1. I was born and raised in Alabama (my family are Alabama fans as the 1st non HBCU grad in my family graduated from the Univ of Alabama)
2. I attended Undergrad at Duke (1993-1997)
3. I attended Grad School at UNC-Chapel Hill (2002-2004)
Rivalry perspective:
1. Alabama-Auburn: There is more pure disdain and constant bickering between Alabama-Auburn fans. Honestly, fans of either school actually get depressed when they lose to the other in football.
I recall (in Montgomery, Alabama at the time) in the 8th grade at school at the end of Physical Education Class (Fall 1988), the Friday before the Iron Bowl, fans of both teams got on opposing sides and it was almost a fight of 100 students (Bama fans) vs 100 students (Auburn fans). It was that serious.
2. Duke-UNC: The disdain is not as serious in terms of utter dislike of the other. Students from both schools actually get along.
Which rivalry is better:
1. Pure Disdain: Alabama-Auburn
***See below as Auburn is very inconsistent as a football program (e.g. more likely to go 11-1 in a season to 6-6 the next season which hurts the quality of the match-up)***
2. Overall year in-year out quality of the programs: Duke-UNC. This basketball match-up is more likely to be between 2 teams that are legit championship contenders than is the Alabama-Auburn football matchup.

I’m a big duke fan and sure if we lose I’ll be upset. But this game is going to be legendary and I’m so hyped. Also Hubert Davis went to my high school so either way whoever wins I’m happy

Duke alum and Duke fan here. I really don’t have much hate toward to UNC basketball team or their school in general. If UNC beats Duke, I am more upset by Duke not playing well rather than hating UNC which plays better than Duke. Same logic applies to other games as well. However I do see comments from UNC fans hating on Duke and they sound very angry. 😂 Kinda makes me feel like they dedicate their time and life into hating Duke. Lol. I also always cheer for ACC as a whole in the tournament. If ACC team other than duke wins a championship, that’s great for the conference and I wouldn’t be bothered much. I went to Duke for study and they offered the one of the best educations and the basketball experience, I couldn’t ask for more :)

As a current UNC student, I feel like the actual students and alums don’t have too much hatred for each other. Rather the people that have randomly decided to be fan of either team.
@@chanceex Yea. ACC is still a very competitive conference IMO but has been disregarded in some way, especially after seeing we already had success in the tournament this year.
@@samuelrice5162 I felt the same way when I was at school a few years back. Both fans were cheering for their own teams in a more respectful way.
The reason in my opinion is there’s not much to hate about UNC. For the most part we’ve had stand up coaching staffs and players. Duke has had some pretty scummy players and situations that people tend to just forget about because they are Duke. Carolina fans remember.

The top 3 sports in America are Football, Basketball, and Baseball. If American sports analysis talk about the greatest rivalry in sports then they'll mainly consider the sports I just mentioned. Futbol is just not that big in this country even though I agree it is the most popular sport in the world its just not to us Americans. But UNC vs Duke definitely is the best rivalry in sports imo

I agree to an extent. There are temporary rivalries between the players on certain teams. But the teams don't have rivalries because teams change so often these days. Back in the day, you had rotations that stayed together for 10+ years and pass on that rivalry to younger guys that then play with that team for 10+ years. Doesn't happen anymore

When comparing teams you have to look at Duke during the Coach K era because they were barely a team before him.
You do understand that Duke was built on coach K... let this sink in; Dean Smith and Roy Williams combined for 5 national titles and Coach K alone has 5, currently and Roy and Dean combined for 17 or 18 finals fours and coach K got 5 titles in 12.... so, idk what you're smoking, but it ain't knowledge.

So, you are the one who is smoking! Roy got three NCAA titles in 9 final fours. No coach won more NCAA titles than Roy since 2003.

BUT....This year is a perfect example as to why Duke/UNC is the best rivalry.
Duke beat UNC in the Dean Dome..UNC beat Duke at Cameron.
It goes back & forth more than one of the team goes on a stretch of wins.
When teams go on stretches (3-5 years of one dominating the other), it kind of ceases to be a rivalry.
Duke vs UNC continues to be a great showdown, consistently, every year because of the level of talent, coaches, and the state that both programs reside in.
It is just an all-time classic rivalry.
It's one sided...Alabama wins in large amount of the time... One sided rivalry..not the greatest Rivalry!

Carolina and Duke: the best rivalry in all of sport. The case: two schools located 7 miles from each other and who have 30% of the NCAA Men's Basketball Championships in the last 15 years (and many prior to that) can't be touched by other rivalries that go in and out from one decade to the next.
Definitely all of American sports. I may put Real Madrid-Barcelona and Manchester United-Liverpool in the conversation for best rivalry of all time, but the same thing they brought up is the consistency.

I went to Carolina and have lived in NC all my life. I don’t personally know a single duke fan. Their student body is a fraction of the size of UNC’s and most of them come from overseas or wealthy families in the northeast. I know people in Durham pull for duke but outside of that it’s all state and Carolina fans in the actual state of NC.
Clearly you either choose to ignore or just don't know who the most watched team and most followed team in the nation is. Look up the highest watched games in basketball (both NCAA and NBA) and then come back and rethink your comment.

The Lakers and Celtics haven't been rivals in years
UNC and Duke have consistently won titles and made final 4’s since the 90’s. 92 Duke/93 UNC, 09 UNC/ 10 Duke, 2015 Duke/2017 UNC and UNC played for the title in 2016. To win titles after one another in 3 different decades that’s consistency. Since 2000 UNC 7 final 4’s 3 championships Duke 5 Final 4’s 3 championships. That’s balance and in the rivalry with Bama and Auburn it’s very one sided as Auburn doesn’t consistently win enough. Lakers and Celtics rivalry was irrelevant from 1990-2007. UNC and Duke are 8 miles apart and have been battling top of the sport since coach K started coaching at Duke and he’s been there for 40 years.

@@CillerC3P0 since 2010 Bama is 8-4 vs Auburn. 7 of Bama’s wins were by at least 10 pts, 4 of the wins by 20 pts. Auburn doesn’t consistently make the playoffs and compete for national championships. UNC and Duke have been since the 90’s. Difference is UNC and Duke both are considered top 5 programs and in modern College basketball since 1985 when the field expanded to 64 teams they’ve been the top 2. Bama is the top program but Auburn is not even in the top 5 with 2 national championships (1957 and 2010).
Yeah, they are so close. I ran a virtual half marathon during covid after London was cancelled. I started at UNC and ran to Duke. I had to run a little bit of a circuitous route and a mile of laps at Duke Chapel to get in the 13.1.
Its way more passion in ncaa than it is in nba. This tops all basketball rivalry

JJ it's completely the opposite. I think Duke hates UNC more than the other way around. Lately Duke has been the premier program but historically UNC is the big brother and more historic program. When it comes to titles, legendary players, coaches y'all have been chasing us for a minute big dawg. Duke historically is just Coach K and a bunch of rich prep kids.

Lately duke has been the premier program? This Carolina’s 3rd final four in the last 6 tournaments and dukes 1st since 2015. The media blows coach k and duke every year but if you just look at the numbers Carolina has been the better program not only all time but also in recent years
