@@JSacadura Hello J. Sacadura. I live in the suburbs of Aveiro. Your vídeos on Grafting have been very helpful to me! I am glad to see you in good health, thank you for the new video) thanks to your advice, this spring I have already grafted more than 50 trees, most of which have taken root and are developing well! And last year's vaccinations already have ovaries of apples, apricots, peaches and plums, cherries and pears also bloomed. Please shoot a video about how you root cuttings of apple trees and other trees.🙏🏻Thank you!
Doing better, thanks. I'm currently filming a "how to root cuttings" video that applies to several different fruit types. It should be available in a couple of months.
I just love your videos, they give me the confidence to experiment with different techniques. This year I used a modified whip & tongue technique on 50 apple rootstocks that I never got round to grafting last year with 100% success.
Thank you for all videos what you have made and upload to your channel. Those encourage me to try apple grafting with good success. Now I have made 100+ grafting to my future apple orchard here in Finland. All the best to you.
Great video! The whip and tongue graft is one I’ve yet to try, but definitely looks worth looking into. I’ve had great success with just the regular cleft graft on a lot of trees.
Cleft works fine as long as you make sure the cambium lines of scion and rootstock cross at some point. Whip and tongue is more difficult to execute but it's almost impossible to fail cambium cross at some point.
Thanks to you I suceesfully grafted a necterine branch on to a peach tree here in central Portugal!! Thanks so much for your excellent videos!! Muito obrigado pelos videos excelentes!!

It's better to prune them while they are dormant, so I can only do it at the end of the year. In most cases just keep the center of the tree open and prune any branch that grow excessively high to keep the tree under control. Most of the techniques I use in this video regarding Open Center Pruning can be used in fig trees - th-cam.com/video/Y8Qg1Z-c_U4/w-d-xo.html
The black tape is self vulcanizing rubber tape. The translucent tape is parafilm. The first one you will find in hardware stores in the plumbing department, the second one I've only had luck finding online on hobby sites.
Not enough time to do it all. Something's got to give. I hope to have more time in the near future and I will probably return to some of the fruit tree forums. Thanks for the comment.
good information about grafting evergreens like loquat and olives are hard to find. maybe not the grafting technique itself but when to get scionwood, when to graft, how to keep the scionwood...
I have a question that i hope you dont mind me asking. I was wondering what type of tape is the black tape you use. It doesnt appear to be electric tape. Also... is that regular parafilm you are using? I watch your videos many times over and over again. Thank you for teaching us. Absolutely top quality grafting videos - thank you for sharing your immense knowledge Mr. Sacadura! Do you know of any forum/ group for us Portuguese wannabe grafters to exchange fruit tree grafts? I am in the Minho region and, apart from having a huge desire to start playing with my father in law's poorly managed orchard, I am also trying to get my mother a "cu de burro" apple variety to help her reconnect to her infancy. Any tips on where to find good Portuguese traditional fruit scions? Obrigado, Miguel.
Unfortunately, I am removed from the exchange forums nowadays (lack of time) and don't know any in Portugal. Although I believe there are some portuguese facebook communities that might help, like this one - facebook.com/groups/Enxertias.podas.estacaria/?locale=pt_BR
Thank you for all your time and effort in making these videos! They have helped me immensely! I was wondering, how long can you keep dormant scions in the fridge before they aren't viable?
You can get away with 2 months, in most cases. After that, it depends on fruit type, but most will not be in a condition that will allow graft success. I have grafted scions successfully after 4 months in the fridge, but they are the exception.
You mostly talk about changing varieties, when you cut off all of the rootstock after the graft takes. Could you make a video on framework grafting (when you are happy with what you have, just want to add more)? For example, threre is a young but estsblished pluot tree with 4 varieties, and you would like to add a 5th pluot or a plum variety to this tree, without removing any of the existing ones. How to make this addition grow well? A lot of people have smaller yards, not farms :), and would like to add, not replace! Thanks!
What are your thoughts on chip budding in spring? I know its more of a late season technique but it can be useful for wonky scionwood or just stretching out your supplies. I have plans to graft a Che onto a small potted Osage orange rootstock this way soon.
I use chip budding a lot in the spring. It works quite well. I even use the chip bud from the lower part of the scion (that would be discarded when making the cut for other types of graft).
Excellent video. Quick question….on one of the bark grafts it appears as if the long , sloping cut faces outwards not facing the rootstock. Is this a mistake? btw how sharp are your knives. ? Shaving sharp? Do you use sharpening stones? What’s your final grit size? Stopping as well?
No, it's not a mistake. That outward cut won't do nothing regarding the graft union. It's just to slim down the scion to produce a better fit under the bark. Check my videos on grafting knife use, selection and sharpening, like these two (th-cam.com/video/-AsaxoqzU88/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/5cdNElL5YHI/w-d-xo.html). They will probably answer all your questions.
Boa noite.
i wonder if someone tried the saddle graft (turned around cleft graft)? i got some succsess with same diameter rootstock/scion on different fruit trees. i learned it by experimenting, but there is not much information about it.
The knife has to be very sharp. Otherwise the grafts tend to fail and you increase the chances of cutting yourself. Check my videos on the use and sharpening of grafting knives, like these two (th-cam.com/video/-AsaxoqzU88/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/5cdNElL5YHI/w-d-xo.html)
Probably the vascular tissues of the graft could not provide nutrition to the scion. I tend to leave the cover a bit more (slightly open) to protect it from direct sun in the first week. Better luck next time.
