Haha I had the big container so I thought 20 quid to make one better than 70 quid shop bought. I have no idea where those shards of metal came from, it’s a bit of a mystery. Have you got your engine back in yet ?

I just checked for the hole in the crankcase near the output shaft, and I have the exact same hole of the same diameter, with no broken aluminum or whatever. I am thinking of a lubrication system using oil vapor, for the shaft and the shaft bearing, as well as the clutch shaft bearing.
We are at the same point on dismantling and cleaning the engine. I managed to borrow from a Yamaha dealership the special tool to dismantle and reassemble the crankshaft bearings, it seems essential but I am missing the hydraulic press.
I'm also going to work on the cylinder heads, for fun, between cleaning the gaskets (not fun at all ...)
As with all the previous videos, I'm looking forward to the next one!

Ah that’s interesting to know, I did wonder if it was wear from the gear or just badly machined as the metal there is so thin, as it’s right on the tooth of the gear, that’s what I assumed caused it, but wasn’t sure. As there is no passage out, oil would just build up in the housing with nowhere to go if it was meant as a lubrication system, and there is no oil passage feeding the hold and I imagine it will just get a bit of fling from the gears but who knows. I have a bearing driver of the right diameter so will freeze that, heat the surrounding aluminium and hopefully push the new one straight in. Good luck with your’s but why are you stripping it down ?

      @telenndu5575 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@memybikeni9931 it looks really similar to yours, and i didn't notice any particular wear or movement in the gear.
      Two hypotheses for me:
      - Oil vapor supply to lubricate this place (no pressurized lubrication I think), and it goes down through the channel where the clutch lever passes (the one fixed with the cruciform screw).
      - System to keep the same pressure throughout the engine
      But nothing certain ...
Good luck with the bearing, hope it works for you! if necessary, the part number for the tool is 90890-04074.
For my part, the dismantling comes after the arrival of a suspicious noise when the engine was in load, a "clong clong" at the bottom which made think of the connecting rods. It was the opportunity to dismantle my first engine.
Once dismantled, nothing to report, so I change the important parts, discovering how it works, and I decided to get started thanks to your videos, I wouldn't have taken the plunge otherwise.

@@telenndu5575 Ah you are right about the clutch actuator being an exit point, you may be onto something there. I didn’t think of that. It’s annoying when you take it apart expecting to find the cause of your problem and can’t see anything obviously wrong. Have you changed the big end bearings out ? I measured the side clearances too and mine were perfectly okay,so I’m not going to take them apart at all. Thanks for the part number I’ll take a look at that but it should be a fairly easy push fit. I think with a cold bearing and a hot case I recon it’ll drop in reasonably easily. I’m looking forward to taking the heads apart on mine as I really do need to find the source of the steel fragments laying in the case. It’s all a bit of a mystery.

@@memybikeni9931 Like you said, it's annoying not to find the cause! For my part, at the Yamaha garage, they were convinced that it was the connecting rod bearings too, but when I put the crankshaft and the bearings in their hands, they did not understand because everything was clean. Some metal flakes in the drained oil, but nothing representative of the "clong clong" sound.
for the ball bearings of the gearbox, I do not change them, they are in good condition.
for the crankshaft bearings, I will try it tomorrow with the Yamaha special tool, and a hydraulic press from a friend.
For the connecting rod bearings, I change them by following the calculation to be carried out (number on the connecting rods minus number on the crankshaft = n ° of connecting rod bearings to order, from 1 to 4, with the associated colors).
The fragments do not come by chance from the oil pump? pure hypothesis, but could explain the lack of lubrication at the same time? I have to disassemble mine to make sure as I don't know what the internal material of the pump is.

@@telenndu5575 good point on the oil pump/filter possibly. The fragments in my engine could have been in there long before I got the bike and from an old filter. All my transmission bearings seem fine too. I had no noise of course just seazed, but all a bit weird. Maybe the noise in yours is worn dogs on the gears ? Maybe slapping in and out.

Just searched for “Complete Gasket Set Full Yamaha XV 535 Virago 1988-2002” on eBay but they are playing fast and loose with the word complete so probably worth getting it from Yamaha directly.

@@memybikeni9931 was it of good quality? Were the gaskets 3 ply like Yamahas? That would cost a lot going through Yamaha just the 2 of head gaskets cost more than the whole kit. So if good quality and same as factory I'll get from ebay, do you still have who you got yours from like the name and/or brand if they're of good quality. Thanks 🙏 your video has gave me confidence in taking it apart! Mine started leaking right out the bottom of the case I can even see gasket sealant messed up where it's leaking. I've been thinking about getting a special Permatex sealing spray that supposedly wicks through the cracks and seals it but hey a good rebuild would be good for it it's a 95 and sat for 18 years...

@@karlh4313 odd that it’s started leaking after 18 years, and is it leaking from a side case, or the actual crank cases as the side cases are gaskets, but the crank cases use just sealant. Anyway here is the link for you www.ebay.co.uk/itm/144075418491. The head gaskets were 3 ply yes and seemed fine and the same spec and material etc, but the rest of them not so much. Get a good quality black sealant for the crank cases and make sure the surfaces are good and smooth.
