Here's something I learned the hard way after packing many many bug out bags, "INCH" bags, vehicle (get home) bags, ready camping bags, etc. over the years. Like you I made what I thought would be a terrific selection of gear, medicines and food stuff to go into each kit. The problem is, particularly with the bug out and get home bags, is they end up setting a round for years, and sometimes I look at a bag or move it from one vehicle to another and I wonder "exactly what all is in that bag again" because I simply don't remember anymore. So now I include as the last thing to go into the bag, a complete inventory of what is in the bag, including expiration dates on batteries, meds, and food as well as the size of any additional clothing in there (yup, I might of had a 34" waist when those pants went in, but I likely might not have the same size waist when those pants get put into service). I also try to remember to pack the perishables in a pocket that allows easy access to them to I can replace them without having to tear apart the entire bag. As a side note, the inventory also saves me money: I might see something on TH-cam and think "huh, I should get one of those" but then I check the inventory lists (copies are on my computer since I update the lists when I replace those dang perishables) and see I already have THREE or FOUR of them. That darn memory thing again! Hope that helps.
I really ought to do that with my first aid pack.
One thing I would add to your additions, is a light nylon bag. Survival kits and bugout bags are always so crammed full, that it just isn't possible to use them functionally unless you can offload some contents into another bag.

If you’re worried about what’s in your bag you can always make a list of everything in your bag to help you remember. Just put some paper with everything written down in a pocket somewhere you know to read.

Remove the battery from the flashlight and vacuum pack each battery separately. Batteries in long term storage tend to leak at the most inopportune time, and having them sealed individually prevents contamination of your kit.
had to repllace my D cell maglight because my batteries leaked. this is the in truck on pax seat one used whenever needed.
The obvious problem with vacuum sealing things (especially to fit) is that once you open it, it doesn't repack nearly as well. I like roll top bags instead. That's just me. By far the nicest pre made kit I've ever seen.
Place the edge of the bag tightly between two sticks and use your lighter to melt the edge! Ta da resealed!
@@paulwright7551 We're not talking about a camping trip. You may not have the luxury to daudle about care free. You may need to get the f#&k out of dodge as fast as possible. I wouldn't plan to make my bug out more complicated. But that's just me.
I agree with you to a point. But some of the items can be removed, such as the Leatherman. (Comes with a belt sheath), that makes a little more room in the pack. To be honest, I think the pack they give is a little small.
I'm definitely getting an impression of this sort of thing being an open-it-up-and-survive thing, rather than an open-and-repack-as-needed thing... I think the idea is that once you break into it, you spread out, use it up, and probably won't be worrying too much about bringing it back to your normal life again in is original condition. Which makes a sort of sense, I suppose - a lot of kits are implicitly designed to be disposable - but it IS a $300+ kit full of high-end items we're talking about: it's hard to really think of breaking into such a thing with a disposable mindset and scattering it to the winds as you run through it, it's the sort of thing that I would imagine you'd really WANT to be able to keep packed neatly to reuse again and again.... When your life depends on it, I guess you're not thinking too much about keeping it neatly packed after opening, and $300 to dispose of is worth a lot less of your life - if you need to cram things back into that bag and move, then toss out the stuff you aren't needing, put stuff in your pockets and backpack, or whatever, but I gotta agree: I feel like any proper survival kit should be self-contained and portable after opening....
Another aspect is that in many survival situations, you may be frozen, stressed out, hurt etc. It is one thing to open all this extra, tight, plastic packaging when in a normal state. Another if you have your hands very cold, suffering from burns, broken fingers and any other things not unlikely to have happened in or lead to the survival situation. Packaging of survival kits- as well as sleeping bags - should ideally be designed for taking this into account.
I like how Mors Kochanski wrote about it for pilots and aircraft crews and I think it may a bit similar if having accidents with a snow mobile, car or whatever. You are likely to be hurt and may hurt a hand. If having cold conditions and not being able to keep you hands warm enough, it is the same. You don't want to fiddle with tight extra packaging, maybe having to CUT them open, risking to cut yourself with you numb, hurt or shaking hand.
True enough small items in a small kit may be more likely to be on your person, but the small items may not do the job if in adverse conditions and not being in good health, fit and having specialized training. For adverse conditions and some bad luck you may not be able to handle the small kit and the tiny tools in it.
Try open all that stuff with your weak hand only or after having chilled your hands in icy water for a while.

Whoa! At $300 that kit is actually a screamin' bargain! It's easily the best commercial survival kit I've ever seen, bar none! It's amazing to see a top-of-the-line multi-tool in a kit! And the Petzl lamp is the best survival headlamp that I'm aware of. A 3x5 glass signal mirror is as good as it gets for portable signalling and the 3x5 Fresnel lens is terrific. I've never seen a compass that good in a commercial kit; in fact, even my own homemade PSKs don't have a compass that good!😲 For one time there's virtually nothing I can complain about (well, I will anyway though!😂. The only "flaws" are sins of omission but as you say, there's always something else it would be nice to have but at some point you have to draw the line or you'll need a frame backpack to carry it all.
The sole legitimate things I kind of lacks would be a proper knife and a metal container to boil. A knife is important but in a sense overrated- the blade in the Leatherman is plenty for a survival kit. The one missed opportunity I see is that it could have been packaged into the superb SOLKOA aluminum tin...but then of course you'd have another 6oz and it would cost another $100. No compact kit will have everything you might want in a survival situation but that one covers everything you'd truly NEED! In fact, if I had to take a trip to the Bob Marshall Wilderness or into the Crazies and was limited to just a commercial kit, that's the one I would want.
But, since it's a rule that I must complain about something...😉 I'd have paid money to see you eat that nasty ration bar!☠️ Millenium Bars are, bar none, the worst ration bars I've ever tasted in my life. And they're hard as a rock, borderline unchewable. I once tried to use a tin can of tomatoes as a rolling pin to break one up to eat it more easily and it dented the can!😨 You could take a few oz of sugar cubes along because that's what they are. I really would like to see you test/try them to see if you hate them as much as I do.
I like the additions you made. While the Eldris is a good knife that's one case where I might have actually added a good folder. Repacking it into a small sling bag is a good idea. By adding a few things you made an already-capable kit that much better. There are still more things a person could add (eg heavy space blanket, a real tarp, etc) but at some point you'd need a proper backpack. To be honest when I'm bringing out "the big guns" my serious PSK is packed into a Mystery Ranch Hot Shot fire pack. But the pack costs more than the whole SOLKOA kit! It's not a camping kit per se but you could live out of it for a week pretty easily.

glad you're brought up the thing people always forget: comparing the price of individual components is missing the research, labour, and cost to the company to maintain stock.
Come on man. Research and labor doesn't cost two hundred bucks a bag. It would be a reach to say there is 100 dollars worth of equipment. The Leatherman making up the bulk of that sum. That bag is not worth 300 bucks period.

Wow. I usually would complain about the price(to myself) but that's totally worth it and for the average Joe who isn't into making their own kit this is even more valuable because of how expertly put together it is and the top notch items. I'm thoroughly impressed. Where I really realized it was the med kit. Alot of premade kits go all out here to get their piece count up so they can brag they have over 200 items or something while in reality there is no reason to bring 10 days worth of acetaminophen or anything else in a kit that's only supposed to last half or even over that amount. Chances are you won't need alot but they still had at least something for everything for when you do. I myself have been guilty of bringing the whole medicine cabinet on small trips but this is definitely a case where less is more.

A tip you may not know, when opening a normal bag lock (without a slider) take hold of both sides of the opening and slide in opposite directions along the lock. This will create an opening which you can slide a finger in to! This is preferable to just pulling at 90 degrees to closure which can often result in tearing the bag and therefore making the closure useless for re-use!
Seems like one of the best value and most comprehensive off-the-shelf survival kits i have ever seen, with some high quality components. Also the way you kitbashed that was really impressive, though maybe you could switch back to the Mora companion after you decided to go with the bigger bag, for the extra capability.
The only thing i can think that was 'missing' would be some kind of container to boil water. Maybe something like a 650 ml stainless steel cup attached to one of the exterior D rings on the bag wouldn't affect how 'carryable' it would be too much.

Yeah, I thought about adding a cup, but it's got the foil so that could be used for a makeshift cup if necessary. I may clip on a cup at some point. Thanks!
@@KitbashedSurvival I was thinking the same thing for your coffee, even if it was a cheap heavy duty mini loaf tin that you can fold up. I think I'd also throw in some sort of elastic cord for those sunglasses. Maybe staple the cord right to the sunglasses with the smooth staple side to your head and the crimp side facing out. Even if they stay on your face without a cord, a good wind comes up and they could be gone. Great kit and worth every penny. I'm picking up a couple of these for birthday presents. Keep up the great work.
This kit is PHENOMENAL! The best one you've presented yet. So many surprising and yet potentially critical items - like sun screen. And I really enjoyed your presentation of it - I appreciate your going to the trouble of opening each packet and, later cutting to the items already laid out on the table to save time. It's become a kind of fetish for me, savoring each as it appears. Each item seemed to be one of the very best of its kind - even those fishing lures and flies seemed ready to hook something right now! Wow, vacuum sealing! Awesome video!
Two items I never leave out of a medical kit. a Quikclot bandage, and a CAT tourniquet. Wound wise in the woods the use of axes and knives make leg cuts most likely with hands being the second most likely.
Totally agree, but to properly apply a tourniquet and/or to know when to use a Quikclot bandage takes training. I have both (actually multiple tourniquets) in my kits as well as Quikclot style bandages but I've had quite a bit of training and have the confidence to use either correctly.
I figured sutures too.
My quick clot/tourney is my ifak (instant ,not individual first aid kit) on person

@@KitbashedSurvival I would have also put a good S.O.L. Heavy Duty Emergency Blanket & their Emergency Shelter Kit, I have them both in mine. also, their Bivey is thicker & warmer than the cheap ones out there. whatever they use to make them that reflects a lot more of your body heat like 90-95%. I used them when I broke down driving at night many years ago, and could not get help right away it was 20-25 degrees out and I had only about 1/2 a tank of gas.
Big fan here. I worry that the rubberband holding the shades to the sunscreen is going to react/ degrade over time.
Mirror was an M34 made by SI Howard Glass... the 5"x3" is $25 if buying 100 quantity.

It's useful to see what other people find important in a survival kit andI liked this review because it gave me some new ideas. Over the decades I've found that just building my own kit based on experience as a backpacker works best. I am going to buy the Petzl e+lite to hang on my survival necklace, which is part of my "base layer" for survival.

With as much as you added, why not take 300 and make a video showing everyone what you would make as a survival bag and we could see what type of bag you'd build.
If you added a small folding saw like the Silky Pocket Boy, this kit would be basically complete in a lot of ways. I always think 'stranded on a desert island', you're going to need to cut some small saplings and gather firewood. Many uses for a saw. Also a little more in the signaling department like a few Orion Fire Pit Pro mini flares would be perfect.
I would suggest the much lighter Silky F180 Saw, and a Mora Companion Heavy Duty knife.
Those were the best quality wire saws I have ever seen, but a hand or arm injury renders them useless.
A mess tin would have made all the difference in the world...

The way they organized this kit it's exactly the way I organize my personal kit with the difference that I break my one in even more compartments. I believe it has to have an A+ organization so it won't make a hard situation even harder.
That is a good point. I think the case really needs to open up like a book to hold everything as you dig through it.
One of the most comprehensive kits I have ever seen, with star items being the Leatherman and the signal mirror. The vacuum packing is great, and for $300 it's pretty much on the money.
Mm? Do you know if that signal mirror is plastic or glas? If plastic, it will signal much less distance compared to the glass mirror.
Have you tried to open all that vacuum packaging in adcerse conditions? Even using your weak hand only or after having chilled your hands in icy water for a while?
@@ghanaboyz In the kit, the mirror is glass, yes there is some difference in distance and accuracy if the mirror is plastic. As long as the hole or star feature is in the centre, that you can send a signal 5 to 10 miles on the flat, but more if from a hill or mountain, being up to 50 miles. This distance, is more than enough to contact aircraft up to 58 thousand feet. Good question on the packaging, I prefer to have the items already opened and placed in a box or container of some description. You may find yourself, swapping items out, if you obtain better constructed items to replace in your main kit. I have a number of kits, from key ring EDC's items, to fully formed kits, used in conjunction depending on the activity. By sticking to the basic items and depending on the size of the kit you want, obtaining newer better made items as budget allows, you will be in a much stronger position, if an emergency happens, than Joe Blogs with nothing at all.

I have to say, this is probably the highest quality mass market survival kit I have seen. And, dollar for dollar, a good deal. I use the same leatherman and head lamp and, together, those (when I initially bought them) were probably $100 combined. Normally I dont comment on prepacked survival kits, as I generally assemble them myself-but this is quality gear at a reasonable price.

Considering the stuff it offers and the Leatherman and decent headlamp etc... This is cheap. I Always suggest to people, that they should build their own survival kit in a decent 40 lt Backpack, however, this is the best survival kit I have ever seen!

4/9/21 Bad news: leather man dropped the wholesale deal with everybody, including solkoa. That’s why the pro has been out of stock since January. Good news: When I called the company, Bart, the owner of the company picked up. This man has two Y chromosomes, bleeds red white and blue, and could sell ice to an Eskimo. we spent 25minutes talking about the quality and passion of his product. Keep your eyes peeled on these guys. They have some good stuff.
That sucks, because having a Leatherman in a premade kit make it that much better. Too bad Leatherman dropped the wholesale deals. Still, this means the price of kits will not be inflated by a Leatherman. Chances are, most people who watch these types of videos will already have a Leatherman or something, so they will be able to add their preferred one to their kits. If I were to buy this kit, I'd take out the Sidekick and add a ST300.

WOW ERIC!! Impressive kit and awesome review! Definitely worth the wait! And again, your additions and bag change were spot on. I would have found a way to utilize the original bag the kit came in for foraging or wood collecting, etc. Folded tight, I think it would have fit inside. Also, the Mora Eldris is a decent knife, but with the bag change, maybe the Mora Companion would have fit or better yet, an ESEE IZULA attached on the outside of the bag. As far as the price goes, no problem with me! I was sold the minute you said the company was Veteran owned! As an Air Force Veteran, it’s important to me to support Veteran owned businesses, so I’m purchasing at least two of these kits, with your additions and bag change of course, for my car and truck! Thanks again Eric for the excellent review! Your channel is hands down my favorite and the best one out there! Looking forward to the next review!

My only suggestions would be, id have used the Maxpedition Remora Gearslinger as the bag and thrown in a SilCock key

This is a very nice, well thought out kit. My only gripe would be the bag it comes in. I would take the kit and put into a nicer bag and supplement a few items such as a metal container to cook / boil water in, a fixed blade knife, sportsman's blanket, and some more medical supplies. The packing is fantastic I may have to start vacuum sealing myself some kits. Well done review!

For an off the shelf kit, I am very impressed. Way beyond those wantabe kits at walmart.
That's actually one of the best pre-made kits that I've seen and it actually has pretty the same gear items (not actual products) that I have in several of my kits.
Like on all kit videos, especially pricey ones, I expect that there will be a lot of "That's too expensive" or "I can do it cheaper" comments and yes, you could probably put this together cheaper but to me this is actually a decent price.
The fact you get good quality gear like the Leatherman, signal mirror, Petal e+Lite and a very solid compass along with a solid fishing kit etc. makes this a solid kit at a reasonably decent price.
Only thing really missing is proper shelter. I have a very good sized poncho in a similar kit to this that doesn't add much size or weight.

Kristyanna Virgona - N6KV I’d keep a power bank on myself at all times. For one, keeping a battery bank fully charged degrades the battery. Considering this is a kit that probably wouldn’t be touched for years (hopefully), depending on the battery quantity and quality the amount of charge you’d get if any may defeat the purpose of it. Instead of a power bank, I’d put in a crank radio that has the capability of usb charging. That way, it can sit indefinitely and power can reliably be made. Yes it would cost physical energy, but then another solution would be to periodically discharge and recharge the power bank in the kit, say when you check on it’s integrity
@@13megaprime I keep several I also just got a Bluetti AC200 power station 2200W pure sinewave inverter, I had done their indigogo in July, the unit goes for $1999. but as a backer, I got it for $1399. I was supposed to get it in October but Covid 19 cause delays I got it on Dec 31st. because of the long delays, they sent us an iHeals 19 oz UVC waterbottle as a thank you for understanding about the delays, it has a set of 4 real UVC LEDs (not the blue LEDs in those cheap knockoffs) and a Li-Ion battery built into the cap. you put water put the cap on then turn it on it runs for 3 mins, and it shuts off. you can get about 70-100 uses out of it. I live in Oregon now and we had a blackout one night I was able to power my computer and internet for the whole time which was about 8 hours. it only used about 40% of the battery. the computer was a standard desktop PC.
Unless you get a REALLY good power back, they bleed power when stored.
I wouldn't put an iPhone cord in there. They make ones with multiple tips (like Lever Gear CableKit) for iPhone AND Android, or MicroUSB.
I always carry a 12 volt lead acid car battery. C'mon, everyone who sees this review will say, "Yeah, but it would be better if...". and if all those people had their way ti would be a 12 pound, thousand dollar, kit that no one would buy. How does it compare to *other* kits? It rules.
this is a scarily high quality kit. my only niggle is maybe include a spare set of batteries for the headlamp

SOLKOA produces some good kits. I have one I purchased myself before a deployment, was adequate for my needs and still have it today. They are also into the training world of SERE so their kits seem to have a more SERE based foundation.

Thanks! It was worth waiting for the review. That Petzl e+lite is one of my favorite. It's designed specifically as a compact emergency headlamp. I use the 50 lumen version that takes a CR2032 battery, if I recall correctly. Not terribly bright, but good enough for moving safely around your campsite. With that type of battery, it can be stored in a kit for up to 10 years. I've had too many kits/get home bags where the batteries in the flashlights randomly leaked.

Surely a fair price. It always surprises me how almost nobody adds a trauma kit in their first aid. The celox is a nice touch but not enough.
very cool for what it is and the kits are handy to have would consider buying one to leave in my car just in case for an emergency and i think they are good but im not gonna rush right out and buy one either just a personal preference thing i would buy it if i had more discretionary income.

You can probably get all the items for less, and almost the same quality I'll reckon. I'll confess I'm a neophyte in survival kit matters, but I am impressed. 🙂♥️🙂♥️
Full msrp (i work at a retail store) you can build something decent for about 150 with off the shelf stuff.
Start with off the shelf stuff, then upgrade when you can. Also a lot of people commenting have good advice for things to add to a kit. I would add some kind of clean area to lay out the small stuff. A 4x4 cut of heavy plastic would do to start, that way you have a clean surface

Outstanding!! Now this is the one I would want to have in my set up.. damn fine kit.. Vets, we always know the right stuff... Your paying for experts knowledge on what you need to survive.. and if you have never been in that situation.. You don't really know what you need and what is superfluous! You have this and you keep your wits about you and you will survive..
Best kit reviewed to date: they didn’t “Chinese” critical items like the multi-tool, mirror, will thought out. Amazing how “survival” has become commercialized. For someone wanting an off the shelf go to kit, this is excellent. Knowledge is power. Power is survival. JSOG6

Awesome kit. Possible to make all the plastic in orange in colour. To leave a trail if needed or aid in lost prevention of kit. I know there’s flagging tape. But. The bees wax candle is also a plus not cheap.

This might be the “Best Survival Kit” on the market for the money, but eventually even with the added items and replacement bag that he used? It’s Not up to my standards. Any badly need injured person would die with those bags. There are glaring holes.

I think that a few things I would Add/Change are: 1.) a Contractors Trash bag (the ones added seemed to be just regular trash bags. While there can be uses for them, the Contractor bag is a heavier duty material and can be used for more things IMHO) P.S. Leave the first couple of trash bags in the kit, they can always be useful 2.) At least one bandana (so many uses for one or more these it's hard to even just pick a few) 3.) You've got two or three days worth of prescription pills, you should have the same in coffee and coffee accessories 4.) UST Flash cards (Fire set, Fishing set, First Aid set, and Knot tying set) 5.) When you upgraded to a larger bag, that also means you can upgrade the Mora to a full-size Mora 6.) Add more condiments to your spice kit (spices, honey, Tabasco, etc) 7.) Spare batteries
With the addition of your larger bag, possibly add a small firearm. Maybe a little NAA .22lr/.22WMR revolver? Something else perhaps?
I think that's it for now. I noticed that hardly anyone down below in the comments were adding stuff to the kit. That's a good thing I think. It means the above kit is already well put together.
