This song kind of breaks my heart. As a little sister myself, I know Zoe is hearing this as a last and only connection to her big brother, taking comfort in that fact that he noticed her and loved her. but it's all lies. These aren't the words of a loving brother that was so proud of and loved his little sister, who he felt too estranged from to talk to, like Zoe thought she was hearing. These are just the thoughts of a boy in her class enamored with her but lacking the courage to act on it without hiding behind some kind of excuse.

october 17th, 2020, i lost my older brother. it still breaks my heart to listen to this song. i've been sobbing for hours now after watching the movie. my mom always tells me how much he loved me, even if i don't remember him all that well. it's so hard to cry over someone that you miss so much, even if you didn't know them that well.
the last thing he said to me in person was "you're ungrateful."
the final thing he said to me, the night before he died, was "i love you."
i still message his account sometimes. i'll never get an answer.
I'm genuinely sorry for your loss. I am praying for you even as I write this. To lose someone is very hard, especially when that person seems to take some of the words and memories that we long to hear from them. But I know how the plan of God works, and I know he loved you very much! We came from a heavenly home to a brief time on this earth, and we all loved each other. We never would have considered saying or doing some of the mean things we do.
In heaven, we celebrated the beauty in one another, but then we get down here in this mortal realm and get so mixed up and confused by the dark mists of life and the challenges that swirl around our minds, and sometimes we forget to speak and act our best!
But in the realm of eternity, there is angelic and Godly love supporting and sustaining us-- more than we can possibly imagine. Someday we will understand it all, but for now, hopefully, we look to God and find comfort in knowing that only through Jesus Christ can we find peace and healing from all that ails us.
Heavenly Father has a plan for us to be together with our families again and to find joy in this life, even when we have experiences that feel like they are breaking us. I will pray you will discover God's plan for you, and that you will live a life of service and love and the truth so that you will find peace in your search for answers.

The ‘young man with social difficulties’ is named Evan Hansen. The ‘deceased student’ is named Connor Murphy. The girl in this song, Connor’s sister, is named Zoe Murphy! Connor’s and Zoe’s father is named Larry Murphy while their mother is named Cynthia Murphy.
Basicallyyyyyy (whoops here’s the spoilers) Connor commits suicide, Cynthia and Larry believe Evan knew Connor, Evan goes along with the lie. And whoops he has a crush on Zoe which is basiCalLY what tHis SONG is except he claims everything he says in this song is what Connor toLd HIm.

For all those saying this song would be cute if it hadn't been based on lies:
-It isn't technically based off lies because it's what Evan really feels toward Zoe, however doesn't want to admit it or doesn't feel ready to admit it just yet, so he tells her Connor thought all this stuff about her
-And yes, I get it, false hope, lying technically, HOWEVER, if you think about it, this could have positive repercussions on Zoe's mental wellbeing. Think about it; Zoe and Connor were never close and never had a proper brother/sister relationship, and when Connor died, she never got to give him a proper goodbye. Moreover, Zoe (probably) felt as though in their whole life, she had never left anything good for Connor to hold on to, and as though Connor never left anything good for her either, but with Evan saying all this positive stuff about her, it leads her to think that he actually admired all those tiny things she considered insignificant about herself, and it also leaves her with a positive aspect of her brother she had never been able to find before (a more sentimental and sensitive side about him. That's why she gets excited when Evan says "It looked pretty cool when you had indigo streaks in your hair" and she also says '"he just seemed so far away" and "It's like i don't know anything"')

Gosh, this reminds me of my feelings towards my only friend. She already has a boyfriend but I always try my best to cheer her up. One day I made up a person online who was in love with there best friend. I claimed I meant them and asked Madison how she'd react if something like that happened to her. She didn't respond. I kept my feelings inside since 3rd grade. I wish she only knew how much I truly loved her.

Evan isn't using this song to get Zoe to like him. He's telling her what he thinks she would need to hear during what he considers a tragic period where she'd be mourning her brother, unaware that Zoe's true feelings aren't that at all, as expressed in Requiem when he wasn't there to listen to her. But it's also because he doesn't have the courage to admit his own feelings to her since he thinks she'd never love the real him.
This isn't really related to the song and dont get me wrong I love it but I have a question to everyone...ok so my girlfriend is very suicidal and thinks no one cares about her and I dont even k ow were to start by telling her how much I care about her and even when I do tell her she doesnt belive me and she told me her mom found her pills and it hurt to hear her say that to know what she was thinking of doing and I just dont know what to do any advise??
My first time hearing this I thought her brother just went away like cut ties with her family or went to college and her sister is just missing her brother and the guy Evan (who's her brothers bff) was making things to comfort and lowkey confess his feelings to the girl. But well I'm not far but I didn't know that her brother dies and that the songs was a lie huhu ( Evan didn't know her Brother at all)
