Make sure you can actually ride on your TT bike, the first TT I did with mine my muscles seized up and I went slower than I was on a road bike. Epo helps too.

Saw Time Trial a few days ago followed by a Q&A David Millar and the films Producer. The movie is excellent! I would say more 'art-house' than documentary in style, but a totally fantastic watch for any cycling fan (or movie maker). David is the best pundit / commentator out there, consistently adding detail to what just happened or is about to happen in a race that other's just don't seem to mention. Yes, he made mistakes, yes he doped, he also served his time and is building the sport. So thank you David and GCN for an excellent video.

I have been waiting for a decent Time Trialling video from GCN for a while. as it is a subject that they seem to have only slightly touched on. This was great. I started taking Time Trialling 'seriously' this year and am looking for all the good advice I can find. This was excellent useful advice. Too many of these comments are about what he did once. Yes that is a shame. He regrets it as well. However, if we only focus on those people who are always perfect, have never made a mistake, (or seem so) and never listen to all the good advice they also have, then there would be no-one to listen to at all. He has applied talent. It is how he thought about things and applied them that we can take away from this. (Including how he now things about what he once did with the drugs). I also like David Millar's insights into the cycling tactics on TV. He seems to be able to articulate the tactical thinking that is going on, very clearly, that others are vague about. Please GCN, do more on Time Trialling techniques of racing (not just the kit). Especially with David M. PS Am looking forward to seeing the film as well. Thanks.

People who had to epo are victims as much as anything. They had to work hard to get to pro level. They had a dedication and love of achievement and obviously talent. They then learn that or isn't enough at the very top. To really compete they have to do what the other guys are doing, to make one more sacrifice. So they do it. It's that or you're probably out.
I never was in that spot so I won't judge.

Well, I'm a David Millar fan, and I enjoyed this. I miss his time in the peloton, and I wish I could hear him and Ned Boulting do commentary on the races. I am not, however, going to take any of his advice, because all I can "visualize" when I contemplate a time trail is deep, lingering pain.

  • @andreasboger8261
    @andreasboger8261 6 ปีที่แล้ว

On Millar‘s pacing technique based on speed: There’s a reason for it to be a good technique. Basically, it’s the nature of air drag. The air drag force increases to the power of two with increasing speed. Other drag forces are not speed depending (approximately). The Energy that you need to overcome the drag forces for a given distance is the the integral of drag force times differential distance, so basically the summ of all the distance peaces times the particular drag force on this part for the whole distance.
If there wouldn’t bee air drag, or if all the drag forces would be speed independent, then the needed energy for a given track would bee the average drag force times the distance. Then one could pace his ride as he wishes without needing more energy for a given average drag force. (Here I‘m considering that energy losses due to braking are always the same. By the way: acceleration drag is energy conservative, therefore, in absence of air drag and elevation gain, a heavy rider with a heavy bike would need the same amount of energy).
Because of the nature of air drag with its squared law velocity dependency, the needed energy for a given distance and a given time (i. e. average speed) is pacing depending and at its minimum for constant speed. So, every time one rides faster than the average speed, he loses energy unnecessarily, just like unnecessary braking. Every time one rides slower than the average speed, he lowers the average speed and therefore makes the faster parts inefficient. For a time trail, pacing is quite strait foreword: 1) Divide the distance by your target time and get the needed average speed. 2) Hold your speed as close as you can to this average speed, and you‘ll need the least amount of energy. If there is any energy left at the end, than lower your target time and try again.
The speed should be considered as relative to air velocity. In fact, for best efficiency time trailists should measure the „air speed“, not the „road speed“. If there is a head wind at one section then one should go slower, if there is a tail wind then one should go faster accordingly, maintaining the same „air speed“. If there is cross wind, then it depends heavily on the particular aerodynamic package of rider plus bike plus wheels, whether one should go faster or slower for best energy efficiency.
What Millar describes as becoming his second nature is the fact that he has found the most energy efficient time-trail pacing intuitively.

I did some tts in st albans in the late 90s 10 milers weekly and i was a climber ,i got my best results by absolutely going for speed records of the descent 90kph.instead of 70 and keep it on the flat..
You have to use the momentum of speed.
A climber mindset will not do well u HAVE to cane the descents for that momentum.
I used to do them on a road bike no tt bars ver very hard work
Honestly do not neglect the high speed sections if yoiu have 70kph carried into a hill you will maintain much better speed up that hill, momentum is everything.
Climbers cannot tt because they try and go 30kph up the climb and catch breath on the down hill.

I did enjoy the video, but I hope that Si only pays a charity to watch the film ( a la his rules with charity shops and former dopers books)

Si, given your oft stated position about buying some former cyclist books, I'm quite surprised to see you doing this interview and telling people to go see his movie. Several times, you commented about "having this conversation 20 years ago". Given his history, it might have been a different conversation and some of his recommendations might not be applicable today. All that said, it was an interesting discussion, I'm just surprised that you agreed to do it.

No interested in the politics. David has released some interesting information, here and in other videos on TH-cam. Take the info and worry less about the doping etc, because they are/were all on it. The info and advice is what it is....useful.

Great video guys. Really enjoyed hearing from David and hearing a little more on how he approached things and it is quite refreshing that you can still go super fast without always looking at you power⚡ . Really good advise on how you just need to prepare and know what your facing in a course.📚 Top stuff Si and David... Would love to see an Ask GCN with David/Emma/Dan... Just Garmin Cervelo tales galore😉
