    I hope you enjoy my latest recording - this time of a rather droll story from 1951. You can listen to more Ghost (and Horror) Stories for Christmas on the playlist: th-cam.com/play/PL7JYpOrSDoCdOa4uUF8OMcBHxVfP-hpef.html

    Fantastic story, loved the twist at the end! This reminds me of a short story called The Tsantsa, from a horror anthology published by either Penguin or Puffin in the 80s... I shall have to dig out my collection 😁😁😁

    Oh good story! I love Spider stories & in fact as the tale neared its end, i quite believed the old Policeman Plod would suddenly turn into a great arachnid, grab the unfortunate chap & bundle him up in a cocoon & as fast as his 8 legs would carry him, flee back to the mad old man to let him have his head while the Copper munched down on the body!!!🕷
    A tad grusome, but still a terror for those with arachnophobia!
    Thank you Mr Strange
    Regards

      Now *that* would have been a tale of the unexpected 😂. Actually if PC Plod was revealed to be colluding with the blind chap in the old headshrinking business that would have been a twist.

      Hahaha, yeah my girl’s just like you. For some reason I can handle spiders, but I had insects. Something about how mechanical and robotic they are. You probably subconsciously don’t like how soft they are and that they’re like a hand. That kinda humanizes them for me.
      That said, no one wants to play with a black widow or a brown recluse (we have them in the states if your a Limey).
      Cheers!

    • @EnCryptedHorror
      @EnCryptedHorror  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wondered if it was just the author drawing the parallel between the man and his guest as spider and fly (with most spiders being nearly blind despite the excess eyes 😄). Then again, I thought his torture with the Peruvian tribe and the ensuing blindness had sent him mad. Or it just added a layer of creepiness.

    Omigoodness, Jasper! I've just woken up and seen this.......that means I'll have to use all my willpower to wait till tonight. But it won't be too much of a hardship, because I've got a busy day. I'll be up to my eyes drinking tea, eating biscuits and reading my new book "The Gallows Pole". See you later, Hil xx I love you to the kettle and back x

      @@EnCryptedHorror It's good, but not an easy read, ( for me, I mean) big chunks are in dialect, so I have to read those bits twice. But then, I am getting on, lol, more difficult to flex your brain! But it's worth the effort, there's only been one book I couldn't finish, that's The Blood Doctor, by Ruth Rendell, writing as Barbara Vine, I think I tried 3 times and never got past half way. And it had a family tree on the fly page.......never a good sign! See you soon x

    • @EnCryptedHorror
      @EnCryptedHorror  ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha! I think he was blind. Spiders are mostly (virtually) blind apparently so the host was the spider to the wayfarer's fly...was how I took it. Other than that a droll observation that a man who has fought in WW2 and survived all manner of tropical perils should still find a tiny spider the most horrifying thing in the world 😆

    Brava! So lovely, cozy and chilly all about! I especially enjoyed the nuance of the plot twist: (SPOILER ALERT 🚨)
    I’m not familiar with F. McDermott, but this is especially clever for the fact no pseudoscientific reason is given, for why our protagonist overcame the strong paralytic drug, due to phobia. Our protagonist never knew why, and, perhaps the author didn’t even know or, perhaps he held back that final card. Yet, it has a valid medical explanation that would perfectly serve a modern plot = adrenaline. From fear, in this case, a saving grace. ❤
    I think my arachnophobic friends who love horror might especially appreciate this one! I, for one, would enjoy more F. McDermott presented time is by the great Jasper L’Estrange...

    • @EnCryptedHorror
      @EnCryptedHorror  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it's funny too, isn't it? The primal reaction to such a small (and harmless) creature generates fear surpassing the terrifying predicament he finds himself in.
      I might be wrong...but I think this may be the author's *only* horror story...

    • @northernlights8126
      @northernlights8126 ปีที่แล้ว

      Late comment as I’ve just listened to this wonderful story.I thought immediately of a huge surge of adrenaline too which overcame the effect of the drug.
