I think the most important lesson 1 should learn when getting into competitive play is you will not win every battle. You are gonna lose a lot and that's not bad. Like he said in the video it's impossible to squeeze everything onto a team and you will encounter teams that you don't have an answer to or teams that will shut down what you're trying to do or you're just about to win but that 10 percent chance to miss heat wave happens or you were fully paralyzed for the turn or you flinched to an iron head. RNG will say that you lose the battle but that's just part of the game
That’s very important to remember!!! that’s usually what I teach people as well! No matter how great your team is… you’re either run into someone who outsmarts you, you miss something that was crucial, you make a wrong Prediction, or the team your facing has answers for your team &/or you have NO answer for there time… it happens and that’s ok. The game has HIGH levels of RNG and prediction in it… being ok with that and not letting it get to u is very important
I've been a super casual player since Blue & Red. All I've ever done is pick Pokémon I like and just giving them the same type move and getting rid of the ones that do no damage. I'm trying my best to learn so thank you for the help. P.S My favourite Pokémon is Zebstrika, that's how casual I am.

Great video man, looking forward to the series! Even as a more experienced player I don’t think you can ever be too familiar with the basics and fundamentals of the game we play, so this series should really be useful to everyone 😁
I know this is an older video and you might not see this but, this series is amazing and exactly what I needed for team building. Thank you so much. You are the best competitive poketuber for competitive players
I just started playing pokemon unbound and have really enjoyed the upped difficulty instead of just spamming my strongest move and sweeping! I'm also starting to learn about EV and IV training and it's so interesting and cool! I was never allowed to play these games as a kid so now I'm 25 and attempting to learn it and really make my brain work and it's been so fun so far! Gotta say though thanks for compressing these down into shorter 10 minute videos and making it easier for a noob like me to understand! Having it broken down into ~10 minute videos is soooo much easier to digest than like a feature film length video explaining it all! Thank you again and I look forward to watching more of your videos!
I love that u took this approach. I have been a casual player since the late 90s... Looking to up my game. Look forward to receiving ur advice and help
This is really what I need.. And even though I'm not like other players that play hardcore which I play only for fun.. I suck at building teams.. And this serve a subscribe
You have very good content. I'm glad you popped up in my recommendations. I've been searching for this info for quite a while, and have come across other pokemon youtubers and you have the best educational videos.
This might seem a bit strange but this video has inspired me to work on a script for a similar video/video series for another game I play since there's a lot of overlap with the role concepts in that game (sweepers and wallbreakers mainly) compared to in Pokemon.
I’m making a story and I’m trying to make a balanced team with various sorts of personalities. It’s gonna be a dragon, dark, and fire type team with some Electric, (maybe) fairy, ghost type, Physic type, and fighting type Pokémon thrown in. So videos like this really help
I only play 3v3 battle stadium, so it’s harder to fit in all the roles listed, but then again not all of the roles may be needed in that format. Still great info for any format and can’t wait to see the next vid
Second comment on the same day to thank you for your videos they're really interesting and helpful, and your explanation is precise but clear. Thanks man !
A very clear and concise video for beginners! I love this series already. My teambuilding skills are kind of decent I guess, but I could definitely use a deeper understanding of what I am doing and why I am doing it. Because my strategy so far was to steal teams and movesets and then tweak them according to my own playstyle and experience lol. I look forward to a video of yours explaining which Pokemon have great synergy and practical examples on how to use them well together.
Glad to hear it! Personally, I find that team building can help improve your own skill in-game, as it gives you a great understanding of what makes teams tick.
This was super helpful. I want to get into playing ranked games in scarlet/violet and most of the other resources I found use very specific examples to explain team building that I can't understand most of it because I don't have the experience.
This is exactly the kind of video I was looking for, thank you, jeez. Team and play videos are nice and the ones that tell you what every stat and nature does are informative but i want to know how team building works!!!
6:45 Hey uhhh I'm playing doubles and the first thing you learn in vgc is that hazards aren't all that helpful Do you have other vids that are more geared towards Doubles or should I look elsewhere
Having varying types and stuff is only if you want to win a lot and fight really good players. The thing is that, most people have no idea what they are doing so you could for instance, choose your favorites. If you have good moves and you understand how to play right, your still gonna win.
Lenny by my understanding, a tank is a Pokémon that’s like support, and can take a lot of hits. For example, togekiss learns this move called follow me, which makes it so all the attack hit it. In doubles, you can use this so togekiss takes all the attacks, because togekiss has very good hp and special defense and defense. Also, I think a wall breaker means a Pokémon to have that defeats Pokémon like these, because if you can’t deal with Pokémon like togekiss, it can be a very bad situation.
Would my Ribombee be considered Utility then? I have it to set up Sticky Web, but I also knows Quiver Dance which I use if Ribombee hasn't been hit yet.

Gma is getting older so I live with her to help her out around the house and when she goes out. Honestly though I like the old/rustic/conservative style of decoration anyhow. I also want to not on topic I really like that you broke these up into lessons so you can refer back to individual lessons when you need a refresher on a topic and allows you to watch them at your own pace with out having to chapter search or any work like that just make a playlist put em in and bam you can always find them.
This is very helpful! I'm only just now getting into competitive play, so this is a great starting point, thanks!
Lol I always make gimmick teams like my doubles NU pink shiny team consisting of a Virizion (assault vest) and Sneasel (eviolite) to use beat up and get 4 stages to my physical attack. Then using reflect to half physical damage (if the Sneasel lives). And since my attack is so low, I can also use foul play against any strong physical opponents (with STAB). First time anyone has properly explained pivots to me. I've only ever been told their characteristics, not their actual job.
It's the war of attrition through hps. Switching in a mon that 2 hit something and takes 3+ hits in return is just favorable for tempo.

I’m a little confused on the difference between sweepers and speed control, they sound pretty similar
Setup sweepers usually need to use a setup move to become fast enough to sweep (like dragon dance on salamence), so they can't swap in and immediately threaten somebody out with speed.
Speed control pokemon, on the other hand, do just that. However, if a speed control pokemon (like a fast dragapult with choice specs or a landorus with a choice scarf) is given the right opportunity, they can sweep, too. So yes, you're right to point out the overlap between the two!
