IMPROVE FIG QUALITY with CAPRIFIGS

  • Some of the best tasting figs varieties need pollination. Grafting a couple of prolific caprifig varieties will help to maintain a symbiotic fig wasp population to ensure adequate fig pollination. As a bonus you might find that some of your common fig varieties also improve in quality.

    Mr. Sacadura, thank you for being so clear in your instructions and demonstrations. My fig grafts in the past two years have gone from hit and miss to over 90% take rate. My favorite is the whip and tongue if diameters allow. But bud grafts and modified cleft grafting have been working well, too. Once again, thank you for your excellent teaching.

    Fig pollination is essential for Smyrna type varieties and can also improve Common fig varieties. Take the time to graft a few caprifig varieties and install a fig wasp population near your fig orchard, if your hardiness zone allows for it. A pollinated fig is simply unbelievable, regarding taste.

    Can I cut a scion from One tree in early spring and graft ir to another in the same day or a few days after, or does the scion have to be dorment for some time before grafting? If I can do it, is early spring the best time? Thanks.

    • @JSacadura
      @JSacadura  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, you can, provided the tree from where you removed the scion is not ahead of the rootstock. That i, the rootstock and the scion should already have awaken from dormancy and are both moving sap. If the rootstock is still dormant and the scion awake, there is a chance the graft will fail.

    Hi. Over the last three yeast I’ve tried grafting a white variety of wine onto a red variety with no success. Then I was told that it requires 25 C for the callus to form - is that correct? Here in Denmark temperatures above 25 c is, unfortunately, not common.

    Thank you for your clear and precise commentary but I have a question? How does the capri wasp survive for the next season?

    • @JSacadura
      @JSacadura  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It lays eggs in successive crops of caprifigs (3 in total). The winter crop protects them and keeps them alive if the winter is not excessively cold. I will cover that in detail in my upcoming video on the fig wasp life cycle.

    Hola JSacadura, precisamente tengo en marcha algo parecido para el año que viene. Mi idea de injertar un esqueje de una higuera de semilla que tiene mucho vigor y que saque de este año con 1,5m de alto, en la que quiero ponerle varios tipos de cabrahigos distintos para formar un solo árbol multivariedad. Lo que me esta resultando un poco complicado es encontrar distintas cabrahigeras así que si me pudieses indicar donde conseguiste las tuyas, me harias un favor. Muchas gracias por la calidad de tus videos y por todo el esfuerzo que en ellos pones.

    • @JSacadura
      @JSacadura  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      When my caprifig grafts are established, with regular caprifig crops, its simply a matter of bringing a few mature wild figs filled with wasps from the south of the country. The wasps will leave the figs and will start looking for a new crop of caprifigs to lay eggs. Hopefully they will be able to establish themselves and survive the winter. I will address all these nuances in my upcoming video on the fig wasp life cycle.

    Do wasp also like to pollinate common figs or only Smyrna type figs?

    • @JSacadura
      @JSacadura  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In my experience, fig wasps pollinate both types. They don't seem to have a preference for the Smyrna type. As I said in the video a good common fig turn excellent with pollination (more juicy and with seeds that taste like little almonds).
