      @@timothyegappen1936 Hi I got past this eventually, so you can too! I practised it really slowly, took me a while to realise either my left hand was playing a note at the same time as the right hand, or it was not. Just kept doing this over and over and eventually built up speed until I could do it without really thinking. Good luck!

      I agree too. kind of being stuck on this piece. I am guessing it is hard because lots of pinky and 4th fingering?

    This one was hard for me the first time, but it helped me learn to play notes that are all lined up at the same time. After I got the hang of it I decided to spice up the third line. Starting with measure 10 I play, F-G-F-D-B-D-F-E-D then end on D instead of A in measure 13. Then in Measure 16 I play a broken C chord instead of continuing with a broken G7. Sounds better to me.
    Like you suggested in another lesson, the first time I learn/play everything exactly as written. Then I have fun with it.

    At 72 years of age, I've finally found the time to learn to play the piano. I am so glad that I found you. With the help of your videos and a minimum of one hour of practice per day, I am now up to page 55, playing with confidence and...enjoying every minute....Thank you....Thank You....Thank you!

    I was learning this song and got so far. I can play it but I still need practice to perfect it before I move on. I came here to hear if I was playing it right and had the rhythm right. Thanks for you earlier comment about trying to work it out before listening to the track or someone else play it. I was about to start listening before working it out as the songs get more difficult but Ill continue this path. I think its good advice. My goal is to make it through this book by the end of the year and maybe play some Christmas tunes for the family or something.

    • @LetsPlayPianoMethods

      This is common. Go really really slowly and focus on each finger in each hand as you play the notes. You can speed it up over a long period of time. I had the same problem when I started piano.

    Hey, once again thanks for your tutorials & guidance. I've taken your advice & work on the melody without watching first. Certainly it's reinforcing that I've got note timing pretty well. Ok I've now also purchased companion books L1 Greatest hits movies & L1 All time favourites & at this stage of L1 tutorial it suggests implanting materials therefrom. While this will slow my course lesson progress, I guess it will reinforce hand dexterity, finger & hand independence & note reading. Is it wise to follow this pathway?

    • @LetsPlayPianoMethods
      @LetsPlayPianoMethods  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You are welcome. Yes, I suggest following the books as suggested in your method book. The idea is not to get through the book the fastest possible, but to play as much music as possible while going through the book. You can do multiple books at a time, most people do.

    Hi. I am just learning this but have a question. I can play this slowly quite well however , I don’t feel my hand a working separately. For example, if I started playing the left hand broken chords in rhythm on their own, I couldn’t just jump in with the right hand melody without messing up. Starting from the beginning together is fine. Almost feels like both hands are working together but not independently . Worried I might struggle further through the book and whether I need to work on this. Hope this makes sense.

    • @LetsPlayPianoMethods
      @LetsPlayPianoMethods  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It takes time to get both hands to cooperate. Take it slowly and keep going. You can go back through the book again later and you will find it much easier then.

  • @patrickwall8517

    You're correct it is meant to be a happy song. it's a song a crew of sailors would sing while working together. They cold all sing together or each one could take a verse.

    I'm having trouble with this my arm and wrist when I am playing the broken cords. I have really small hands. Is there any tips you can give me to help with this

    • @LetsPlayPianoMethods
      @LetsPlayPianoMethods  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is hard to say without seeing what you are doing. How small is small? Can you reach an octave. If so, your hands are big enough. It should not be painful. If it is then you need to see a doctor about it. Otherwise, just use gravity to help push the notes down (use the weight of the hand). It is the same as blocked chords except the notes go down one at a time. Try it slowly at first and speed up the notes later.

    • @LetsPlayPianoMethods
      @LetsPlayPianoMethods  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      People don't agree on this. It is nice to hear the piece first, but it is a great test to see how close you can come to getting it correct if you try to learn it first. Whichever method you do (and it will probably be a little of both), don't rely on having to hear the music first before trying it out. Learn to read the music correctly so you have confidence on your playing.

    I have been struggling with this song. So far I have played through Alfred’s Adult Piano Book without a metronome. I’m looking at getting one. Any recommendations?

    • @LetsPlayPianoMethods
      @LetsPlayPianoMethods  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not really. Metronomes are all pretty good. The electric ones have to be plugged in, but the battery-operated ones are nice. Those are the ones I use the most. The wind up ones have to be wound up and that can be annoying.

      Don’t buy a metronome. Try to develop you inner sense of rythm. I’m still on this book and I was very tempted first to use a metronome, but my teacher convinced me not to do so. No I don’t need it that badly, if I struggle with rythm I play very slowly to figure out where the strong beats are. It has worked

    • @LetsPlayPianoMethods

      You can take it around eighth note equals 120 to 128, but if you cannot play it that fast then take it as fast as you can play it accurately.

    • @LetsPlayPianoMethods
      @LetsPlayPianoMethods  ปีที่แล้ว

      If it is hard for now, sure. It depends on why it is hard. If you are finding piece after piece too hard, it means you are going too fast. Time to go back and go over everything again slower. Otherwise, you can always come back to this one later when you are better at piano.
