The story of the Heinzellmännchen (Mythical race akin to gnomes) is connected to the German city of Cologne. The gnomes were small creatures who lived underground, but surfaced during the night when the people were asleep. They did all the work that had to be done, so the citizens of Cologne could relax. The fairy tale tells that the tailor´s wife got curious about the gnomes, and scattered dried peas on the floor to catch them in the act. The gnomes slipped and slid on the hard peas, and were infuriated. They disappeared forever, leaving the citizens of Cologne to do all of their own work from then on!
