From the west coast and just found this channel, if you're ever back in SoCal again and are looking for a decent bite, then I would highly recommend skipping the bass fisheries and actually hitting the saltwater harbors instead. In our state, we have 3 different species saltwater bass that are very similar to the largemouth (not including other inshore fish like halibut and white sea bass). In fact, our most common saltwater bass, the spotted bay bass, has an amazing pull to pound ratio (better than a smallmouth) which will make a fun fight for that combo and will pretty much bite on everything but top-water (subsurface is the closest your usually get). Not to mention our decent offshore fishing and local bluefin tuna. If you still want the bass however, going a little bit out of the city to fish our reservoirs north of LA with a boat rental would be your best bet without having to look for secret spots or worry about trespassing. Anyways, I'm glad to see some urban fishing content and hope this helps, tight lines.
Wow! Have never had that happen, but I've seen a couple of events like that, but they always were able to get the animal and get their bait back. I'm sure you are far from being the first to have this happen. Tough deal buddy! Hope the rest of your trip goes much better. Thanks for sharing!
