The music is so haunting......the buildings in the older photos had so much more character......always sad to see churches and pubs have been demolished!
The old stuff may have been difficult or dirty (I grew up in it) but the people had souls. The replacement is barren, depressing, architecturally dead and soul-less
In almost all the pictures the older ones look better. We're always hearing about lack of housing, but these pictures show locations where homes once stood are all too often waste land today. So very sad.
Thank you so much for showing the old Sheffield that I loved, but which has gone. Even so, I dearly wish that I did not have to leave. I could quite happily live in the new Sheffield.
It's slightly depressing to see grand buildings just disappear. I see Sheffield every day and I clearly have no idea of it's history and heritage. I'm a southerner originally, but have lived in Sheffield longer than I've lived anywhere else. A very interesting video, thanks for posting it pal.
My grandmother was born there and this is the way I can get some flavor of the old to match my brief visit with the new. Thank you for some continuity.
I'm not old enough to remember what a beautiful looking place my city used to be, so thanks for these. I can only conclude that a high trust, indigenous society has been deliberately destroyed by the policies of our governmental system for decades
Wow, it went from a beautiful thriving city with beautiful buildings and churches into a fucking shithole before my eyes. And people ask me why I moved to Liverpool. -_-
If you ever wonder why there is a housing shortage, look no further than this. The rate of AFFORDABLE HOUSE building is pathetic, but deliberately done so as to keep house prices in general artificially high. Pensions and other investments are tied up in the housing market, so to flood the market would cause major financial problems, as if there aren;'t enough as it is.
Yeah true, not sure where my original comment has gone??! Its still a great city. I remember working at the post office building on pond st, feel so sorry for its state now. Such a nice building on the inside.
I worked at Burgess mens store@(2.27) it was my very first job after leaving school back in 63. then I worked across the st at Banners dept store now im getting all teary eyed . good mems thank you so much .
I'm not from Sheffield but from Donny, I must admit these vids are great! What software did you use please? I run a FB page called Doncaster Bygone Years and would like to do the same thing for Donny! Cheers! :-)
I use Ulead Videostudio 7SE, which is the budget version of the program. It is much more complicated nowadays and into double figures in the version number. Good enough for TH-cam, though!
Forgot to mention ; for lining up the before and after photos themselves, I use MGI Photosuite 3, which is another old program. I run win98se on the old pc, so that is why I use the old software.
What strikes me if how much housing has disappeared, only to be replaced my waste land. Why can't the council build homes there instead of taking up greenfield land?
in not just this then and now but in them all, i seem to see a streak of beautiful churches and chapels that looked stunning have all been torn down and left as a wasteland or turned into a housing estate. its really sad and such a damn shame
At 0:15 I thought that was a car on fire for a second lol. Thanks for this, great to see a bit of past Sheffield. I feel its losing its character as they are re-gening the place into glassy neo cheap quality buildings, dont know, I love the heavy brick architecture. I loved the dodgy box housing like Norfolk park flats, I dont know why they didnt just clean them up, were they that bad? As for what they are 'doing' to park hill estate, Im lost for words.
The city where I was born. Buildings torn down to permit feral trees to cover lack of foresight. 1960s & 1970s thinking of stupid left wing municipal politicians. Proof that city planners don’t know how to ... demolishing local architectural gems. Good series!
It"s about the people what live or lived there ? Being a ex sailor I can warrant there isn"t many places with a "feel" and togetherness than South Yorkshire . My family originated in Ireland a couple of hundred years ago so most were splattered over northern Britain and some Emigrated but all speak well of the Sheffield connection as my Dad"s Ma lived there all her long life ,a stones throw from Sheffield Wednesday"s ground . The small house is still there a few 100 yards from my present address and it"s hard to believe she brought - up six kids in that terraced house .As for @bruceburns from Aus. educate yourself Brucie Boy - All of my family had their own home by 21 years of age and most had their own businesses . Sheffield was a old city and some parts needed demolishing ,but you know what us Yorkie"s say " Where"s there"s muck ,there"s Brass " ?. The family that stayed put in Britain are seriously better - off than the one"s that went to Aus . 🧐.
Wish them days were back compared to these days..
Love to all the good people of Sheffield....

The early photos look better than the most recent ones .

My sentiments too ... felt sad about the character of the old buildings and then seeing wasteland, as you said where homes were, church etc.
@@mop714 A lot of churches lost ! I s'pose because the community has gone.
Get rid of houses no need for pubs and churches what a clever idea🤔

Enjoyed this video and all the others in the series. The music sets the mood perfectly Hope there is more to come. Thanks

Superb vids m8,a must even if a very sad watch for most of us oldie sheffielders,thanks..
Superb photos and job mate thank you
Wow emotional. Good old days.
True.
If you look on the continent most cities keep their old. classic buildings and in a good, clean condition, too.
I'm not old enough to remember what a beautiful looking place my city used to be, so thanks for these. I can only conclude that a high trust, indigenous society has been deliberately destroyed by the policies of our governmental system for decades
Can you do one of all the old sheffield pubs
Sheffield is the best place in the world

So true, some body that knows what they are talking about
Do you think it may be related to mass immigration?
Buy to Let caused a lot of problems.

Yes.
Yes I do

I hope you are happy!
How nice. Guess why Sheffield is crime ridden.
2:27 Banners ain't even on that shot, that's how old that picture is
@VINCENTROAD Sheffield is still awesome though. Green parks, good shopping and great countryside. Good nightlife too and it's far from ugly!
Thank You for this

Is it just Attercliffe and Hilsborough you feature?
Good to see the old Sutherland Road, swimming baths building, where I learned to sswim back in the late 60's.
Do you remember Mr Price, the coach?
Where I learnt to swim too...
Need a update to be honest so much as changed again since this video was up loaded
Should say where these places are !
What is the building at 2.40 and the church at 4.00?
What strikes me if how much housing has disappeared, only to be replaced my waste land. Why can't the council build homes there instead of taking up greenfield land?
That would probably mean the council thinking and doing what they should instead of nothing or wasting money.
Can't give you what you want and NEED, they must WASTE your tax money
Lovely music 'park' now at the back of the once wonderful Debenhams.
in not just this then and now but in them all, i seem to see a streak of beautiful churches and chapels that looked stunning have all been torn down and left as a wasteland or turned into a housing estate. its really sad and such a damn shame
What us the music I love it
Brian Eno "An Ending"
Turn your speakers off, then, It's quite simple.
May be a rose tinted view butttt personally much prefer the old sheffield, having lived some 57yrs here it's not the sheffield it used to be

It would be useful if you put the addresses of these photos. Music very annoying.
they took all the charictor out of the city

Feral trees? Haha
A lot of money in demolition.
Musics to sentimental like me lol
Then was better! !
Whatever happened.
Why do places in 60/70's britain look more maintained than today? I.E. clean roads, cut grass, neater buildings...
*too
Then is better
Great film pitty all the roads lead to nowhere now everything has been demolished 😠
Nice, comparing this with Kuwait, Kuwait is still in the past :(
Only in this country they are quick to knock stuff down...i lived in italy and they just repurpose and renovate ...never knock anything down.
The Farfield is all boarded up now abnd the white Ford Cortina has gone
I am from Australia and Britain to me looks like a desolate wasteland of poverty and minimalist lifestyles .
Come visit. It's grand.
look at it now it's amazing this was 8 years ago almost 9
Bounce swfc You only mentioned the good things , there are things ten times worse here .

Sheffield has no shame preferring stodgy over classic architecture.
Pat Hemsworth
Sheffield the only place where the before looks better than the now in 100 percent of the places everywhere is a wasteland what a dump.
stinkffield
Whichever way you look at it - the place & the people are still 1000 times better that the pile of manure that is London ?.
