The man from Earth was the movie. He didn't invite his friends, he was trying to leave town before they noticed he wasn't aging. Remarkable movie, worth a watch no matter your religion. Best part is it all takes place in roughly one room.

I think one of the things that gets overlooked in a lot of things like WWII era obsessions with the occult or fiction is that where the grains of truth existed in historical documents weren't always as clearly known, because history was often a mix of half-truths written by the victor and not always overly focused on strict fact. That gets heavily influenced by culture and predominant religion that's also interested in reinforcing its own cultural mythos over time, while also making themselves seem exceptional.
While we're fairly sure Greek Fire is a real thing that's been lost to time, something like Thor's Hammer or the Holy Grail are also things with some fragments of potential truth where it's difficult to know specifics without a lot of investment in research to what parts of that legend have basis in history.
Anything referring to artifacts that had some sort of property with potential military application is going to give a lot of incentive if it can provide an exclusive advantage against your opponent. That's how you end up with things like the US and Soviets both looking into psychic and supernatural research, because even on the TINY possibility that some grain of that exaggerated power is real, you can't let your opponent get that type of advantage over you.
That's how something that likely started out as sentimental artifacts like a cup Jesus drank out of then gained a legacy tied to Jesus' miracles, which then became a point of contention for outside parties looking to take it, and then the sentimental value & supernaturally practical value just get caught up in this weird tug-of-war that only amplifies that legend over time. So, you end up with all the sort of crazy stuff that happens with people who have a semi-legitimate incentive to fund research into it for their own gains, even when they're not the people who desperately WANT to believe it, there's still positive incentive for them to treat those things as being credible even if they're incredible stories.

John in DaVinci's the Last Supper doesn't have a beard, because according to the gospels he was basically a teenager at the time. That's why he looks a little androgynous -- and it can't be excluded that Leonardo used one of his pretty boy-toys for the model.
The painting itself is in bad shape partly because Leonardo used an experimental technique to paint it and it started deteriorating almost immediately. The version most of us are used to had been repainted multiple times over the centuries. A recent restoration removed all the overpainting, and what we see now is what's left of Leonardo's actual work. Parts where paint is missing entirely were filled in with a plain brown-gray wash.

King Arthur as written in the various stories isn't 'real' no, but historically there is a lot of discussion about him having been a Celtic or Welsh warlord from the post Roman era, most likely a compilation of hero kings from the time. There being a tomb for King Arthur isn't strange. Whether it houses a figure who could have been the basis of the tales of King Arthur is a matter of debate,

The "Last Supper" was painted by Da Vinci between 1495 and 1498. It's a fresco, painted directly onto plaster. However, Leonardo experimented with his materials and he used pigments that are not actually attached to the wall they are painted on and they began flaking a few years after the work was completed. As it was painted in the monastery's refectory or dining room, the steam and smoke from the adjoining kitchen made inroads on the painting as well. There have been decades of mistreatment and neglect, and the efforts to restore/repair or even slow down the deterioration have been largely unsuccessful.

there is another big Last Supper painting, painted just above the place where the princess of the Grail was buried.
This romanesque painting is dated about year 1.080 .
About 30 meters from it, the Holy Grail is in display. Into a wide walls chamber, into a extremely strong glass urn with movement sensors. It has the appearance the trouvadours told : "a golden chalice covered by jeweels." And it has wroten on it the name of the princes : IN NOMINE DOMINI URRACCA FREDINANDI (in the name of the Lord, Urraca, Ferdinands daugther )
All of this exists. It is not a legend.

Chretien de Troyes wrote Chivalric Romances, which were called Romances not with the more mdoern meaning of a focus on romantic love, but of:
"The character or quality that makes something appeal strongly to the imagination, and sets it apart from the mundane; an air, feeling, or sense of wonder, mystery, and remoteness from everyday life; redolence or suggestion of, or association with, adventure, heroism, chivalry, etc.; mystique, glamour"
This typically applies to the Arthurian Romances, and Charlemagne, though there is, of course, always also the Romance of the Three Kingdoms in China,

  • @the-chillian

A medieval "romance" was not a novel. It was a kind of storytelling poem that would be sung by troubadours and minstrels -- although it arguably evolved into the modern novel. A modern "romance novel" is something else entirely.

Fun fact about Da Vinci's *The Last Supper* painting: it was a bit of an experiment for him. Da Vinci wasn't a big fan of painting on walls, being mostly known for his oil painting, which doesn't quite work with wall painting. But he was commissioned to paint on a wall, so he was going to do it (eventually that is. Da Vinci was notorious for his lax approach to deadlines). Still instead of using the tried and true method of fresco painting - that is - painting onto wet plaster with thin paints applied in layers, allowing the pigment to soak into the plaster layer, he used egg tempura on a base of white lead, gesso, pitch, and mastic. While this method had been used before it was not recommended by basically anyone for painting walls, and for good reason. As we see, the painting has greatly deteriorated over time, and in fact we're left with a bit of a "ship of Theseus" thing going on here: very little of Leonardo's original work actually remains, having needed to be constantly restored and topped up throughout the centuries. It isn't just that the painting is old, we can see some beautifully preserved Renaissance frescoes in the Sistine chapel, Michelangelo's work on which was started and completed only about 20 years after Da Vinci's *The Last Supper*. It's simply a matter of method combined with some environmental factors that has led to a big problem for art historians and conservationists. So the fact it does indeed look a bit shit now, well...don't be too hard on them 😅

Aside from him potentially having children, there's also a very good chance that Jesus had siblings as well.
Even if we agree on Mary being a virgin when she had Jesus, she was Joseph's wife for the rest of her life after that, and theres no way Old Jo stayed married to her without getting any. Technically, since Joseph and Mary hadn't had sex before Jesus was born, they still needed to consumate the marrige after his birth or else they wouldnt be considered as actually being married. The bible doesnt get into all that though, too much realism.

The Bible also tells us that Jesus had sisters, but they are not named or numbered (Matthew 13:56). In John 7:1-10, His brothers go on to the festival while Jesus stays behind. In Acts 1:14, His brothers and mother are described as praying with the disciples. Galatians 1:19

The current theory about the shroud of Turin is just as interesting as the original idea that it was the burial shroud of Jesus. It's now believed by some to be the burial shroud of the leader of the Knights Templar, Jaques DeMollet (I've absolutely butchered the spelling of his name, but I'm on my mobile and can't check the proper spelling). There was a really good documentary a few years ago that subjected the shroud to all kinds of tests, and the dating fits the Knights Templar connection, as do the wounds suffered by the image on the shroud.
