I agree they were unfair to Lavinia and Mathew should have been honest with her about still loving Mary. I also agree that Mary's obvious affection for Mathew probably was irritating to Richard and her being wishy washy wasn't right. HOWEVER, that does not excuse or justify Richard's pushy and manipulative tactics to shove Mary into Marriage. If he truly loved her he wouldn't have tried to repeatedly blackmail her and hold his "favor" to her over her head!
Melissa Forkner Lesher : I question the sincerity of his “love.” I have loved people who were unwilling or unable to return my feelings. I was hurt and disappointed, of course, but... I still love them and I genuinely wish them happiness and prosperity. Genuine love is simply incapable of selfishness. I have also been in a relationship where the love was very uneven (though I didn’t realize it). I genuinely loved and appreciated the man, but there were multiple incompatibilities that kept me from really bonding with him in a deep, passionate way. He felt my lack of involvement and was very hurt and angry. Meanwhile I was confused by his anger/hurt because I really was giving him the best I could.
To me, he had all the markers of a potential abuser. Controlling, manipulative, eager to 'punish' at the first sign of being crossed, and the way he sometimes physically forceful. Mary could have easily ended up being beaten by his guy, or at least emotionally and mentally abused.

Your opinion. But to me Sir Richard was horrible but Lavinia was a sweetheart and Mary was nice to her even tho she still loved Matthew
It's not love if you manipulate the person into compliance for power disguised as affection.
He was a complete jerk, yet I still liked him.
He was awesome in Tomb Raiders with Lara Croft.
Detestable man. I don't think he loved her, at all.
Rebekah Martin: I think he loved her, but not in a healthy way. It was very one-sided.
He loved her, but her constant rejection made him ugly.
He was only after a title.
To me, he had all the markers of a potential abuser. Controlling, manipulative, eager to 'punish' at the first sign of being crossed, and the way he sometimes physically forceful. Mary could have easily ended up being beaten by his guy, or at least emotionally and mentally abused.
Do you know Sir Richard Carlisle aka Ser Jorah Mormont aka Khallesi Danarys Stormborn Mother of Dragons Queen of the Andals Heir to the Iron Throne Breaker of Chains bodyguard?
Actually, his kind of proposal would've been the only one, I'd say yes to.
I’m a romantic at heart admittedly, but I would have said yes to Sir Richard as well!
That should be ‘Sir Richard Carlisle’
That should be 'Batman'
No ser for you.
Es un classic, always, thanks. 😎📺💵💵💎
Sean bean destiny is to meet his end early in every series and iain glenn's is unrequited love of younger women I guess.
Ah Sir Friendzone.
Does anyone else feel like they can't hate Carlisle just because they're so used to seeing him as Jorah? I love him as Ser Jorah so much that I couldn't see him as anything else even if I tried
Yes, same!!!
Sir Richard, Jorah, whoever he is, he is president of the friendzone. I would have said mayor, but that job was gifted to Ross Geller long ago.
He is the same age as Sir Anthony (and Robert). Yet they had no problem with him.
Amen
Probably bc he was rich and Mary needed to be married.
Feblik probably by a few years. Sir Richard could be Mary’s father lol
Feblik lol. The only reason why I liked him a little but was bc he was Ian Glen but I must say he doesn’t look extremely old but compared to all the other younger men in the show he does look quiet old lol. But he isn’t bad looking
