Itachi Uchiha was a shinobi of Konohagakure's Uchiha clan that served as an Anbu Captain. He later became an international criminal after murdering his entire clan, sparing only his younger brother, Sasuke. He afterwards joined the international criminal organisation known as Akatsuki, whose activity brought him into frequent conflict with Konoha and its ninja - including Sasuke - who sought to avenge their clan by killing Itachi. Following his death, Itachi's motives were revealed to be more complicated than they seemed and that his actions were only ever in the interest of his brother and village, making him remain a loyal shinobi of Konohagakure to the very end.

I just learned that Itachi, because of the depression from killing his clan, would put himself in a genjutsu every night that would create a world where he didn't have to kill his clan. For example, the filler episode where he was making eggs for Sasuke.

No I’m not convinced ... Instead of ruining his own brother, very sadistically and murdering his own clan, Itachi should have assassinated the one who ordered the massacre of his clan. That would have been a lot cooler. He could have killed Danzo - he was perfectly capable in doing so BUT he chose not to, out of his will. Instead he murdered his own people.
He literally agreed with the plans of Danzo - a corrupt man and wanted to save an already flawed and corrupt system.
Although he 'saved' his brother he arguably in one way did worse than kill him - He basically tortured his brother psychologically and physically and have him life-long trauma. And he betrayed his own people ... Don't get me started on Obito 🙄

One of the most well writtened characters in anime. Even long after his death, he is still involved in the plot. What he was when he was alive is what sasuke is today, protecting konoha from the outside.

He done it to stop a civil war which would have undoubtedly destroyed the leaf and possibly the world because Naruto and Sasuke would not be strong enough or would not have gone through enough to save the world. Itachi saved Naruto with Shisui's eye he made him swallow. He saved Sasuke from Orichimaru. If he had just killed everyone and himself, Sasuke wouldn't have lived. He probably know what was going to happen as soon as he joined the Akatsuki and he put the plans in place to save the world. Put respect on Itachi's name. He wasn't the most important but he played a tremendous role in saving the world from Kaguya, Madara, Obito, Orichimaru, the whole Uchiha clan and Kabuto.

Itachi was truly a character with one of the best backstories. Even you as the viewer grow up hating itachi wondering why he would do such a thing. Only to find out he was always the good guy

Itachi would have been an amazing Sensei! The way he lectured Naruto was just awesome. No one including Jiraiya, Kakashi and Iruka were able to stop him from his decisions. If he sets his mind on something, he never gives up but Itachi was the one who made him realise that he's wrong in times.
He technically was the best sensei. If you count the way he made sasuke use hatred to grow powerful enough to defeat him. That’s literally all sasuke cared about and I don’t think he would’ve became as strong as he was without that. It was a bit unorthodoxed but Sasuke became just as powerful as Naruto just off his hatred for Itachi alone.
I imagine Itachi was so proud when Sasuke used Kirin on him and almost killed him with it. He was all like “now begone with the thunder clap” and Itachi was like “😟”

I remember when I first watched the series over a decade ago, I never understood why Itachi would kill his family like that and I sympathised with Sasuke when he wanted to seek justice for his family - but then discovering Itachi’s intentions and realising he was doing it to protect Sasuke all along was so heartbreaking. You can tell especially at the end just how much Itachi loved Sasuke.
He killed civilians because maybe they well became bad people
I love Itachi, he is one of my favorite characters; but all his decisions remind me of the fact that he is in fact still a child. On top of being surrounded by morons for leaders.

He was in an especially horrific catch 22 situation, either wipe out his clan/family or they launch a coup with a civil war on top. He subverted the clan's power hungry disposition in a shocking way.
For those who were wondering about important information given in the books:
Shisui was attacked not only by Danzo, but also by an aburame member who Danzo kept hidden and had the special jutsu of controlling bugs that cause paralysis. Hence why Shisui was not able to defend and protect his eye, also due to the paralysis not lasting forever, is the reason shisui was able to escape. During the massacre, Obito’s main job was to handle the police while Itachi handled everyone else, including his father’s friend that Itachi absolutely hated. (The only person besides Danzo and the aburame member to cause Itachi this level of hatred/anger) After the massacre, Itachi got his revenge for shisui by using his Amaterasu to burn the aburame member alive along with all of his bugs, which the member used in order to talk and stuff due to the member being mute. The book is very insightful about Itachi and how he lived and what he thought about during his time at the village. It also gives the best recollection of the events of the massacre, such as Itachi using Tsukuyomi to kill his girlfriend by giving her a genjutsu dream where she grew old and had kids with Itachi. The only person during the massacre to receive a “natural” death. Also, I can’t remember if it is ever explicitly stated, but from what I remember, Itachi knew the Obito was not Madara since there was no way Madara could be alive, but knew it was an Uchiha who had seemingly passed away during the last great ninja war. If given more time in the Anbu around Kakashi, Itachi could have figured out it was Obito.

I don’t think there was any logic that Masked Man/Tobi was Obito. The most generous versions have to excuse about 50 years, and Obito had to become a fully grown man while Kakashi was still a teenager. You can’t just make up spiral Zetsu as an excuse and then pull him out a year later for one episode…
I know it’s an anime but something about Itachi just touches you, his really wise and his quotes are really touching, it makes you feel like Itachi really exist and isn’t just some anime character, really idk how kishimoto does it but having a character making you feel that deep it’s speacial

I remember when I was a kid and shippuden was not a thing yet. I'd often fantasize scenarios where I'm in the naruto world. One of my frequent scenarios was always fighting itachi to stop the uchiha massacre. Looking back, it has become a very good lesson for me to not just see a problem from one direction but from all sides. Personally, if I were in the naruto verse and is in itachi's place. I'd definitely not join the coup but at the same time I wouldn't be able kill my entire clan and would probably leave the anbu and just let whatever will happen, happen. It'd definitely lead to a civil war where I'd fight for konoha but pull back my punches because I don't think I'd want to kill those that are close to me, though given the right circumstances I'd end up killing some. The uchihas would most probably lose and the name will be shunned by the people of konoha, which would begin my hatred for konoha. Still, I wouldn't be a criminal and kill innocent lives or would want to change konoha by starting a war or something like that. I'd just leave konoha and start a new life at some small unknown village or just live by myself somewhere in the middle of nowhere. I'd come up with a fake name and a fake backstory. As well as change my looks a bit, so people don't know who I am. Create a whole fake identity. Living a normal life, maybe fishing for a living or farming or maybe even start my own ramen stall. Anything that'll make me forget about my ninja past. I'd live like that until I die. People would not know what happened to me (my real identity) and just recognized the death of my fake identity.

I’ve never heard a story like Itachis in any movie or show ever. His character arc is so unique to me. It makes him special and that’s why he’s my favorite. Itachi is my favorite hero ever and Darth Vader is my favorite villain. It’s meaningful for Itachi to be in the same class as Vader when it comes to depth of character. Vader made it his goal to wipe out the Jedi because he wanted to save Padme and Itachi wiped out the Uchiha because he wanted to save Sasuke and the village.
Naruto was the first anime and show I watched because I saw it on a poster of itachi and my uncle introduced me to it and then I kept watching it and itachi was my favorite character even if I thought he was a bad guy and then when I learned he was a good guy I was overjoyed but I was sad when I learned his backstory and I gained respect for him and after that itachi became more special to me
He actually summed up his life in 48sec. You sir are incredible
When i found out about itachi’s true backstory i cried and was sad about how he let the blame on himself and lived his whole life with the hate
itachi is the strongest ninja most respected ninja in naruto
We all have characters that we like and dislike in Naruto but I'm sure we all adore Itachi :) the fact that everyone feel scared in Naruto whenever they come across Itachi tells a lot about him as a ninja I love him so much and I think the way he died isn't fair :'( I wanna see him go all force against Sasuke ..

Uchiha 🐐, prodigy, biggest sacrifice I've ever seen all for his little brother sasuke and for the sake of village. Watching his story again just breaks my heart 😭
