Pink Floyd are one of my favourite bands, but I really don't understand the vitriolic responses to this playful cover of a Floyd classic. I give Scissor Sisters kudos for being adventurous with their cover - who could have imagined a disco version of CN? It at least provides a novel experience, unlike most covers which differentiate themselves from the original only just enough to justify their existence. As great as the Floyd are, if you afford their songs such reverence that you take this version as a perceived slight against the original you will only make yourself miserable.
This should teach to everyone how to do a cover: it's basically about destroying the original version of a song and being loyal to it as well. Think this is one of the best covers ever, which made me fall in love with the band.
I am a die-hard Floyd fan, the kind who prefers early works like "Meddle" and "A Saucerful of Secrets" over "The Wall" a thousand times. I had an outraged reaction when I first heard that someone had made a dance version of "Comfortably Numb". ("What next? Lady Gaga recording 'Wish You Were Here'?") Then I listened to it and had to shut up in amazement at their boldness. This is not a mere cover, this is a total reinvention of the song that seems to go further than the original, by not only telling how Pink shut himself away from the real world but exploring the inner world he created in its stead - and it's a happy and care-free world where "everything is green and submarine..." ;-) I loved it! But that's only how I perceive it, and I'm just a common man, a nobody. However, David Gilmour absolutely loved it, too - and I guess *his* opinion would count something... No record of what Roger Waters thought, but I guess he'd be grumpy about anything anyway...
Oh no! They covered a classic Pink Floyd song, now I can never listen to the original again! If only there was some way to like both songs at once or for people who don't like this version to listen to the original.

Exactly. When you try to recreate the original exactly, it'll always always be worse, and it'll be pointless, and it'll never replace the original. Every single great cover ever, was substantially different from the original. Think All Along the Watchtower by Hendrix, or With A Little Help From My Friends by Joe Cocker, Mack the Knife by Bobby Darin etc. Covers that are their own song, they're unique, they're really a completely separate thing from the original, and so they stand aside and complement the original instead of trying (and failing) to replace it.

That's what I thought, damn good cover especially as so many covers pale in comparison to the original and are often a lazy attempt to cash in on somebody else's hard work to avoid having to come up with something themselves, which may very easily flop. Very likely if they have that attitude and lack of talent and commitment. Yeah, it's not like the original at all. The original was very chill, very low key and kinda trippy. A bit dark too. Like so much of Pink Floyd's stuff. This was much more upbeat and poppy, without being shallow, fluffy and soulless like most pop now. Sadly, pop like every other entertainment industry these days has stagnated and turned to generic, mediocre mush. That's a whole other story though... Having not heard of the Scissor Sisters at that point I naturally assumed The Bee Gees were accompanying my nervous break down/flashback and that only I could hear it. This cover isn't by any means better or half as good as the original. Comfortably numb is a classic song and its a perfect one too .What makes comfortably numb truly great its that it expresses human pain and suffering through music that touches our heart . This cover has a very lightweight and colourful mood that has nothing to do with comfortably's numb lyrics.Covering such a song was always gonna be a huge challenge. These artists took a very radical approach in order to make something original . It is indeed very original and a solid attempt but it just doesn't work . For me a , Pink Floyd fanatic , listening to this comfortably numb cover is a truly painful experience.

One of the deepest and strongest songs of Pink Floyd's The Wall playing by Scissor Sisters. It's like NIN's e Cash's Hurt. Both are the same songs, but arranged differently, sung differently, the cover gained another whole meaning, but it doesn't mean it's bad.
This is just one of those songs where every time there is a cover version released it adds a new dimension to the track that the original didn't have. I'm a big fan of pink floyd and a fan of scissor sisters and although this version isn't the best, it stands out as a very unique take on a classic song and deserves merit for that.
Exactly. Like it or not, it highlights how many facets are in the original song. This is so different and yet the song doesn't break despite all the changes. That's a testament to PF's song writing, that they wrote such a robust track, and SS's ability to see how far the track could be pushed.

This is what I imagine the Bee Gees would have released in their 'heroin period' lol. Such a strange disconnect between the lyrics and the funky disco vibe of the music itself. Cool, yet oddly unsettling.
Sometimes a PC is more emotional than an instrument (Radiohead's electronica albums are superior to any of their guitar based albums.) but that's not the point. This version simply rejoices the feeling of being numb rather than being all broken up about it. Just because a piece of music is fun and has a sense of humour, it doesn't mean it's emotionless.

Seems that the yanks on here seem to love Pink Floyd same with Led Zep but to be honest in the UK they are not held in the same esteem as Queen, Stones, Beatles etc i mean i am 51 and had no idea this was a Floyd song but then again the only song of theirs i know is ‘Another brick in the wall’ and really only know ‘Stairway to Heaven’ from Led Zep oh and that one from Thor lol whereas i can name a hundred songs from Queen, Stones and Beatles and i am not a fan of them either but their songs are more engrained into our culture than floyd or Zeppelin

I remember the 1st time I heard this on Top Of The Pops I was like "Woah who's this?" I found out it was a band called Scissor Sisters and that was me hooked the 1st album was amazing but then again so was the rest I miss them saw them live twice they was amazing 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🕺🕺🕺

Both are the same songs, but arranged differently, sung differently, the cover gained another whole meaning, but it doesn't mean it's bad.
This is just one of those songs where every time there is a cover version released it adds a new dimension to the track that the original didn't have. I'm a big fan of pink floyd and a fan of scissor sisters and although this version isn't the best, it stands out as a very unique take on a classic song and deserves merit for that.
Exactly. Like it or not, it highlights how many facets are in the original song. This is so different and yet the song doesn't break despite all the changes. That's a testament to PF's song writing, that they wrote such a robust track, and SS's ability to see how far the track could be pushed.

This is what I imagine the Bee Gees would have released in their 'heroin period' lol. Such a strange disconnect between the lyrics and the funky disco vibe of the music itself. Cool, yet oddly unsettling.

Sometimes a PC is more emotional than an instrument (Radiohead's electronica albums are superior to any of their guitar based albums.) but that's not the point. This version simply rejoices the feeling of being numb rather than being all broken up about it. Just because a piece of music is fun and has a sense of humour, it doesn't mean it's emotionless.
There are songs you should keep your hands off. Comfortably numb is one of these songs. Or to put it another way: THAT IS AN ABSOLUTE IMPUDENCE! A CRIME OF THE WORST KIND! MAY YOUR FINGERS FALL OFF AND YOUR VOICE FAIL FOREVER

Seems that the yanks on here seem to love Pink Floyd same with Led Zep but to be honest in the UK they are not held in the same esteem as Queen, Stones, Beatles etc i mean i am 51 and had no idea this was a Floyd song but then again the only song of theirs i know is ‘Another brick in the wall’ and really only know ‘Stairway to Heaven’ from Led Zep oh and that one from Thor lol whereas i can name a hundred songs from Queen, Stones and Beatles and i am not a fan of them either but their songs are more engrained into our culture than floyd or Zeppelin
