I think what makes the Duke/UNC rivalry special is that they score high marks in all of these categories. LA/Boston: no proximity, Auburn/Alabama: lopsided head to head (especially lately), Yankees/Red Sox: less proximity, play too often for any one game to matter.
I would be interested to hear if anyone can name a rivalry in sports that performs well in all areas.
Not in North America
Duke vs UNC is a national game. It is the pinnacle of college basketball. Auburn vs Alabama is a regional rivalry. No one outside of Alabama/SEC cares about it. The only reason it has JD national attention is because Alabama is Alabama under Saban. Auburn has not had legendary coaches like Alabama. They haven’t had the success like Alabama. Duke and Carolina are national brands in college basketball. Alabama is a national brand and auburn is not even close. Duke vs UNC wins
But Alabama has one of the largest fan bases in college sports. I have been All around the country and I see Alabama fans everywhere

I'm with JJ. The distance is what truly makes it special. You can't get away from the rivalry when you're in the Research Triangle area. Families(including mine) split along party lines when it comes to Duke vs UNC. I think Bama Auburn is more volatile from a fan perspective but Duke Carolina is better
Agreed grew up in this whole rivalry having family friends that are Carolina fans. But my whole family is duke fans think we’d disown anyone who wasn’t

Alabama vs Auburn would be a good rivarly but Auburn never wins anything. I live in Alabama and I put Duke vs NC ahead because North Carolina and Duke are ultra successful programs. Meanwhile Auburn's championship is usually hoping to beat Alabama. Never really to play for anything other than that game.
So the reason Duke NC is ahead is because they are battling for glory even beyond just that one game. Auburn usually just playing to say they beat Alabama. lol

I had a best friend who attended UNC as a huge Duke fan! Literally dressed in all Duke during the big games against HIS school 😂 There may not be criminal activity involved, but a rivalry that’s lopsided isn’t a real rivalry imo. And Bama rolls Auburn fairly often. Like it’s not just about beating each other heads up… we compete with titles! ACC season titles, ACC tournament titles, Final 4 appearances, NCAA Championships. We’re rivals all the way down to who has the best and most NBA players 😂.
This is 100% it. The rivalry has been held at every level and then some. And yesterday’s game was just a fine example of what this rivalry entails. 18 lead changes! 18! And no team led by more than 7. 50-60 years can be summed up in that 40 minute game.
Duke vs UNC is definitely the best rivalry in sports. Nothing comes close in terms of consistency and broad appeal. Baseball doesn't have that broad appeal needed to be considered the best. And football rivalries are here today and totally irrelevant tomorrow.

Duke beat UNC in the dean Dome..UNC beat Duke at Cameron.
It goes back & forth more than one of the team goes on a stretch of wins.
When teams go on stretches (3-5 years of one dominating the other), it kind of ceases to be a rivalry.
Duke vs UNC continues to be a great showdown, consistently, every year because of the level of talent, coaches, and the state that both programs reside in.

Alabama Is far more superior to Auburn. Duke and UNC is pretty evenly matched when in comes to conference champs, tournament champs, final fours, & national championship

Coach K's success at elevating the Duke program to successfully compete with Carolina is a major part of his legacy. Carolina now has the honor of stamping his retirement ticket once and for all.

The main reason is the outreach that the nba and ncaa started in the 70’s and 60’s and 80’s that continued through till the early 2000’s. Their outreach programs went to essentially all of Africa, Australia and Europe, and china, Japan, duke and unc alum were heavily involved in that. So a huge part of the world watches that game BecuAse of that.

Yes it is , it’s been over “the game” for a while. From 09-2014 the winner of the iron bowl won the SEC got to or won the national title. It’s easily a more nastier rivalry than ohio state michigan too and same w OU texas. People kill each other over the iron bowl and it’s sad

As a Chapel Hill native and an Auburn Alum I gotta go UNC v Duke. The games are always more competitive the iron bowl (Auburn v Bama) usually only competitive in recent memory when the game is at Auburn. I will say I think the fact that we have the game two times a year for Duke-UNC puts it over the top.
I do however think these are the best two rivalries, if Auburn were to have made the CFP in the recent years there would be a better argument for it.
No one in Florida cares about the Iron Bowl unless it has implications for one of the Big Three.. Everyone in Florida watches Duke vs North Carolina.

No rivalry can compare with the competitiveness of Carolina/Duke over the past 40 years. Just look at wins loses, points scored, last minute shots, etc.
1. The Iron Bowl is usually Alabama dominating. 2. No one ever really heard about it outside of Alabama before Nick Sabin resurrected Alabama. 3. Georgia Florida (Largest Cocktail Party) was way bigger than the Iron Bowl until just recently; now they get similar hype maybe.
Iron Bowl also doesn't get the hype that "The Game" gets and even that has been one-sided for 20 years.
Auburn plays Alabama very close
In our family, the rivalry is intense! We have four degrees from UNC and two degrees from Duke. My wife and I both work for Duke but live in Chapel Hill. Wife’s a UNC fan and I’m a Duke fan. Seriously folks, this rivalry is real!
I've been giving Dookie friends and co-workers the cold shoulder Since Sunday! I hope it comes down to the last second in double-overtime, with Caleb Love or Manek hitting a game winning 3 to send Duke home for good! See UNC has been great, consistent, and now with Coach Davis following the footsteps for Coach Williams and Smith...we still gotta see if Duke stays on par now that Coach K is gone. We've seen what Coach Davis can do, not let's see what Scheyer can do with Duke...they might go off into the sunset alongside Coach K for all we know.

Duke vs UNC is the best rivalry. Most consistent with excitement and skill. Most passionate fans and players when this game happens. Every adult and kid know about this rivalry. Even children know about this rivalry. This is a rivalry that is unavoidable and it runs deep. This is the rivalry that other rivalries watch. It is a rivalry like no other.

Lakers/Celtics rivalry haven’t been good since the 80s, Auburn/Alabama is not even the best rivalry in college football, Yankees/ Red Sox hasn’t been the same since the likes of Jeter, Ortiz, etc retired. I would probably say Duke/UNC is arguably the best rivalry in sports, but Michigan/Ohio State makes a strong case as well

bama auburn is easily the best rivalry in CFB peiole lose their lives over this game and it usually has a bigger impact on the CFB world. From 09-2014 the iron bowl winner got to the Sec championship and the natty and either won or lost it. Even 2017 auburn beat bama and almost stopped bama from seeing UGA later that year, Auburn almost did it again this year until bryce young had to go super saiyan. 2019 Auburn kept bama from making the CFP with mac jones at QB cause they were ranked 5 and then number 4 lost that weekend. It has more significance than ohio state michigan because ohio state is a top team but not playoff makers every year and michigan hasn’t been great in like 30 years until this year.

I’m a Clemson fan but I live in North Carolina and this is hands down the biggest rivalry. What makes it so good is because both teams are constantly good.
Consistency, national relevance, proximity and a difference in philosophy over how the programs are built and run all add to the rivalry. That's not even mentioning that UNC is a public university and Duke is a private one or that the majority of UNC's student body comes from instate while the majority of Dukes comes from outside the state.
Absolutely not. Duke vs. UNC is a rivalry for everyone except the actual players on the court. And that's who matters the most. These schools recruit so well that they don't have players who stay around long enough to get to know each other really well. UNC plays a fairly mature starting 5 this year. But Duke is mostly lowerclassmen, meaning that neither team has players who have built up much of a relationship. In the wide world of sports, we have a lot of teams with players who have played each other for many, many years. College in general obviously isn't going to compare to professional sports in this regard, but even if we limit our view to only college sports, we can find far better examples of real rivalries among players. What UNC and Duke amount to is a rivalry that the players inherited. People said to them, "Here you go - hate these dudes." And it just doesn't work that way. We're watching Duke and UNC play tonight. We don't see any of the tension that we see among professional athletes who have established competitive and sometimes even bitter relationships.

When you read these statements and then realise this is coming from a country who state that a team is world champions in a competition when teams from that country can only participate in. To say that this game is bigger than the El Classico, Liverpool vs Utd, Boca vs River Plate, Rangers vs Celtic and to some extent Brazil vs Argentina is laughable!

Like Europeans & the rest of the world don’t send women to the Ms. Universe pageant even though there aren’t any Martian or Venusian women in the competition. Maybe El Classico is in the running with Carolina Duke.
In order to understand why this is the greatest rivalry in sports, you would have to have watched every UNC vs Duke game from the very beginning , when coach K started coaching at Duke University. Dean Smith was already regarded as the greatest coach in UNC history, before Coach K turned Duke into a powerhouse. Only then is when you will be able to grasp as to why this is the greatest rivalry. What makes the rivalry even bigger has a lot to do with the ACC tournament. On the norm, UNC and Duke draw high caliber players every year and are ranked in the top 10 nationally. Between the two schools, from that era, you can almost say both schools have had a ranking of one or two, most years during that era. That speaks in volume compared to a lot of the other colleges. This is another thing that intensifies that rivalry.
Last year for Coach K has been talked about a lot. But this is Coach Davis first year as a head coach. Only 10 coaches have ever made it to final 4 in their first year. And 2 are from UNC

UNC Duke, the most prestigious rivalry, because in a season, they'll play each other twice, at the very least, but if they play each other in the ACC tournament, that would make it 3, then you got march madness and that makes 4 times that they could possibly meet, that's the best rivalry, Alabama/ Auburn is great, but they don't have that many games played against each other like UNC and Duke has, and Alabama has been making this a lopsided rivalry at that, this year UNC vs Duke 3 games, Duke destroyed UNC, and mostly all the experts, were almost counting them out, but what happened next, UNC spoils coach KS final home game, and then a rubber match game in the final 4, it's as good as a Hollywood script, doesn't get any better than that, period.

Marcus Spears doesn't know what he's talking about when it comes to rivalries no matter how much hype he gives to the Alabama Auburn football game each year. It might be big in Alabama and even the SEC, but the Carolina Duke rivalry is one known worldwide and one where like someone said it doesn't matter the record of either team you can always anticipate a game that exceeds all others. And it really hasn't been that important over the years, at least most of the existence of the ACC. Duke frankly hasn't been really good for very long because in the wake of Vic Bubas leaving at the end of the sixties to become an AD they had a series of coaches starting with Bucky Waters, Neill McGeachy, Bill Foster, and even in the early years of Mike Krzyzewski who lost most of their games against Carolina. It was only in the nineties when Duke became the major rival for the Tar Heels spurred on by the Coach K public relations department. Much of it I'm sure was resentment over how Dean Smith year in and year out dominated the conference. Many refused to believe Smith was a genuinely great human being.
But they were wrong Smith was not only that he was one of the greatest basketball minds to ever live who could have won more titles if he hadn't had the best interest of his players in mind. He told them to go pro when he thought it was advantageous for them to do so. Worthy wanted to return, so did Michael, and he told them to enter the draft. And then suggested their contracts have clauses that would award them a bonus if they returned to school and graduated with a degree. Krzyzewski wants that kind of admiration and so went about the pretense that he was friends with the sainted Smith as his health was getting worse and he faced death. Dean Smith nor Roy Williams would have never retired like him like a rock star making one last tour wanting everyone to pay homage to him. Smith never liked the glare of publicity and Roy Williams was equally humble. Krzyzewski is the ultimate attention hound, a basketball demigod if you will so color me skeptical about his having one iota of humility. Ask Corey Magette's mother about his selfish phone call to her. And he turns out dirty basketball players, which as I see it is a reflection of him.

As a Tar Heel fan I don’t view Duke as a little brother or a big brother. I view the Blue Devils as a true equal. North Carolina St and Wake Forest they’re definitely the little brothers of duke and North Carolina.
Wake Forrest yes I agree with you. But you are too young apparently to remember when NC State was ascendant and the primary rival and Duke was the little brother.
Much as I dislike him Coach K changed all of that for Duke. And much as I wish it weren't true the scandal that brought down Jimmy Valvano and then his untimely death really destroyed what had been a major national force in college basket ball with two NCAA tournament titled in an 8 year span one against the legendary UCLA dynasty against Coach Wooden and the other against probably one of the greatest teams never to win a title in the U of Houston during the Phi Slamma Jamma Era.
I truly hope that this year's Final 4 run for the Pack wasn't a mere fluke because strong instate rivals bolster a quality program at UNC. To be the best you have to beat the best and having to face off against another national title contender every year is part of what makes Duke vs UNC the greatest sports rivalry in the country.

Not even close. It's Duke vs UNC is the best rivalry in sports. And I'm an NC State fan. Auburn and Alabama is good, but too many years where it didn't matter to anyone outside of Alabama. Nothing on the line.

Best rivalry in sports? Not even close. Red Sox and Yankees is the best rivalry in sports. Period? Why? Yankee fans and Red Sox fans hate each other. I grew up in New York City and I used to live in North Carolina. Duke and Carolina fans shop at the same Walmart. They marry each other. Much different than the Yankees and the Red Sox. There is a literal hatred between Yankee and Red Sox fans. Yankee fans will tell Red Sox fans don't come to New York City. Best rivalry in sports.. Yankees and Red Sox.
