- Chaotic scenes continue outside Kabul airport as desperate Afghans and foreign nationals try to flee, and at least 12 people have died at the airport since Sunday.
Among the crowd outside the airport there are many British residents and nationals, as well as Europeans, waiting for their turn inside the gates.
It has taken days for people to get to the gates although many have the right paperwork, and they say the ordeal has been horrendous and dangerous.
While the British soldiers try to deal with large numbers of UK nationals and people clear to go to Britain, they have also taken in hundreds who should be at the American base instead.
Taking them to the right base is a logistical nightmare, as protecting them as well as the base from being overrun is difficult.
People of all ages are gathered outside the gates, and are confused, upset, tired and desperate.
In single file the evacuees heading to America are brought from one camp and directed to another, with whole families attempting to escape the Taliban.

Before leaving Afganistan they could have planned well and stage wise withdrawn with arms , weapons, military equipment etc, it could have done with better logistic way with Arms & equipment registration and accumulate in Army base wise before exist.. They did unexcused mistake which will result USA more bigger then 11sept2001 in near future. Also push backed Afgan in disaster . If you have spent 20 year then you could have spent three to six month more before planned & staggered withdraw it could have result better then now..

I have wondered the same. Is there some form of gun control in Afghanistan? Think I read once an AK47 costs about $150 in Afghanistan. Taliban dragging people from their homes, doesn't make sense.

No gun control there but society is very intervonnected so once your family/tribe/society top hierarchy surrenders, you also usually surrender in the hope of saving your family. Family and tribe are more important than individual.

My friends, I'm sorry to say this, but the sad truth is, the tragedy we are witnessing today in Afghanistan was both predictable and inevitable. I am 60 years old. I have seen countless regimes violently overthrown while their "ally", the United States, after spending decades trying to Americanize their cultures and wasting billions of dollars in national treasure while tens of thousands are killed and maimed on both sides, hikes up its skirts and flees leaving their erstwhile comrades in the lurch. Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Cuba, Lebanon (TWICE!), Libya and practically every country in South and Central America has been left at some point twisting in the wind when its alliance with the US ceased to serve the latter's political or strategic purposes. Of course the US and its allies had to leave Afghanistan at some point; that fact is incontrovertible, inarguable and irrefutable. Furthermore, the US and its European allies had good reason to invade Afghanistan in the early 2000's (being the hot-bed of international jihadi terrorism that it was at the time). However, once the international terrorist threat had been neutralized, the US and its allies should have left. But no, the US insisted on sticking around and "Americanizing" Afghanistan. But what all the 20-something, over-credentialed, pink-haired progressives with their $1000 Prada handbags and their feminism-empowering, LGBTQ/sexual dysphoric agendas didn't understand was that they were entering into a place and culture where the clock of social advancement had stopped permanently somewhere in the 12th century. Afghanistan is a nation in the loosest possible definition of the term, comprised largely of competing, sometimes violently, tribes led by feudal lords and tribal chieftains who make their European counterparts of the same era look like Mother Theresa in comparison. The Afghani tribal chieftains and their followers don't care about hydro-electric dams, multi-lane inter-state freeways, multi-level apartment blocks, big screen TVs or "Internet Equality". They care even less about women in the government and military, infrastructural development plans, new hospitals and trade schools. In short, the self-assured, self-congratulating graduates of Harvard, Georgetown and the London School of Economics amateurishly tried to solve what is essentially a 12th-century problem using decadent 21st-century social values and dubious economic solutions. I actually heard an embryonic economist of the ilk previously described suggest exchanging the Afghan currency for bitcoin. Seriously....cryptocurrency.... in an economy that still uses women and sheep for barter. Had these theoreticians, bureaucrats and academics but visited Afghanistan, even for the briefest of stays, they would have observed that wealth, to the Afghani mindset, is all about land, power, guns and fear. Land IS power, power is maintained with guns and guns are used to instill fear and passivity in the local population. Throwing bags of money at these people or giving them modern mechanical conveniences like big screen TVs, washers and dryers and Mercedes Benz's is not only absolutely pointless but it is an exercise in wastefulness. If the world is to take away anything from this pathetic and entirely foreseeable tragedy it is that no country should ever into an alliance with the US. The latter will desert the former in its direst hour of need and not think twice about its despicable perfidy.

When the Soviet Union left Afghanistan they did so with brass bands playing and speeches to the Afghani crowds.
@Blob B They did. It was an ignominious defeat. However, they negotiated a long drawn out settlement with the Mujaheddin in Geneva. Part of the deal that there would not be any attacks while they withdrew and they left over an extended period (10 months). Not all the rebel groups abided by the agreement and there were problems but nothing like this one. They got all their people out in an organised fashion with flags flying and military bands playing. They intentionally left some equipment behind for the Afghan army but everything they wanted out was taken with them. Compare that to Bidens' debacle.
They need to simply take everyone they can, then send troops into the streets and countryside to get more.
