes when I leave the room. Now they do it and I said to him Really? Did you teach them that? My bird looks at me like "Yeah I did that" 😂

One thing I've learned with mine is that the mess feels like less if you let them eat at the same table with you, because you're wiping that surface anyways. It also helps you bond when you share food with them. :DDD

I've loved cockatiels since I had my first one, Sunshine. She was my first ever pet! As a little sixth grader, I was giddy to have a little animal of my own. I spent countless hours with her. After months and many many scratches I might add, we formed a bond. She perched on my books as I read, would fly to my arm when I called her name, and absolutely loved her baths! She also loved my dad. This was years ago when we had a landline and he worked out of town. But he often called and left our family messages. Sunshine would instantly recognize his voice on the machine and cry out incessantly! So I really related to that portion of your video haha. I hope to have another cockatiel one day. I loved this video and thank you for all the great points you made here!

I have a 24-year-old Cockatiel. I used to take him outside when I lived in my old town but where I live now, Hawks are everywhere.
I got my first cockatiel last November having had budgies for 30 years. I did years of reasearch but am still amazed at the huge differences between the two! I wasn't prepared to hoover under his cage EVERY SINGLE DAY for a start 🤣 I wouldn't change him for the world though!

I love that you classify your birds in a combination of D&D alignments and easy to understand personalities. You don't need to spend 4 hours per bird, but I think what you are saying is that they need that much time to be out and be themselves. That is true of cockatiels or other birds.

My oldest boy I've had since I was 10, and he just has my heart. I've had several types of bird, but cockatiels are by far my favorite. They're great little boogers!

The problem isn't life span. It's the amount of work and time!!! Thank you for this great video!! I myself shouldn't have ever got a cockatiel. If I'm honest in my heart of hearts, I do feel slight regret. Even though I've had mine for nearly 10 years. I went into a pet store in Seattle years ago. They had a bunch of these young guys. I saw this one bird that was freaking out over me. I mean beyond reason. I came back with my mom and still that bird recognize me. Even with standing back and my mom giving the bird loads of attention the bird wanted me. Even the shopkeep said it! So I like to say the bird picked me. I had some experience with parrots before owning him but I had no idea the amount of time and work it would take. When I first got him he was hand tamed and I was told an hour a day which sounds really easy. For a hand tame bird with clipped Wings. An hour a day doesn't sound like that would be a difficult commitment ever. Still there's so much more to it! Things change flight feathers grow out. An hour a day is also not sufficient or correct information.
I understand your feelings. My mother bought me a cockatiel when I was 10 (!!!) without any research and so it fell to me to eventually grow up and take care of him properly. It's fair to say that buying him was a mistake because we were ignorant, but after many years including a few where I wasn't fit to take care of him, I love him and focus on him more than ever before. He's 22 now. He is cute and cuddly and kissy - but I probably won't get another bird after he's gone. Not for a long time anyway. 😅 Cute internet videos will fill the void well enough!!

Yes, it's always the amount of work and time, BUT depending on the age of the owner, it IS also about the lifespan. As a Leading Edge Boomer, I am going to limit my choice to a budgie (I had several budgies as a kid) even though cockatiels really appeal to me. But getting a juvenile cockatiel who may live up to 30 years means the bird will most likely have to be rehomed, and I am too responsible to do that to a bird. Now if I were to find a well taken care of 15-20 yo cockatiel whose former owners could no longer keep it (allergies, need to move, owner died, etc), I might consider such a 'tiel.
Love how realistic this was but it also shows how much you really care about these birds! I've always wanted cockatiels since I was a young teen, now in my mid 20's I'm veryglad that I was never allowed any. I would've still cared for them to the best of my abilities but it would have limited my life so much (city life, owning a dog etc.). I'd rather enjoy videos of them and leave the actual owning of these birds to people who can afford the effort and money for these beautiful cuties
I am moving out in the next 4 weeks, and i've been looking for cockatiels for the past few months, how to tame, socialize and befriend them. I love birds and this video made the reasons to get one overweigh the reasons to NOT get one. thank you

If I seen this video before getting my Smokey I would have definitely change my mind! You can never ever have your floors clean again for more then few minutes, he poops in places like my chandelier and blinds and forget a peaceful day without noises! When you leave him alone is crazy! On top of all he just let my son cuddle him and touch his head, nobody else! It’s a lot work! So, really think before getting one, because after you get very attached and is too late to let it go! Love and regret together is very complicated with this cutie bird! Not everyone can handle! Thank God my son got a small vacuum so he can clean everyday!!
Very clear clarifications I'm the same situations I have 6 Cockatiel and I'm behind all my work as I'm so much busy with their cleaning and on the other hand I'm so much attached with them that can not give them away....really dont know what to do....

If you’re cleaning-up the dried-up ‘findings’ your best bet is to use a cleaner with enzymes and water-down the product by at least a third. Let the spray product sit for a minute or two and it wipes right up.

The worst part was all the damage done to my wife's and my books. We lost Murphy (A pied male) 3 weeks ago and it was devastating. Even so, I'll be getting another cockatiel eventually. I'm too in love with the breed and can't imagine not having another one someday.

My good friend of 20 yrs. had a pair. He loved them so much and hearing him talk I wanted to get a cockatiel.
After watching this I decided I wasn't dedicated enough and it would not be good for me or the bird.

Thanks for this little common-sense overview! I don't have any indoor birds yet, just ducks and chickens and a steady stream of barn pigeon rehabs, but this convinced me that I am definitely not able to care for them correctly in our current house. I'll revisit when I have a nice big sunroom to use as a plant room and aviary. Cheers!

yess! But don’t leave them for too long they’ll get super lonely and miss u. And at first they might not like other people and only you and you can’t force anything, be super patient and loving

I grew up with a cockatiel and recently my partner started whining about how she wanted a Bird, i had trouble explaining the amount of time you need to spend with em and this vid sums it up perfectly! We need to clean daily thanks to our beloved dog and cat so there is a decent chance i Will be joining the cockatiel club once again 😁

I plan to be a bird breeder someday and im going to start a permit system to make sure people have enough sense to care for their bird and encourage children and first time owners to study their chosen bird species throughly.

Excellent! Big wake-up call for potential parrot owners! We just got a baby but had one years ago so we knew what we were getting into. Lots of people around our house so he has lots of company. And we have kids who love him so they can do the 30 years! 🤣
this video was so so informative! i recently started doing research because i think a cockatiel would be a great pet for my situation, as i have agoraphobia and don’t leave the house so i have ALL the time in the world lol! i have a friend who had cockatiels who was trying to give me advice but, both birds passed away in less than a year in their care and never got out of their cage (which also had no toys).. so i’m just doing my own research and listening to people like yourself who actually care for their pets 🤭

I agree, if you want one for Selfish reasons(or most pets for that matter), it's probably not going to work out for you. you really should only get one for Selfless reasons meaning that you want to help in providing them the Best Life they can have living with Humans. not everyone can dedicate a decent part of their Life to them. 🥰

They poop around 180 times a day

Yes they do poop a lot, but it is easy to pick up. The cockatiel I had, when I was younger, always wanted to be on us. Anyone from the family -- we were all his flock. No matter how long he sat on us, every time he needed to poop he would climb off -- like onto the arm of the chair -- poop, then get right back on us. It's like he did not want to get us dirty. He did that on his own -- not taught. That always amazed us. He could fly and was free to go anywhere in the house; but he wanted to be on us. So clean up was easy. You just made sure to have a small garbage can and a box of kleenex tissue handy. I don't keep birds now; because as the video said, they can live a long time and I am too old. If I got one now, I would be almost 100 when it died, so I would probably die first, then I would be on my death bed worrying about the bird and I could not die in peace.
@@reesaserik3759 if you still want a bird but worry about their lifespan you can try to foster an older cockatiel - lot's of these guys are neglected and it would be a great choice to adopt one from neglectful house and save them , even if they're a bit old
I had one of the worst examples, found him 1998 in my garden. Me and my mom gave him all the love and care we had and this little bastard was hissy and bity as hell. He died 3 years ago on my birthday at the age of 25. Since them i thought tousends of time to go buy me some new ones. As shitty this bird was, he was making it up for with his lovely looks, stealing food from the desk or hiding under beds. Love this birds ❤️ this little feckers

This is an awesome video! I'm glad you called out the bullshit a lot of websites say, like "oh have your cockatiel out for 2 hours a day so he can play with toys!"......yeah that isn't gonna cut it. It needs attention from you and a lot of it. It is also annoying seeing websites talk about their diet of seeds and nothing about fresh fruits or veggies! I feel like these guys and budgies are so underrated!
yeah they enjoy all types of Fruits and Vegetables.
Great video, very informative! Most of this goes for budgies as well - I have four, and the noise, the mess and chewing is constant, haha! Just because a bird is small, it doesn't mean that they're "easy" to care for.
Oh yeah definitely! But I’ve not got a lot of experience with budgies so I didn’t want to talk about them ☺️ many people think small = easy. It’s a shame as they don’t realise what they are getting into 😂

I had one as a kid. it was quiet a nice but dam did it poop all the time, I don't know if there was something wrong with it but every half hour it pooped , most of the time on my shoulder since It stayed with me all the time when I was at home.
Or it pooped all over the furniture .

Well pooping is normal for them smh my parakeet poops every hour or whatever and its normal. Idk if it is for cockatiels tho-
That’s all birds. Budgies poop about every 10 minutes.

When I was in my early teens, my parents were given two cockatiels, we had them for nearly ten years. One of them was so gentle and cuddly while the other was playful and overall loud, he also loved to sing. I was so upset when they died, but they were passed down from family to family, and nobody knew how old the were. Now I own a green cheek conure, he is loud, extremely cuddly and demanding. He is jealous of my xbox controller, when I play xbox, he crawls to my lap asking pets. He's jealous of my cat, he's very jealous of my phone. I can't pick up calls in front of him, he'll cause a tamtrum🤣🤣. The cage door is almost always opened, one day I woke up with him on my pillow looking very serious at me, like, when will you wake up😂. I started to lock the door over night from then on. When I leave the room, like to go to the kitchen or to toilet, he either flies of the cage straight to my shoulder, or wonders around looking for me.
But not everything is sweet. He's too attached to me, my work pathern is flexible, on low season I work less hours and on high season I just live for work. Last year was extreme. I worked 12 to 14 hours a day and my absence caused him a lot of stress. After just 2 weeks he was plucking his belly and wings feather I tried to give him more attention but after a couple months he got quite depressed. This year's high season, my parents looked after him, I would go see him when I could. I am planning to get him a companion, maybe a sun conure or a pineapple head conure, since conures are flock birds, but at the same time I'm scared he won't accept it due to his jealous nature. He spent six years on his own and conures are a long commitment, just like cockatiels, they live up to 30yrs, and 30yrs with them not getting along, it's stressful for the birds, and stressful for me. Also, I don't really know if it will help and make up for my absence, during those times, I don't want to end up with two depressed bird. But if that helps him with his loneliness, I'm game.
You'd have to think how their needs would be taken care of in future like if your parents weren't around to help take care of them anymore. A bonded bird, I don't know how they'd readjust if it had to be rehomed.. which I otherwise don't see a problem with. We humans put babies up for adoption after all. Anyway, not a problem I'm ever likely to have if I rehome one of my budgies. Too aggressive to be tamed imo. But I like to take her out so she also gets exercise. Willing to eat millet while perched on a stick or my finger. But is a grumpy thing. Can't fly great after life since she was young in a cage but improving.
