I feel like the past theme could go in different ways: - We go waaay into the past, even before the great turf war and meet Cuttlefish and Octavio before they became enemies, we get something like another species being "the bad guys" then later being the good guys like it happened with the octos, before something bad happened to them and the great turf war. - We get something more "aesthetic-wise" like Splat3 with the chaos theme, with the idols being more traditional of different cultures, primarily Japanese, I kinda imagine Shiver x3, or x4 - Maybe something in-between. People have speculated about "cuttlelings", and we've seen a past idol group like the coikals, so we could get to meet Idols that were popular before the Squid Sisters, and had a resurgence in fame after Team Past won the grand fest. And with this I have questions about splat4, like: Will tri-color battles become a new mode? Or will they continue doing 3-way splatfests at all? Or would we get 4-team battles on splatfests? I can see Nintendo asking the dev team for this, because it could be another mode to excite players, but I like the 3-way splatfests even if they can seem very skewed on which team gets to win (I was on Frye's team most of the time, I feel bad for her :( )
I think that for the 10th anniversary we will get a Splatoon direct. Maybe some merch/comic/anime news, the full reveal and release for a ftp Splatoon battle Royale and the teaser for splat 4 that will be released summer 2026
@rizirone as nintendo fans we see 20 30 million as the normal but that's the exception. There are ove 5000 games on switch splatoon sells in the top 0.001. It's sales are monstrous the only reason they don't is because 6 of the best selling games of all time are on Switch. (That's not a joke of the top 50 best selling games of all time switch has 6 spots)

I’m not saying I know how you’d adapt the game to that gameplay, I’m not, but just because you can’t THINK of an idea to make something work, DOESN’T mean it doesn’t exist. Best we'll get is a medieval or feudal Japan inspired city. A great turf war campaign is super possible, just think of it as Cuttlefish retelling the war, maybe even alongside Octavio. Imagine a campaign where each level swapped between the different sides, and the final Octoling level shows you a world where they won the war. A Splatoon spin-off seems wayyyy too early. One thing about Nintendo is that their game franchises are closely tied to their genre, Side Order only got away with it since it was DLC within the same engine. Splatoon 4 will most definitely be a Splatoon 3 Deluxe... at launch. Both Splatoon 2 and 3 were just slightly improved versions of their predecessors at launch that came into their own across years of updates. I have my doubts that they would make a spin-off solely based on past winning the grand fest (seems like something too important to leave to chance), but personally I hope we get some kind of spin-off. Splatoon 3's issues have little to do with time because it's the splatoon game that's been in development the longest, it's real flaws are the direction it was taken in. It's hard to imagine them doing anything exciting with a direct sequel (honestly I find it easier to imagine them removing content, putting us back to 1 kit per weapon again and removing modes like challenges). With a spin off or really any form of non-mainline content though, we can finally see the franchise expand beyond the mold it's been stuck in. Whether it's a salmon run game, a tableturf game, a great turf war game or even just an anime, I think any one of those things would be more exciting than splatoon 4 right now.
Incredibly small nitpick but I don’t think looking at yokai watch is a good example for why splatoon could or couldn’t get an anime. Since yokai watch was conceptualized as a multimedia franchise, meaning the anime isn’t really an adaptation of the game but rather a complementary piece to the rest of the franchise. Similar to the way the my little pony shows were made to add character and story to the pony toys to make them more appealing to play with.
I still think a great turf war shooter could work but at a much slower pace. I don’t think turf war multiplayer is realistic to how actual battles in the splatoon universe would play out

with the past we could get a mix of old gear mixed with modern stuff. kinda tradition-modernism mix. kinda like the deepcut songs or something.
