Remarkable Engines: NJDOT 4101

  • After the success of an Remarkable Engines episode on NJT/CNJ 4109, especially after being featured on Railway Age, I was asked to cover NJT's newest heritage unit, which just so happens to be from the same class as 4109: GP40P #4101. This time, this 1968 geep has been repainted in the bluebird livery of NJDOT: a little known but vital time of New Jersey commuter railroading history. So by popular demand, I decided to follow up on 4109 by covering its sister heritage unit.

    I have a reasonable hypothesis why 4101 was the only engine to keep its original number. The reason why 4101 was the only former CNJ geep to keep its original number was because you had 13 locomotives, and your renumbering them within the 4100 range but since 13 is an odd number, one engine has to keep its original number and this will tell the story:
    CNJ 3671 (1968 - 1976) -> NJDOT 4100 (1977 to 1991) -> NJT 4106 (Original Number was from 3677) (1991 - Now)
    CNJ 3672 (1968 - 1976) -> NJDOT 4101 (1977 to 1991 as GP40P) - (1991 Now as GP40PH-2) (Only engine to keep original number)
    CNJ 3673 (1968 - 1976) -> NJDOT 4102 (1977 - 1991) -> NJT 4110 (Original Number was from 3681) (1991 - Now)
    CNJ 3674 (1968 - 1976) -> NJDOT 4103 (1977 - 1991) -> NJT 4111 (Original Number was from 3682) (1991 - Now)
    CNJ 3675 (1968 - 1976) -> NJDOT 4104 (1977 - 1991) -> NJT 4102 (Original Number was from 3673) (1991 - Now)
    CNJ 3676 (1968 - 1976) -> NJDOT 4105 (1977 - 1991) -> NJT 4103 (Original Number was from 3674) (1991 - Now)
    CNJ 3677 (1968 - 1976) -> NJDOT 4106 (1977 - 1991) -> NJT 4109 (Original Number was from 3680) (1991 - Now)
    CNJ 3678 (1968 - 1976) -> NJDOT 4107 (1977 - 1991) -> NJT 4112 (Original Number was from 3683) (1991 - Now)
    CNJ 3679 (1968 - 1976) -> NJDOT 4108 (1977 - 1991) -> NJT 4105 (Original Number was from 3676) (1991 - Now)
    CNJ 3680 (1968 - 1976) -> NJDOT 4109 (1977 - 1991) -> NJT 4107 (Original Number was from 3678) (1991 - Now)
    CNJ 3681 (1968 - 1976) -> NJDOT 4110 (1977 - 1991) -> NJT 4100 (Original Number was from 3671) (1991 - Now)
    CNJ 3682 (1968 - 1976) -> NJDOT 4111 (1977 - 1991) -> NJT 4104 (Original Number was from 3675 (1991 - Now)
    CNJ 3683 (1968 - 1976) -> NJDOT 4112 (1977 - 1991) -> NJT 4108 (Original Number was from 3679 (1991 - Now)

    Even before becoming a Heritage Unit, 4101 always won me over with that absolutely glorious-sounding bell.

    Can’t wait to see this. NJT 4101 the NJDOT. I have before and now from the last few weeks. NJT 4101 the NJDOT had Leslie SU3L, NJT 4109 the CNJ had Leslie RS3L, and 4100 was the only Ex-CNJ unit with the disco stripe and the 1st Generation Nathan K5LA for revenue service.

    4101 and 4109 make me extremely happy. I am fascinated by NJ's railroad history, and seeing original locomotives wearing their old liveries again is great. I hope they stay in service for many years to come. I am pretty sure I have seen 4101 many times before it was recently repainted.

    It's always strange seeing 4109, because she has the same initials as me on the side. As for 4101, her livery reminds me of the old U34CH locomotives.

    I got bored a Few days ago and started looking into NJT, saw the Image of #4101 with #4109 and then Stumbled Into this Video, I watched The UTA #901 when that came out and never subscribed but Enjoyed the Video, but now watching atleast most of the 'Remarkable Engines' Videos, I saw the F40 Video and I want to Recommend Looking into Amtrak F40 #231, Its not As remarkable as Some of the Others, but it Definitely has Very Unique History.
    Good Content Non-the-less.

    (I’m here before the premiere) Literally I was gonna tell you about 4101 when I first found out about it but I didn’t. Then again I think you found out before me as we have this coming up!

    I lived in Allentown PA and would occasionally ride [only] the Raritan Valley line, about 24 years ago I only remember passenger cars without separate engines.
    That's some accent you have there, just for the viewers to note, udder is what he says instead of other, there's a few other things he slips in.

    I have repeatedly run into the GP40-2ph locomotives. I was at Motive Power in Boise Idaho when the went through there in 2006-07. I again ran into some while working in Indiana doing contract work for the failed Hoosier State Express. I currently have two out of five we purchased from San Louis and Rio Grande. Three were rebuilt as GP40-2s while the last two donated parts to make the the three possible. I just find it curious how I keep crossing paths with NJT in my career but never anywhere near NJ.

    Those same GP40Ps actually did run the Hoboken division lines just as they were repainted into the disco stripe scheme. Very shortly after the repaint they did receive what I heard to be Detroit Diesel HEP Generators with 2 small cooling fans (or was it 1?).

      2 Small ones. Then after rebuild into GP40PH-2 it was replaced by Caterpillar 3406 HEP Diesel Generator and 1 big HEP Radiator Fan.
