One inexpensive thing the kits could have included are a few small screw eyes to make a fishing pole.

You beat me to it. I always make sure to add a few to any fishing kits I make. Necessary? No, but they take up no space and weigh virtually nothing.

Easy to add them after the fact though.

Bobber stop allows a bobber to slide freely up and down the line for easier casting and also allow fishing at a specific depth. To use, feed your line through the metal loop and place rearward (bite of your fishing line), hold the bite and slide the bobber stop off the metal loop and onto your loop of line, eventually going past the bite and ending on just the single strand of line. Adjust for depth by sliding the bobber stop up or down your line with the appropriate rigging tied on below the stopper. Handy little things.

A nice kit. I brought mine from another company no longer in business but added a few of my own items, mainly more variety of lures. Most kits fail in the line department, so it is lovely to see two spools in this kit. If you want to build your own, keep an eye on the Walmart fishing area as they often have items selling at over half off on clearance. Don't wait for the off season, our local Walmart's a nice selection of hooks and lures on clearance. Tip: do up your hooks and lines now at home. I was putting 4 of those split tail grub on hooks they came with today and it was so easy to come out the side. In the stress of survival, you don't want to risk fish hooking yourself.

Wow! This was a pleasant surprise. Just seeing the thumbnail I was skeptical but those kits seem to be very high quality. One can debate the utility of fishing in a survival situation but if you're gonna have it the gear might was well be good. The first thing I noticed is that the designer seems to actually know about fishing! I'd like to see a couple more swivel snaps but the addition of a few steel leaders is very smart. And lots of hooks, and a wide variety of them! And it's awesome that the designer understands that you're not gonna do much fishing with ten feet of line; it gets kinked up, abraded and it breaks so kudos for having large spools. I would have to mirror your comments, there's not much to criticize. And the price is pretty nice as well.

If you have done everything else on your shelter, signals, and water needs, then fishing gives you something to do and helps you stay put in one area until found.

Remember, survival, SHTF fishing is not a sport. It;s no longer the fishing that counts, It is the Catching!

    • @pietrayday9915
      @pietrayday9915 ปีที่แล้ว

As a non-fisherman, I would certainly have cut the costs on the hooks - seems to my eye like one could have easily have gotten away with a smaller, targeted variety - so that generous selection is really impressive to me! That generous amount of line is also a very nice touch, and the bait REALLY goes above and beyond what seems to be typical for low-end survival kits.

I'm not a fisherman, but these did look like nice, complete, compact little kits!
Since these seem to be nice, complete kits with everything but a fishing pole, I think the only thing I could think of to add, which would add negligible weight, space, and cost, would be something I saw once in a different survival kit: a half-dozen screw "eyes" and two screw L-hooks, which can be screwed into a length of sturdy branch to make a rudimentary fishing rod (the L-hooks would be placed down near the "handle" of the pole to wrap line around as a "reel".)
For more weight and space, it seems like one of those round "yo-yo" reels would pair up very nicely with one of these kits.
I've also seen pocket "pen-style" collapsible fishing poles: they seem a bit chintzy to me and I'm not sure how well they hold up, but they don't cost much and ought to at least hold up to some light-duty emergency fishing as a stuff-it-in-a-survival-pack-and-forget-about-it partner to these fishing kits (someone ought to do a torture-test of one of these collapsible fishing poles sometime to find out whether they're worth it?)
Well, maybe ONE other thing I'd like to see packaged in these little survival fishing kits more often, as a non-fisherman: I'd LOVE to see cards included with some basic how-to instructions, preferably on unfolded waterproof cards: common knots, when to use certain types of bait, and that sort of thing. It's a little thing, and it wouldn't impress experienced fishermen, but for those of us who haven't been fishing in 30 years and didn't really get detailed instructions as a kid, some tips and instructions in a survival situation would help a LOT!

Pretty good kit. For "ME" I use only braided fishing line in both kits and my regular fishing gear. Mono is just too easy to turn into a rats nest, and you'll spend more time trying to untangle your line, than actually fishing. Another thing for "ME" is a tiny ziplock bag with 10 or 12 Berkley Powerbait Crappie Nibbles. Now I always have REAL bait that works. Lastly, what all kits should have glued to the inside lid, is a small card showing how to tie a proper fishing knot or two. Keep up the great work.

The one thing I notice missing from all these fishing kits is instructions. Not just for what things are but general fishing info. I have a fishing kit in my bug out, but I've only ever gone fishing twice in my life.
Other survival kits put info that you'd probably never use (like solar stills). Or info that is just wrong, like the stick in the ground for accurate direction.
But I've never seen a survival fishing kit with instructions.

One thing that should be stressed is that the fish you catch needs to be fairly large and substantial for it to give you more calories than you spend. Catching a large amount of small fish does very little for you. However, I do consider fishing gear to be very important as it is mentally healing and helps the survivor get off negative emotions.
With that being said, I am no fishing expert, and I have only fished in a few specific environments.
