Cave Story has a Fourth Ending

- The original Cave Story has been out for almost eight years, and only recently has the fourth ending been discovered. This "fourth ending" consists of an alternate path through the game which enables you to save the lives of King, Toroko, the Colons, and lets you and Curly Brace go home with the Sakamotos. For some time, even NICALiS was not aware of this. And the members of the Cave Story Tribute site forums condemn any idea of there being a fourth ending. This will likely shock a lot of people, seeing as how some other parodies have been made about a possible fourth ending in Cave Story. Note that there is a lot of skipped new content in this video, such as the ability to upgrade the missile launcher that Kanpachi catches, the cutscene in the Core room, and much more. So really, the only way to see all of this new content and for it all to make sense is for you to try this yourself.

Yep, this video is fake. There is no fourth ending to Cave Story. The whole fourth ending was an April fools prank that used gameplay from a mod that I made in an attempt to look like it's a part of the official game. In addition, all videos that attempt to support this as true are equally fake. And people who claimed this is real either fell really hard for this, or were playing along. Well, it took about a year for it to finally stop being funny. I decided to end this prank due to how far downhill the reception on my second video went, as well as some encouragement from some of my friends to lay this hoax to rest. This is the best and most convincing fake I have ever seen. I completely bought it until I scrolled down into the comments, and I was hyping my nuts off throughout the whole video. This was extremely amusing, so hats off to you.

Well the mod for this exists.
You know, this ending is actually more satisfying and fulfilling than the actual best ending, since you're able to see characters which previously didn't ever talk to each other interact and be in the same room. I don't know why, but that feeling is kind of special.

Tho heres my take: certain characters always die in the story regardless of the ending you go for, and this ending would supposedly keep them safe and I had feelings about that. That's all :)

I wish this was an actual thing in the game, the best ending kinda left me with a sour taste cause you technilly go away with curly and balrog but the others don't even know what happened to you at all.

I fell for this so massively, that I actually initiated a hard mode run through with my friend and kept hyping this ending up. Needless to say, we got to the sand zone and basically screamed at the TV. Amazingly done.
The level of detail in this, explaining the few odd pointless weird details as well.
Even 11 years later this video is a masterpiece. I can feel your love for the game come through even if it is but a prank.
The dialogue and flow of odd actions for this ending it all feels straight out of the base game, enough to where I have a hard time not considering this potentially canon. Even the weird backtracking segments or checking NPCs at odd points.
I hope you are doing well to this day, maybe this video is a complex joke to you, but I think it is something beautiful.

The fact that the Blade doesn't level up to Level 3 is such a good touch.
I know this was a mod and an was revealed to be an april fools video later on but this forth ending has a lot of logical things put into it the game already mentions how the sleeping dog tells the future and because of that that could had changed things I think pixel wanted us to think about the story and its detail so we could all change it with our imagination.
I just want to say that your fourth ending was a clever idea since a lot of the game story stayed together and all the stuff that happened would probably had happened in the game if it was coded to do that.
The actual best ending involves crazy stuff, so this tier of random seems real.
This video has so many little details to make it more believable, I especially loved misery showing up to Jenka's house I found that really cute
I have to say, even though it is a fake ending, I can tell a LOT of thought went into this, and all of the events are definitely made convincing enough to make it believable (i.e. saving the cure-all for Prof. Booster, and whatnot). It definitely looks legit enough to be a proper planned ending, and the only thing that would have made me sceptical about its existence is how apparently, the Aeon Genesis translators would have indeed translated all the text from the events leading up to the 4th ending, but never mentioned the existance of such for years, not even after the game had already been re-released several times.
But hey, it's definitely good and convincing enough to have been a believable alternate ending, so I'm not even mad about this being fake. =)
Wouldn't mind a game update for the Steam version making this ending official.

@@SamnissArandeen Gotta agree. This ending is way more satisfying than the official "Best Ending". Like, they make you go through so much stuff during the very last parts of the game (especially the B.S. sanctuary), and when you finally get that ending, .....it's rather anticlimatic. Like, sure you save Curly, kill Ballos, and by extension put a permanent end to the threat of the demon crown and the red flowers, but Sue, Professor Booster and the others all never truly find out what happened to you. As for as they know, you died back there trying to escape. And to top it off, none of them aside from Quote, the colons and the bad guys even know Curly even exists. Despite her role in the story, she's practically a ghost as far as they're concerned.

There was one mistake in this hack. In the game, the always refer to multiple Mimiga as "Mimiga" but in one of the text boxes in the hack, it said "Mimigas".
+Sam Werner There's actually more than one mistake in this mod, but the one you named is not one of them. In the fan translation, "Mimigas" is the proper plural form of Mimiga, whereas in the official translation, "Mimiga" is used both singularly and plurally as you stated. This was a mod of the freeware version of the game which used the fan translation, so in order to be consistent with the Aeon Genesis conventions, I had them say "Mimigas." Play the freeware version, and you'll actually see them say "Mimigas." If this were a CS+ mod that was trying to blend in with NICALiS' English translation, though, then your criticism would be valid.

Everything else was perfect, as if from pixel himself. You even thought about the Rope at the end and changed the dialog to "Picked her up" xD
+Bill Erak Dragón Dorado That flaw was present in earlier versions of the mod (such as the one used to make this video), but in later versions, I added a cutscene in which Misery and the Doctor go the the Core room and transport the Core to the black space. I then changed the text "Undead Core" to "Augmented Core." Anyway, thanks, glad you enjoyed the mod!

PS: I have the remastered version on the 3DS (you know, the one by Studio Pixel and Nicalis) and I have not found any instances of "Mimigas" are there any in that version?

Man, I didn't give this nearly enough credit some-9 years ago. The way you managed to weave all this to sound perfectly believable, using erroneous text about "4 unique endings" to your advantage, *and* having the mod be really high quality on top of that is really damn impressive. Goooood shit

It's an April Fools joke people. Don't be pathetic. I wish this was an official ending but it was well pulled off so I enjoyed this video.
It's October 2019 and I believed every word in this video. I never completed the game back when I first played it (the 3DS eshop version back in maybe 2013) and decided to replay it again on the Mega Drive. Loving the experience of completing it (standard undead core, jumping off the island, credits rolling) I thought I'd check out some secrets and consider another playthrough picking up everything I'd missed..and I watched this amazing hoax video TWICE - memorising the key actions needed to get the 'best' ending. So you got me good. Real good. Bravo. What an amazing job.

You didn't save King or Toroko, did you? It's still possible to get the fourth ending if you get the Machine gun. But Booster dies even if you give him the Cure-all if you didn't save King or Toroko, or if you fight Balrog in the Boulder Chamber before talking to Professor Booster.

Wow, Hayden, great job. As soon as I saw you mention the otherwise useless shootable blocks, I paused your video and dived back in to Cave Story to try it. I was totally fooled and I'm happy about it. It was a good excuse to play CS again and it felt satisfying to see your alternate reality where Toroko and the Colons survive.
However, I'm actually glad it's not in the official game. I think PIxel told a more powerful story by allowing his characters to die with no chance of a Hollywood ending. I admit it affected me emotionally when I first experienced seeing the characters I'd been interacting with die. That's part of why I think Cave Story is beloved by so many people. It lives up to its title by weaving the player into a genuine *story*.
By the way, even though you made this in 2012, I hadn't seen the video until today, April First 2016. How wonderfully appropriate.

Actually, when you bring the fifth dog to the house, Balrog appears and takes the keys. Although most people give the dog to Jenka, you are able to take it with you.
If only it was real, I've played this mod and it is by far the most convincing lore friendly one out there. Bravo good sir, I honestly wish they would sneak it in as an update to an already spectacular game.
Cave Story: No Mimiga Left Behind Edition
I remember watching this video years back. I wasn't sure if it was real or not but now I'm aware of the hoax. The amount of elaboration in the walk through make it believable. I wish it was real
I remember being so convinced by this video when I was young that I even tried shooting the blocks in my recent playthrough. Looking back at it now as an old man I can sort of see the cracks but it's still so well done.

You simply don't need the Iron Bond if you're going for the fourth ending.
Major flaw in the mod. You still fight the undead core even though you didn't fight the core to begin with. So the core couldn't have been undead and it would still be in the underwater temple thing

I just recently discovered this mod. That was brilliantly done. The way you locked out certain areas/items from this path was a clever touch. I did notice a little continuity error during the ending though, with the dialogue between Curly and Balrog being completely intact despite their first meeting never happening in this timeline.

Andrew Marcum Yes, because it debunks Meurer's argument that the picture was fake due to using IE. That blog post actually exists, and it really says that, which gave me a lot of leverage in tricking people into believing this ending really exists.

Currently, we've just starting planning. I'm just asking early because we weren't sure how far to work with the storyline until we got to hear if we had permission from you or not.
So far, the team consists of 7 people (including myself). As soon as we have a build/demo of the fangame done we're planning on opening a thread, so I'll link it then.
Just so you know, this is only a side-project for us. Most of us are still in school at the moment, so we have less time than we'd like to dedicate towards it. This is more of a "work on it when we have time to" sort of deal.
It's going to take at *least* three years to complete (it's going to be rather extensive), so don't hold your breath day-to-day. xD (We'll have a demo out much sooner though, of course).
This project is called 'Project Never', referencing the fact that my team's taking on a rather daunting task, and being realistic, we may never complete it, due to life being unpredictable. But be sure as hell that we'll try our bests!
For being so generous as to give us your permission, you'll be given early access to the project, and even if it's glitchy as hell, you'll be the first to know once we have some sort of playable demo. xD (Think of it as a invitation for a closed game alpha.)

i don't think any video online can ever replicate the level of sheer trolling this video accomplished.
everything about this video on release was the perfect cocktail to make people actually believe it, it was a fairly niche game when this video released (and still arguably is), it just being perfectly in line with how bullshit some of cave story's secrets are already, the fact that you also have "video evidence" in the form of the mod, and how the internet at this point has changed so much if someone made a bullshit claim like "DELTARUNE CHAPTER 3 HAS A SECRET FOURTH ENDING" it'd get proven false within the hour

@@MrOfTheIdiot It isn't a just matter of whether or not it is technically difficult to mod a game. It's a question of whether or not you have something meaningful to add to it. I could mod in some self-insert fanfic character who ends up being the one to really save the day in the end, but most people probably wouldn't like that.
