Years into the history of this machine, I finally bought it and came back to your review.
Distortion will never be a positive feature for me having grown up with analogue recording and in particular when it is a global effect but as you point out both here and in your comparison with the first Drumbrute, the sequencing is excellent and fun to use. It's already a classic IMHO

That's wild. For me the amazing distortion circuit is the selling point. Always on

Loving this review style. The video style is really good. You are very clear and concise with regards features and workflow. It seems to have a killer sequencer too. I've been looking for a drum machine to complement my Circuit and this just became a front runner for that!

Finally a review that's actually a review :D. So many other channels just post a demo and call it a review.
As far as drums synths go, I'll stick to my Audiothingies Doubledrummer (might also be nice to review on your channel). While going pure analog is appealing, analog drum synths like the drumbrute impact really need a few external effects to shine. I do have quite a few effects boxes, but those are used somewhere else in the signal chain (on other synths). That's why I went with a compact digital, though far from sterile, drum synth that integrates nicely with the rest of my set-up.

Great demonstration of the Drumbrute Impact. You have showcased it well. With MFB Tanzbar 2 and Behringer Rhythm Designer 808 due out this year I am going to wait and weigh up the options before taking the plunge. In the meantime I will still work with the original Drumbrute

  • @elmosexwhistle

The snare on this machine is very similar to one that I Synthesized in my DAW and use all the time, layered with acoustic drums (either real or sampled depending on the project). A little gated reverb and it sounds massive.
Therefore, I summize that this little drum machine will also layer very well with acoustic drums.

Love the analogue ringing, metallic hi hats and cymbal on the impact. The trick is to use the cymbal as the open or closed hi hat so you can alter the decay time on it.
It’s got a fantastic sequence on it and can you use it to control other midi drum sounds on other drum machines if you don’t like any of the built in sounds.

Great review BoBeats! I love how simple the layout is and functional. This is great for those who love hands on without a complicated workflow. The fill function is great for live performance. The distortion FX seems really fun too! Us sound designers also really appreciate the ability to tweak the individual sounds.
However, a bit controversial opinion of mine is that I feel the general sounds that this FM Drum produces are rather dull and uninspiring.

I really like the color effects. I wish the bigger drumbrute has the color effects. I do find the shared controls and lack of programmable automation is a bit disappointing, but it being analog I can't really complain about that. There's a lot of digital sample based solutions that have that, but albeit more complicated and less desirable from a workflow aspect.
As always thanks for a great video. Nice to see such positive vibes when a lot of people are negative trolls regarding the drumbrutes.

I think I like the original Drumbrute more. Nothing wrong with this machine, but I see more possibilities in character and sound for my music with the original machine. The Impact vaguely reminds me of the Tanzmaus with its kick and snares, so perhaps Arturia went more for a techno/house approach this time. Great overview of the machine, Bo!

  • @Decoy303

I think why you are stumped with the cowbell on this piece is because it's meant to be used as a starting sound that you then apply max global distortion to really shape that sound which in fact the only way to shape this sound on this piece. However I'm curious if you hooked the Drumbrute to this if you could apply it's filter effect on that cowbell.

I hear people say that the original drumbrute has more options but isn't as loud, while the impact is more loud, but has less options, and has the dreaded cowbell which is a bit of a letdown (can't be changed at all.) Hi Bo. Great review, thanks for the upload. I would like to buy an affordable drum machine which is capable (more or less) to do some Laserdance/Koto style (classic synth pop) drum/percussion patterns. After watching this video it seems for me this device can be a good option but It would be a big help if you could show even a very short example in a future video, just to be sure. I have no shops in my 150 km vicinity where I could try this or similar products before buying it so such yt videos are a real life saver for me (and I bet on that many guys out there have the very same reason to watch such quality reviews. Thanks. Oh and you’ve got +1 subscribed...

Joseph Wright , it’s a shame the cowbell is so weak, but on the other hand you can get cowbell-like sounds out of the FM drum, if you really need it.
Question is why they added the cowbell at all, and not an additional cymbal or some wacky signature sound.

Good demo. I like everything about it, but I can't Clap for it. ; - )

Not bad, not bad at all, but I still prefer the flexibility of my OG DB, the massive amount of voices and outputs makes it a good addition.
Don't like some of the sounds? Add FX or sequence a rompler drum machine with it, done.
Good demo Bo, but isn't the T-shirt a bit over the top :P ?

I just don't see the use of these Arturia drum machines if they don't provide kit memories. I would love to use something lik3 this live but there is no way I'm dialing in all the drum sounds for each of my songs or keeping them the same for every song.
Sure it would be fun to have in the studio and I suppose I could sample the sounds on my mpc, but that takes away a lot of the fun of using a analog machine live.

I got one of these. I returned it. It sounds like crap. No amount of bells and whistles can fix it. Sure, you could put it through fx to somewhat salvage the sound. But why would you want to do that?

I dig it, but the lack of individual outputs kills it for me. I'll stick with the OG.

It is great or rather WOULD be great, but sadly the sounds get boring pretty fast, color mode doesn't help a lot. Just selling mine

@@chakacohen I had mixed feelings until I ran the kick drum through reverb and then I fell in love.

(I'm finding that a deep instrument with a lot of menu diving doesn't work for me. An instrument that has everything you need on the surface is best for me even if there are obvious limitations. And on that basis, I have been enjoying the heck out of the Impact. I can't imagine affording a better drum machine.)

@cravensean thanks for replying. I ended up getting one and agree. It's a relief not to have to go through a single menu, especially when playing live. It's the only one I use now.

Wait, wasn't today supposed to be the day you expose a new synthesizer in a blue box? Hope the drumbrute impact isn't it and there's more to come.

No! The blue box was yesterday! The circuit update

  • @77advanced
    @77advanced 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

As always great usability, but weak clap, hats.. no pitch for hats and cymbals and overall limited sounds control. Still better sounding device than original drumbrute).
