I hope you guys can tell that I'm truly excited about this lens, and I can see it being glued to many cameras because of its insane versatility. If there's anything I didn't cover, please feel free to ask away!
I also had a chance to use it and was nervous about the aperture range but MAN! This lens is so much more then the aperture makes you think. It’s hella fun to use and the aperture never got in the way. I think your review is spot on bro. Thanks for making this 🙌🏼
If we were working with a crop sensor then it may have been a bit of an issue, but since it's full frame, includes O.I.S and of course, amazing dual native ISO for video shooters, it genuinely hits the mark on so many levels! I'm legit super excited about this lens! Can't wait to hear your thoughts on it dude :)
The 24-105 is probably going to be better in almost every way except weight and size. The 24-105 is built to the standard of the higher end panasonic S lenses, has a constant aperture, and OIS. The 28-200 is like the 20-60 where it's a good enough, light, and relatively cheap lens.
It depends what you want from a lens. For me, the 28-105 f4 is a better lens for daily use, because its OiS and constant aperture. Yes, its bigger, but not so that it becomes a problem. This new lens is more like a good hiking lens for daylight use. For everything else not so much.
Lumix are prioritising size and portability, and I think its's a refreshing stance to have. Bringing a camera with you everywhere can sometimes be a bit cumbersome, but pairing this with the S5II makes an extremely capable package that won't break your back!
Ah man I'm hyped about this one! I love the direction Lumix decided to go in, and I can see this being a favourite for many :) Loved your take on the 28-200 as well 😁
@@TheRealRichardWong I bought the twin lens kit from Japan so I have the 20-60 and 50 1.8, but my most used focal length is the 85 and I’m getting good results with the canon one, I also adapted the crop sigma 30mm 1.4 art and pretty much have full frame coverage with just slight vignetting
I use the S5 for work, mainly with primes or the 24-105mm, but until now I still use my G9 for travel with the 14-140mm, which is an amazing lens, and hard to beat for flexibility, size and weight. This might be the lens that means I can ditch the G9 altogether - can’t wait to test it out.
I also love traveling with my 14-140mm, on the GX85. I got it used and scratched (fully disclosed), and grabbed it for only $200. I say it has personality, not damaged, because the flaring is unique 😂 Otherwise, can't tell the difference.
@@andersistbesserI think they are more concerned about having a do it all usable zoom range which can go wide and also zoom. The 24-105 is more probably the only alternative ,compared to say a 70-200 which may not be wide enough.
Great for landscapes especially - there's no longer much need for separate standard and telephoto lenses for that anymore. IQ is basically the same at f8-f11.
Love the versatility. I’ve usually got the Sigma 28-70 f/2.8 parked on my S5ii but this focal range plus reduced size…perfect for throwing it in a bag and taking on vacations.
I have ordered one - it's sold out currently, which is a good sign and it seems to be very popular. I am looking forward getting it and make my own experiences.
Looks like a kit lens for a new camera, they did the same when they released the 20-60mm a bit before the S5… hopefully this means the new S1’s are around the corner
What do you think? If you are on the budget, and you already got mc11 adapter. Why don’t you try canon ef-s 10-18mm which equivalent to 15-27mm similar to 14-28 and canon ef-s 18-135mm will equivalent to 27-202mm which similarly to 28-200. And both lens would cost you just about 200-300bucks for both lens. And video auto focus work on both FHD and 4K. I understand that quality might be a bit different. But a huge saving on that.
Lens looks incredible, with this release I wish to jump into pany FF cameras, the only missing thing is compact FF high-res camera from pany. I hope pany will do Lumix SX compact rangefinder body as A7CR competitor.
This is more exiting then the spec list suggests, and your reaction reflects that! I had the Olympus 12-100mm pro and this lens reminds me of it. Combined weight of lens and body is similar when paired (em1iii 12-100mm and s5ii 28-200mm) Very temped to switch systems because of this release
Really looking forward to the 28-200mm but for some reason Panasonic has gone silent about it and I can't find anywhere with it or any impending date. Wish they'd give us some more info.
This lens is really making me question my recent G9ii purchase. The 14-140 is my most used m4/3 lens. I would have been tempted to get an S5ii and 28-200 instead. Throw in a couple of the f1.8 primes for a lightweight and capable kit. The OCD me really likes the constant look of the recent S lenses, and the same filter size would be so convenient.
Wish this lens existed a few months back when I went out to Sri Lanka; I took the 24-105mm with me but this would have been just that bit nicer for some of the wildlife shots; great to see Lumix growing the lens lineup, hopefully I'll have another reason to consider this lens soon.
This is fantastic news! Considering that you're getting nearly 8x zoom in this lens, the price seems very reasonable to me. If I owned it, it would make choosing between my 24-105mm f/4 and this very difficult.
The aperture 7.1 and the missing zoom-lock is just keeping out of buying this lens. Like to go hiking and want to bring a nice zoom but hanging my camera on my backpack strap will have the lens fully extended all the time. And 4.0 isn’t gonna cut it for star photography
I've owned superzooms in the past, and didn't find myself using them for photography as much as I thought. However for video this is closer to camcorder lens range, which still has a use, with far better high ISO performance. Max aperture is always a compromise. Make it brighter and no one will use it as a carry round lens.
OIS and the size makes it a very nice option. I have a Nikon F mount 28-300 but that thing on a dSLR is huge. I would have liked to see it more like f4-f5.6 but I guess keeping that small casing does give them some pretty strict constraints. I'll definitely be waiting for it to be used though... $1000 is too much.
Amazing lens. Now, for this use i think gh6+ oly 12-100 f4 is better, add a small laowa 7.5 or 10mm and the kit is perfect. The reason is that if you need that kind of lens, you are on the move, shooting handheld, probably a lot of movement.... And mft sensors have less rolling shutter.
I do get that with the compression f7.1 doesn’t feel like f7.1… but I’ve never been a fan of variable aperture lenses. I’d rather not be limited. Though for the price, you’re right, it’s fair. I’d happily pay more so I’ll just keep saving for the 70-200 I guess 😅🫠🫠 great video though Josh!
@@harryvlogs7833 That's you. But if you study a lot of landscape photography. The use f8 and above so eveything is in focus. And when they need more light. They reduce their shutter speed and use a tripod to take their images.

Hi Great review I think the 70-300 which with the kit lens 20-60 is already the best combo you can get for +- the same price and with 100mm more range...
Great lens and looks as useful as my 14-140 on my Lumix G8, which is my travel/holiday camera at the moment, but that could change if I got this for my S5 II. Love the videos and great choice of watch too... I'm also a big Christopher Ward fan 😃
I am just glad to hear that Panasonic hasn't abandoned lens-based stabilization. While this lens isn't for me, I do think it is going to get a lot of love from the general population.
I can see two lenses being in my 'take most of the time kit'. The 14-28 (which I already own) and this new 28-200. You can cover a great range with those two which is probably one reason why this new lens starts at 28 for crossover (and of course you can cover from 21-300 in APS-C mode with those two lenses). The only other lens I'd probably want is a prime like the 50mm 1.8 just in case I need some extra bokeh on certain subjects like a portrait shot or an interview set up.
This is definitely the idea I had too! Those two lenses will cover pretty much everything you could ever need in terms of focal range, and both being as compact as they are, it really wouldn't be hassle to keep them both in the bag at all times :)
@@JoshCameron absolutely. These two lenses cover everything in a broad term and you can get a few other lenses that you need for specialised needs over these. Yes they aren't super fast lenses or have a constant aperture of even F4 but then if they were the price point would make them unattainable for most people (which isn't what Panasonic is aiming for) and the quality of them is still very good for most professional work (certainly for anyone shopping for an S5II). This is certainly a lens I will be looking at getting.
Awesome news. This lens looks perfect for what I’m wanting, and I’m glad Panasonic has delivered the quality. The aperture doesn’t phase me, small portable size with great IQ are more important in this type of lens, especially with the S5’s awesome ISO capability
Would you buy this over the Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN? I'll also be getting a prime lens, so I can take portraits or heavy bokeh shots. One zoom and one prime to start with.
I love zoomlenses with crazy reach and this one seems to fit the bill. Still think the 24-105 is in a different league with the constant F4. The 28-200 is a great outdoor lens, for sure.
I'm torn between both of them, Should I keep my 24-105mm? I have the 70-300mm as well. Should I sell both of them and just get the 28-200mm? I'm heavy about portability, compactness and lightweight. Just wanna get an opinion
@@AKhairaddin I'm not sure how much of a loss 4mm is at the wide end. At the long end, you can get that 1.6 x going Super35. It's not as long but good reach for most situations. Ideally, you should try it on loan or rent it and see how it works for you. It's a very personal choice based on the stuff you shoot.
Great review Josh. The variable aperture on all the Lumix L mount zooms makes them unlovable for video. Good value for money though, if that doesn't matter.
I think they have well and truly hit the back of the net with this lens in the Panasonic lineup. Here's a curveball question, does it say anywhere if the teleconverter can be also attached to this lens?
Was just about ready to pull the trigger on the Sigma 28-70 f2.8, but this really got me thinking if I should sacrifice the wider aperture for more zoom range...
What would you use instead? I’m both outdoor and indoor ( soccer and basketball) and want to grab the lens that makes the most sense. My kids are small but I want to be able to grow into the lens as they grow into sports.
This is a fun lens indeed, however saying the lens is sharp all the way through its focal range is a bit exaggerated. After testing two samples, the lens has good sharpness from 28 to 40mm wide open, but everything higher need to be stopped down to at least 1 stop to get good sharpness. The good point is the lens become very sharp when stopped down, I was surprised by the sharpness at 200mm f9. Some lenses never get good sharpness even when stopped down. Another good point is about color, the colors from this lens are really good, even nicer than the 24-70mm S Pro in my opinion. Overall I think the lens is really nice but a bit overpriced, the right price should be more around 600-700€ than 1000€.
HI, JOSH .. love from Bangladesh...like the works of yours.. but I need a help I got an issue with my Panasonic S5 IIx. Brought it from Japan in november 2023. When I take a picture it turns out completely pitch black i tried every format like raw and jpeg also changed everything including iso ,shutter speed and exposure . also try it with card format and camera reset. But there is no hope. but there is no issue with the video, it is working fine as it was. I live in Bangladesh . There is no lumix support center. so i don't have any idea what to do...
the sony rx10iv has better image quality than full frame cameras with approx 24-200mm zoom lens attached. has this lens managed to break that barrier and actually bring increased image quality?
The aperture could definitely have been a bit smaller, but I guess with the constraints of the size I can kind of understand. it also doesn’t kill the 70 to 200 which is something I was considering. If it had been a lower aperture, I might’ve skipped on the 70-200 but now I might have to get both 😂🙈
Beautiful video footage. You made me confident that despite it's low aperture it can deliever stunning results nonetheless, particularly in low-light shooting. You shot at night with a 7.1 aperture you mad-man, you'll have the reddit people practically foaming at their mouths for that! Thanks for this
Hahaha! It's doable - I think people get too hung up on Aperture to be honest. If you want blurry backgrounds then of course it has a massive role to play, but if it's just a case of balancing light, then these modern cameras can truly surprise you with their higher ISO performance :) Thanks for watching !
I beg to differ. Convenience comes at a price and image quality _will_ take a hit. There is no getting around it. But I love my 20-60 which is on my S1 most of the time. When I need extra reach I take my Canon 70-200 f4 IS with me. Together they are a killer combo.
If the 20-60 had a baby with the 70-300 😂 The lens looks absolutely perfect for travel! Lumix look to be making some really good versatile lenses for the full frame system. This is somewhat close to the Lumix 14-140mm MFT which is one of the most versatile lenses for that sensor.
The craziest part for me is how small it is! MFT is awesome for being lightweight and portable, but it's very rare to see FF setups adopting that same philosophy! Hope you're well dude, always a pleasure to hear from you :)
What would you recommend instead for a single travel/content creator lens? I have 20-60, 50mm and a Tamron 90mm macro. I find it too time consuming to switch lenses on vacations. I also feel like I’m lacking depth of field in the 20-35mm focal length. I’m thinking sigma 16-28mm. But then I’m missing a good 35mm option. Also with the 1.5x crop in video I always find I’m shooting around the 50mm focal length unintentionally 🤔
Josh, I love your L mount content. Thank you for that! Question: what standard zoom lens would you bring for your Panasonic s5 if you had to film an event and could only bring one lens? (Needs to be a bit cinematic)
This was such a great video, the best ive seen on this lens yet. I am considering this lens for wedding videography, specifically ceremonies. I need something tighter than my 24-70 and im stuck between this and the 70-200 f4 (dont have the bidget for the 2.8 at the moment). Do you think the aperture range would hold me back at all? I would really appreciate your insight!!
Thank you for the kind words, happy to hear you found this video helpful! I use the 70-200 F4 S Pro as my telephoto and it's great, but it's big and heavy so therefore stays at home unless I really need it. The 28-200 however is always in my bag, because it's that much lighter and smaller. I haven't found the aperture hold me back much at all to be honest - these cameras can shoot clean at ISO 4000 so really it's no big issue! The compression at 200mm will also give you some falloff between the subject and the background too. The 70-200 F4 S Pro is of course the optically superior lens, but at the cost of the weight and size. Hope this helps!
Yeah, this is a lovely travel lens, but bit of a downer.. I was hoping for something similar to Tamron 28-200 f/2.8-5.6 which is also reasonably light and faster at both ends. Lumix needs to get some lenses that are extraordinary, and improved from the lenses we've seen in the past. This Lumix 28-200 seems a decent enough travel lens, but not much more than that
Love your videos, well done as always...but am I the only one disappointed with this announcement? Tamron showed what can be done with a 28-200: fast(ish) with stellar IQ. I guess I was thinking they'd do something to match that. Maybe I was wrong to think that, but I know plenty of people who moved to Sony specifically because of the Tamron 28-200 which could literally be the only lens you need. This isn't even close in my opinion. No one is switching systems for 4-7.1. I'd give up 3/4 of an inch of compactness for something that's usable indoors. Not to mention this is more expensive than the Tamron! Big miss in my book.
I hope you guys can tell that I'm truly excited about this lens, and I can see it being glued to many cameras because of its insane versatility. If there's anything I didn't cover, please feel free to ask away!

@@JoshCameron OK... thinking about it more... Quick question, 24-150 f4 or 28-200?
With this is out of the way can we finally start getting some faster pro lenses now from Lumix?
What kind of focal range and how fast? I mean they make all those f1.8 primes...
Awesome news. This lens looks perfect for what I’m wanting, and I’m glad Panasonic has delivered the quality. The aperture doesn’t phase me, small portable size with great IQ are more important in this type of lens, especially with the S5’s awesome ISO capability
Meanwhile I got this lens and have some experience. It is indeed a very nice lens with great flexibility and solid image quality. I can recommend it.
Would you buy this over the Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN? I'll also be getting a prime lens, so I can take portraits or heavy bokeh shots. One zoom and one prime to start with.
Is it weather sealed?
Wow on the high aperture, that's a dealbreaker.
Perfect hiking lens and exactly what I've been waiting for. Thanks for the video! One question remains, is it weatherproof?
Great stuff
I think they have well and truly hit the back of the net with this lens in the Panasonic lineup. Here's a curveball question, does it say anywhere if the teleconverter can be also attached to this lens?
The catch is the F-stop?
Was just about ready to pull the trigger on the Sigma 28-70 f2.8, but this really got me thinking if I should sacrifice the wider aperture for more zoom range...
buy all
Should I ditch the 24 - 105 for it?
I shoot a lot of indoor sports along with theater and dance. The super zoom range is great, but the poor aperture is absolutely a "No".
What would you use instead? I’m both outdoor and indoor ( soccer and basketball) and want to grab the lens that makes the most sense. My kids are small but I want to be able to grow into the lens as they grow into sports.
I seen rumours about Samyang possibly doing a 35 - 150mm f2 however not sure how accurate this is.....have you hesrd anything?
In m43 third camera we have the lumix 14-140mm so I know why you’re happy
if i had the 28-70 sigma art II and the 50mm 1.8, what you recomend me as a 3rd lens, this one or the Panasonic LUMIX S PRO 70-300 mm?
It's a great lens. But i would love to see how it competes with the 24-105 f4
Thank you for the review. What do you think about using it with a 47MP sensor?
I notice focus breeding in evening. And 200mm the AF not work.
HI, JOSH .. love from Bangladesh...like the works of yours.. but I need a help I got an issue with my Panasonic S5 IIx.
If it had been a lower aperture, I might’ve skipped on the 70-200 but now I might have to get both 😂🙈
Both sounds good 🤣 I guarantee you'll bring the 28-200 out with you more though!
Hello, is it worth replacing the Sigma 28-70 2.8 with this lens? Is the image quality as good as on the Sigma?
How about compares to Tamron 28-200mm F2.8-5.6 A071?
I beg to differ. Convenience comes at a price and image quality _will_ take a hit. There is no getting around it. But I love my 20-60 which is on my S1 most of the time. When I need extra reach I take my Canon 70-200 f4 IS with me. Together they are a killer combo.
Do you think this could be a suitable replacement for the 24-105 if pairing with the 18 and 50 in my kit? Thoughts?
Not able yet to buy the lens local, are you able possible do short low light test video?
Wish the 35-150 f2-2.8 will be available for L mount
I wonder if they were able to get this lens so compact by using the same new tech found in the new Lumix 100mm f/2.8 macro.
@@JoshCameron I think of all brands, Lumix have the power to make compact FF zoom lenses 🙌🏽 all good man thank you 🙌🏽
What would you recommend instead for a single travel/content creator lens? I have 20-60, 50mm and a Tamron 90mm macro. I find it too time consuming to switch lenses on vacations. I also feel like I’m lacking depth of field in the 20-35mm focal length. I’m thinking sigma 16-28mm. But then I’m missing a good 35mm option. Also with the 1.5x crop in video I always find I’m shooting around the 50mm focal length unintentionally 🤔
id suggest a 24mm 1.8. wide enough also if you want to vlog, then you can crop 1.5x = 35mm
Sheesh! I thought it was click bait till I watched :D Amazing getting this video out here so soon. Great work.
It's not clickbait I promise 🤣More of an over-arching theme, if you will... Thanks for the kind words mate :)
I only have the S5 and not the S5ii- would you say the S5ii is a bit of a must for this and the new 100mm macro?
Josh, I love your L mount content. Thank you for that! Question: what standard zoom lens would you bring for your Panasonic s5 if you had to film an event and could only bring one lens? (Needs to be a bit cinematic)
28-200 or 70-300? What do you recommend?
Hi mate can you tell me maximum aperture will change as you zoom what are values please?
Which ND filter would you recommend to use with this setup?
When will this lens be available to buy in the US. ?
Have been trying to find it for last 4 months.
I'm not actually too sure as I'm not in contact regularly with the US team. It should have been readily available a while back surely?
You don’t have to resort to engagement baiting
I believe in you to make actual content 👍
