So now that over the years we pushed into bigger trucks and trailers and we have this mid size toyhauler rv, and also a higher rated tow Ram gas 1500 truck, I though I would take a step backwards and try this out for sake of comparing to see how I remember it going the first time around.
That said with that experience, the big question, is doing the same thing easier?
Or is pulling this combo something I should never of done to begin with when I started out?
This may help you decide how to enjoy your vacations, feel safe, and grow confidence.
Thru this video I’ll take you for a Walkaround then highway and hill ride, followed by my conclusions and suggestions… enjoy the video and thanks for watching.

You’re fine. I have a 2024 ram 1500 3.6 torque (leased) and towed 3 yards of crushed stone with a 3k lb dump trailer. Total weight about 11,500. Truck is only rated for 6,500 lol lol

Not married to any brand but a fan of the Hemi and the Cayote will always be. And as for towing I thought the world of them. Since I have towed over a hundred TT's and heavy equipment. With the trucks they gave me for the delivery which are all nicely equipped trucks; nothing less then a Big Horn or an XLT. But then it happened my first tow with a new 3.5 Turbo 2021 XLT F150; delivery to Boone, NC. towing a 27ft Airstream. Game changer how a Turbo handles the hills and small NE mountains. Not dropping gears constantly to capture torque even over an overpass Hwy bridge the 5.7 or the 5.0 and the 5.3 Chevy had to hunt down for gears since these motors have No Low End Torque. Yet gas Turbos' act just like a diesel on the grades. Turbos allow for low end torque giving you that smooth consistency of RPM range; which also reflects in better MPG's when towing and to add the 10 speed trans also improves overall towing characteristics. This is a good video and we need more like this; so that others can capture confidence what their trucks can handle. I placed a request to use the F150 3.5 Ecoboost XLT for most of my delivery's when called on. And the owner who is also a business associate had no issues. Larger loads, like the one you have there? As of today the fleet of trucks is 60% Turbo. Toyota and Ford and love how the Tundra's turbo tows as well. But we are all awaiting the new 2025 RAM 3.0 Turbo. There are 3 on order. One of them will be the HO version of the Turbo. Ford has not yet dropped the 5.0. Sadly RAM is dropping this beautiful V8. After hearing the Main Engineer at RAM he said emissions is placing a beating on them. That only means Ford at some point will follow. You can thank Cali for that one!

I’ve got a 6 speed ‘13 Ram 1500 with HD tow package. It’s a 5.7 Hemi. Looking at a new camper that’s 40’ and 8200 lbs. dry weight. Everyone has me convinced it will be fine, but here I am.
Thought about putting air bags in the springs to pair with a 10k EZ hitch setup. Thoughts?

I have the same toy hauler only I have fiberglass sides and my max loaded weight is about 9400lbs with everything full water, fuel and cargo. Just around 8700lbs with some water to travel with and average load. tow with a 1/2 ton ram with 4 corner air suspension and it does okish but I wish I had 3/4 ton and will upgrade soon now that the market is coming back to somewhat normal. I was just ready to buy when things went nuts. If you back in the side x side it puts the motor weight closer to the trailer axles and off the rear gives you less sway by far. I do agree 7500lbs is about all you want with 1/2 ton for safety and an enjoyable trip. BTW. E-torque only helps the first little bit from stop and does nothing after that. The ram has plenty of torque and low 1st and 2nd gears to do the job. My opinion is its a big waste of money and future maintenance cost.

Forget the "towing capacity" ratings. You'll never get there without exceeding the gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of your truck. The towing capacity rating assumes a mere 400 pounds of occupants, cargo and fuel. Drag your rig across a CAT Scale and compare the gross to your GCWR. You're overweight.

Haven't ever gotten close to that but, supposedly.

Thanks for sharing. Size of trailer matters. Bigger, wider, longer trailer is over 30ft for 1500 1/2 truck will be challenged taking in consideration road conditions, wind , hills... It's just not on safe side. Power wise it's fine. Trailer smaller then 30 ft is fine, when you can relax and tow with confidence. Everything over that size you need longer truck 2500. Plus your tires on 1500 are 22" if I'm not wrong? That size just doesn't have enough side wall. You need 18 or 20 inch rims.

I have Chevy Silverado Texas edition it can pull 9,000 but maybe can go up to 12,0000. But our 5th wheel travel trailer is 15,000 the truck 20" tire's should be good. Maybe could better shock's or something and turbo to give it more power.

Are those the factory pirellis on that GT, are they good to go on towing a 6K Lb 24 ft RV in your opinion? I just got that truck yesterday and wasnt sure if i should replace the pirellis for an upcoming 200 mile trip.

Ram shouldn't have moved the 4+7 way trailer connectors from the left side to the right. Idk why they did that but it makes you reach across or walk all the way around from the driver's side

I had a truck like yours longhorn edition, etorque hemi with tow package 4x4 and no stability bars on the hitch.
…brought it to the CAT scale with the trailer. We were hauling a 24 foot 7’ interior with a slight v-nose and 2 axles- full to the gills to the front side door with a little space in the front for ballast.
Grand total weight was 18,100 pounds on the dot.
Trailer axle was showing 10,500 pounds on the dot.
Dialed in the attenuation on the trailer brakes from the dash with a few breaking tests…
Then we safely drove it from Illinois to Phoenix. No issues whatsoever with power torque anything except a huge fuel bill.
Needless to say, I’m framing that cat scale ticket.

    • @MartoriousMartuzzi
      @MartoriousMartuzzi  ปีที่แล้ว +1

I had the 2022 3500 with 6.4 did same route same hill. Did better yes. Working it’s butt off though. The long hills would catch up to it and the down grades were horrible to control in. But I’m used to diesels mostly which make this look like nothing. Maybe older 6.4 worked different.

@@davidmears1705 only engine that may be better is the 7.3 ford gasser. 6.4 is still a great torquey motor and you can deactivate the mds system that everyone hates so much.
