Hey just to clarify, the main girl (Saebyeok) isn't the ex-girlfriend of the thug (Deoksu). He was just her former boss.
And her parents didn't abandon her. Her and her younger brother managed to escape from North Korea and she's trying to get money to fund her parent's escape.
Finally, yes it was completely up to the participants whether they want to return to the game or not after leaving the game due to the initial vote.

Her dad isent in north korea he died
Seobyeok (Dawn)'s family trying to escaped to China via crossing a river. Her dad was shot while crossing the river and later found dead on a riverbed. Her and her brother escaped China then to South Korea. Her Mom's whereabout is unknown.

That badass woman is a North Korean defector, and she's trying to get money to get her parents (still back in North Korea) to cross the border and bring them to South Korea (there are illegal businesses that help North Korean defectors escape)

I also love Sae Byoek, when i met her i instantely liked her, don't know why, even tho she is a little cold and doesn't show a lot of feelings 😅
I think it's the deep sadness and hopelessness in her eyes that draw viewers to her character. You immediately feel a mood with her, which is why I applaud her acting debut so much because she was able to portray that flawlessly.
she's not evil. She hasn't done anything that would make her evil.

I like how the people who made that show did not spare any effort to make this world believable. It's never dumb, it's never lazy, it's never boring... if only every movie maker were that motivated
I dunno if I'd say all of these characters are greedy. Some of them are for sure, but for others it's like calling a starving person a glutton.
Ali was cheated out of salary by his boss, and he had a family to support. The characters all had debts for a myriad of reasons, and they came from different economic and societal classes.
Most of them are not greedy,. For example The protagonist, they are just desesperated. People who believe they are just greedy..maybe they have never feel that level of anxiety and desperation...is not really about The money, is about what money could bring to them...a solution and a chance to be better parent, health, bring their family togheter.
Amazing show. Every single character has a story, and the plot twists are insane. Such a good show. At 9:46, Saebyuk's parents did not leave their kids....they all tried to escape to South Korea (for very obvious reasons) and the father got shot, and the mother got caught in China. She's trying to find out what happened by paying up the guy she threw coffee at, and trying to get her parents over to SK.

plus, forign worker character (Ali?) he can’t sue his boss for not giving money cus him and his wife is an illgal immigrant.
Like south koreans did before few decades ago(many koreans went to USA to earn more money back then), poor people from poor countries immigrate to countries illigaly so that they can earn much more.
Like this drama, there are some bosses who use their weakness and delay their salary on purpose.
If Ali and his co-workers sued his boss for ungiven money, they would have been kicked out of korea immidiately…
Donno how much exactly they can earn more, I heard that it would be at least x5 more. (So that’s why many illigal immigrant workers are willing to go to “richer” countries depite of the high risk of getting reported to police or ripped off to evil bosses)
The soundtrack is phenomenal
I just wanted to say that in Korea it’s common to live with your parents. Many families live together all their lives so there’s nothing wrong with living with your parents…it’s not considered a bad thing or a fault. Houses and apartments are very expensive in Korea and many also can’t afford to live on their own….and that includes the parents as well as the adult children. Family is very important and adult children will live with parents to help take care of them. So even though the main character has many problems with his gambling and money….living with his mom isn’t considered a problem….taking money from her is…but living with her isn’t.
Ya, It's actually very common for Asian live with parents.

In Korea, it really isnt THAT common. I think it’s more common in China or the Greater Chinese region, but in Korea, I think most people live alone if they get a job and family.
As a person who is living in Korea, I agree it is quite common to live with their parents normally until settling down to new family life. After marriage, we usually try ro live on our own. But still a few couples live with their parents for many reasons(for taking care of their ill parents or for financial reason..etc) and that's not considered as incompetence.
In my country (central Europe) its common too. My parents house is big so i live in first floor with my partner and our newborn child and my parents with my younger sister in second floor. There is also big inflation right now. (because of war on ukraine) Its not easy even though we live together..
SPOILER:
Several of the characters' deaths are foreshadowed here:
Sang-woo: He's shown attempting suicide in his bathroom with burning charcoal (unfortunately all-too common in Korea nowadays.). He winds u dying by his own hand.
Sae-byeok: She threatens the broker with a knife to his throat, and she dies by having her throat slashed.
Ali: betrayed by someone he puts his trust into (his boss at the factory, and his "hyeong", Sang-woo).
Deok-su: Leaps from the bridge to escape death, but falls to his death at the end.
And that's exactly why I'll never understand people saying that ep2 is bad. Besides it being absolutely phenomenal in showing exactly why everyone comes back, it really does foreshadow well.

Anyone noticed that there were foreshadowing on how the characters would die in this episode? The bad guy with the snake tattoo fell out of the bridge to escape his rival gang and he died in the game falling out of a bridge, Ali betrayed and killed his boss and he also got betrayed and died, Sang-Woo layed down in the bath tub and he also died laying down, Sae-byeok pointed a knife to the neck to the guy whom she paid to get her mother out of NK and she died by a knife stab to her neck, Gi-Hun swore his mother that he wont attack Sae-byeok in the scene where they got released after the voting, and his mother died.

@@tapitapi4524 Obviously a lot of people that are watching reaction videos watch these types of videos to see other peoples reaction to a series/movie, not to watch the whole series, theres cuts to these reactions to avoid copyright...

9:35 err... bro. you didn't get it, man. she must be a north korean who has escaped from the dictator's iron grip. her whole family must've tried and only she and her younger brother must've made it. since north korea is sharing its boarder with china, people can cross it to sell vegetables and gadgets and stuffs. but sometimes, they don't return to north korea and just stay in china and then move to thailand or viet nam, mongo, etc, and from there, they make their run into the south korean embassy, where they can be saved. that's how they escape north korea, usually.
in her case, she's with this broker, who asks for a lot of money for bringing their parents out from either north korea or china or wherever they are. if they get caught in china, chinese governemtn will simply send them back to the good old north korea, where they will probably get tortured for betraying the motherland. so, the broker is putting his neck on it as well, each time he makes his journey toward north korea-china boarder. he, himself could get caught and dragged to north korea for some good, quality time, you know. most brokers are north korean. south korean wouldn't risk his life and they don't even speak north korean korean. it's like ... usa english and british english. pretty much the same, but you can still tell the difference.
there are about 30 , 000 people who's managed to escape from north korea and north korean government want them back, but south korean government just ignores that request cause they'll surely be tortured and forced to work in cold coal mine or etc for like 10 years. sometimes they get executed in public to set an example. it really depends on dear leader's mood of the day, i guess

It’s it necessarily that these characters are greedy (well some definitely are) but they’re desperate for the money. Either because their lives or their families lives depend on it somehow. But money can turn good people bad…

The girls name Seobyeok literally means Dawn as in when sun rise. Not sure how far you're in but you can call her Dawn

why would you call her something that isn't her name? it makes as much sense as if a Spanish speaker said "her name is Alba in Spanish, so you can just call her that."
@@mischr13 True...why doesn't translation or dubbing say older brother (oppa/hyung) or older sister (nuna or unni)? Instead all the translation just say the character's name instead. Why not say character's name in Korean manner, last name first, then their name instead of flipping it around for western European culture. Lots of things that doesn't make sense.
But slowly but surely one day world'll get there.
This show reminds me a bit of danganronpa. If you have not I recommend you play the danganronpa games.

Rewatching the episode it's so clever how every character death was foreshadowed in this : sae byeok menaced her boss with a knife on his throat, she died being stabbed in the throat ; sang woo was about to kill himself in his bathtub, he died by killing himself in the fight against his brother ; Ali tricked his boss and ran away with the money, He died being tricked by sangwoo during the marbles game, the guy with the tattoo whose name I forgot jumped over a bridge, He died in the glass bridge episode

Her parents didn’t leave her she’s from North Korea and judging from what I’ve heard about North Korea her parents are probably dead or prison but she doesn’t know I guess ☹️ because if you try to escape and get caught you face serious consequences and if you escape successfully (like she has) then your family face the consequences for you.
