@@soumyajeet7809 Hetfield alternate picks more than you think. What makes his rhythms tight is he down picks the eighth notes and all chords. An open e is an open e a single note g is a single note g. Doesn't matter which direction you pick on any single note. Chords the direction you pick makes a world of difference. Mustaine alternate picks and his rhythms are just as tight as James' rhythms. Also have you considered where you pick the string. Dude! Same! 28 now started down picking when I got my first legit electric which was the LTD KH-202. Fast-forward 10+ years and I finally got a Hetfield signature!
One thing I noticed with your video, as much as I like the tone, I think part of not being able to tell a difference in power chords vs just the open E is that you have way too much gain/bass, whichever one it is. From what I've found, they use relatively low gain amps with a tube screamer in front. Like the producers notes on Master Of Puppets puts the gain at only 3.
I'd have to disagree on the most notable tremolo picking example at 9:47 - Disposable Heroes is 8 minutes of James showing the world how much their speed and stamina suck on a guitar. Absolute hell to get through that one, even my bachelor arm had problems! That song epitomizes tremolo in my humble opinion.

Playing with your guitar slung down to your knees like James Hetfield does takes a little practice and a little more getting used to. I eventually learned to do it, but it took some time. James also has an advantage because he’s 6’1” or so and has long arms. A good rule of thumb is to set your guitar strap so that the string closest to the ground is just above the bottom of your strumming hand when that arm is fully extended.
On the topic of downpicking. I think my teenage years of playing Green Day songs all down picking was a good start before tackling Hetfield in my late teens. (And revisiting now nearly 30 years old)
Cool vid Robert, I've been listening to Metallica since the 80's and as predominantly a rhythm guitarist Hetfield is my single biggest influence. Very few guitarists can match his right hand when it comes to down-picking.
Fast alternate picking on the same string is probably the best description of it. Listen to the last half of Metallica’s “One”, which sounds like a machine gun (which, for that song especially, it’s supposed to). The rhythm guitar parts of the entire second half of that song are all loaded with tremolo picking.
Hello there Robert , I have asked a few questions over the past year, and just like you mentioned and have mentioned many times before that JAMES HEFIELD is your favorite player, what do you think about his counterpart Kirk Hammett, do you think if Metallica had kept Dave Mustaine they would be a different(kept playing thrash) or do you think Kirk was the better fit ? And who do you think is the better lead player Mustaine or Hammett, and rhythm wise in your opinon who's better Mustaine or Hetfield . I too have my favorites but being that you appear to be a big (long time) Metallica fan , I'm just asking your opinon no arguments here. Thanks love your channel keep up the great work.
I remember you! I’m a Kirk Hammett fan, as well. He’s a phenomenal guitar player. I honestly don’t know why he gets the flak that he does. Most people can’t play what he does. I’ve challenged many people who disagree with me to learn just one half of the Ride The Lightning album note-for-note. Nobody’s done it yet. I also love Dave Mustaine and Megadeth. Metallica have continued to play thrash even without him (Hardwired...To Self-Destruct is about as thrash as it gets), but Mustaine wrote so much of their early stuff that I think it definitely would have come out differently had they kept him. I think as far as who’s the better lead player between Kirk and Dave, it’s neck-and-neck. Their both really talented. James has said himself, however, that Dave Mustaine is the best rhythm player in the world, but I still tend to give James the edge on that, even if it’s out of bias.
Glad you enjoyed it! I don’t know that it’s going to turn into a new series, just something I thought would be a fun video. You can't!
Huh?
@@RobertWJackson No one can play like Hetfield, the title of the video really does have an answer and Robert you being a James Hetfield fan you know this (like you elude to in your vid) You Can't! Hetfields playing is so special.....and the real amazing thing is he can play that tight and sing too.....unreal! James can say what he wants Mustaine is cool but, James Hetfield is the best rhythm player in music...let's go over some of the players shall we? Izzy Stradlin, Malcom Young, Mick Cripps, Paul Stanley, King/Hanneman---yeah I think I've made a point James Hetfield is also one of the best lyricist on this planet as well........so the answer to the title of this video is You Can't but, damn it's fun to just fricking chug down picking like he does Haaaaaaaaa!!!!!!

@@RobertWJackson Oh one more thing I'm gonna be doing a guitar build soon so I commented on the Montreux pickups video ( Wizz pickups) and he commented back to me saying May 1st they'll have them back in stock....those are the pickups in those $30,000 59' clones so I figured I'd let you know! Oh and those pickups are ridiculous expensive $750 a pickup crazy huh?
Maybe I don’t wanna play guitar like James Hetfield...or Kirk Hammet for that matter! ;p just kiddin...but not really
🤷🏻♂️
Can't anyway so it's not a decision you're making one way or the other.
You can't
That's what said verbatim! When did you find Metallica? Because your a real fan!
Sorry, but learnt nothing new. And, try using the bridge pickup, instead of the neck, for rhythms?
Learn this: how many guitar players does it take to change a light bulb?
Just one. But it takes 100 others to say that they could have done it better
Kind of like your comment above just did. SMH...
@@RobertWJackson who plays the master of Puppets (or any metal rhythm) on the neck pickup??? Really? The neck pickup is for cleans and creamy moody solos... Didn't you notice which pickup Hetfield uses in which situations. It just sounds very muddy playing rhythm on the neck pickup.
Of course I notice such things. Tell me genius, what makes you think I'm playing on the neck pickup?
Is your guitar out of tune?
Yea he sounds down tuned to me too
Hmmm!
You're tone is really bad. Playing is good...the tone is like muffled and muddy...is it the amp? too much gain or crap pickups?
