Converting old grapevines can be an effective way of using an established root system and change varieties in just one year. In this video I show my favorite techniques to graft old grapevines, in the field, along with some tips to increase graft success. If you enjoy my work, LIKE and leave a COMMENT to help me make more. I will try to answer as many comments as I can.
I'm in the Niagara grape growing area of Canada. I get a most 100% success rate now thanks, for the most part, from your videos. We get some really cold weather in winter so I've learned that graft timing is important to get the union to fully heal prior to winter. My best success seems to be right after the vine has finished the early spring push and the daytime temperatures are in the mid 20s. I get about 1 meter of growth in the graft year and extensive growth in 2nd year. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge.
Hi, Peter. That's wonderful. In my area the period you mentioned is also the best. Its always nice when your hard work pays off and is useful for someone. Thanks for the nice comment and the support.
@@JSacaduragracias a todos y a usted para éstos maravillosos videos.. una pregunta en Finlandia por ejemplo el verano es muy corto, cuando puedo hacer esto trabajo??!! Muchas gracias ☺️
I Will try this in the spring.! Here in Iowa many seedling wild grapes are growing on field fences where the birds perch. Your tips are very thourogh.!😊
I was lucky to get hold of a few scions that I would like to use to graft some old grapevines (30-40yo). The best time for grafting according to you seems to be late spring which is ~April here in Germany. I'd be keen to learn how to properly store the scions for such a long time (4-5month) especially as I don't have enough space in my fridge. Maybe you can make a video on how to harvest and store them.
Great thematic for me! Here in South of France, there are many old wine plants who are not producing interesting production anymore, perfect! I think I have enough theoric in head, so let's practice!
i 've always liked your grafting techniques. Never have i missed any of your grafting videos. All your grafting videos are really informative. Just a small request....kindly show us how do graft walnut plants. will be appreciated.
I have grafted several local walnuts with more productive varieties but I wasn't making videos at the time. Next spring, I will graft a few more and I will publish a video on the subject. Thanks for the comment and the support.
Hola, Manuel.
Looking forward to your fig videos. I tried a bunch of fig grafts this year without success, I suspect my root stock wasn't "awake" enough and the scionwood died before the root stock woke up due to a very cold April.
Hi, Don. Best results with figs require that the rootstock is fully awake. Over here I have very mild springs so I can graft since March, but I tend to wait and graft in April or even May in some years. Whip and Tongue is one of the best options for higher success rate but its tricky to perform with the fig scion wood (which most of the times if hollow). I would recommend the modified cleft graft in your case. Best of luck with your future grafts.
That's a good idea. Unfortunately, I probably won't be able to take the time needed to make a good video on the subject. Next year, I have to restructure part of my irrigation system. I will try to make a short video on the subject.
top videos, all of them! i learnd so much, also some things my granddad didn't know... thanks for all those good and seemingly well proven informations:) i have a question: what's the black tape that is used? just black parafilm or more like a non sticking type of insulating tape? looks like its really good for fixating everything in place...
I just bought 3 good variety of green and seedless grapes. I ll get some buds from the new plant to grafting on the old vines.....thank you for advised. Is this now the best time to do so? I m live on North Shore.
I have had a lot of grapes from one vine last year but the birds ate hald of them even though had been covers with the gift bags. The birds cut the grapes fruits the whole bunches down to the ground then open the bags...very smart birds.
Great videos. I have 8 good grafts of black figs onto a large branch of green fig. Now i need mandarin scions to graft onto a poor flavoured clementine tree. Where in Spain can i obtain them? Any ideas?
Hi sacadura I grafted rustic vines on another rustic vines that we normal plant that varieties without roots and without rootstock we never graft because are grapes vines but I grafted aramon variety and used as rootstock and the scion I used vines jaquez variety do you think I will good results?
Can a domesticated grape be grafted onto a wild native species like a rivergrape root? I've got one in my back yard that I swear has got to be 12'' or more in diameter on the bottom of the vine.
Salve a voi maestro, allora bisogna refrigerate le mare da gennaio per giugno per fare l'innesto? Grazie a voi. Saluti dal nord Salento Puglia (ITA) 😁👍😎
In my area I harvest the scions in late winter when doing the winter pruning. The grapevines are dormant and its the best time to select the best scion wood.
My friend i show you already your video about grafting and also like with subscribe ..May i know sir what is your grapes variety in your farm please...

I had 100% graft failure on grapes this year. I think the scions were refrigerated too long and grafted too late.
What month is this done?
A stuffed peregrine falcon would keep them away
Aqui no brasil nao precisa dessas mariposas no figo
Nu se aliniaza cambiul ?
What do you think about the drilling technique?
Why did you change variety
I dont know why i always fail in grafting grape, all of the scion always dried out. Out of 20 only 1 succes.
