I wonder how many of those enthusiastic volunteers shown in front of Cole Brothers actually survived the bloodbath that awaited them. My maternal grandfather failed the medical, being classified as ‘Grade 3, unfit for active service’. As a consequence he was sent to join the Army Pay Corp in Nottingham. As a solicitor’s clerk he was probably well suited to his new job. It was in Nottingham that he met my grandmother whom he married in 1921. He was demobbed on a Friday and returned to his job in Sheffield on the Monday following having never fired a shot in anger.

Everything has changed so much since these early photo shots. Thank-you for showing them.

It's a bitter sweet experience seeing these old pictures. I don't go into town these days if I can help it. It's too dynamic.

I don't venture into Town either, unless there's a need or passing through it. Those rare times I am in Town I notice another old building has demolished and another disgusting eyesore building has been put up. The council have totally ruined Town.

@@gama3302 Yep & not to mention driving. Some of the new no through roads look pointless.

Thanks, enjoyed that. The clue to the tractors is on the van, the business with the bloke in the flat cap out front (where 'Billy Big Balls' bar is now) was Samuel Wilson and Son who were a tractor dealership.

Makes you want to step into the photo for a while and say hello

Interesting, I was thinking about strolling the streets and viewing the architecture. It never crossed my mind to say hello. Lol

Greart Victorian design cover. I hope it was pre AI, seriousliy - it would be interesting if AI could create such a knowing design, I really doubt it. Me --- born - Sheffield '55. Hastlor Rd South , just down from the Fish Pond Church,
PS Anyone out there to remember Father Sutherlamd in the 60's. He came by our house on a Saturday night to watch the Avengers and have fish and chips from Metams. I thinink the chippy was there for decades.

I thought the van advertising Ferguson tractor systems with a West St address was a half decent clue... And they all seem to be Grey Fergies

I wish Snig Hill could be explained a little more. It became a disaster during WW2.
