Air Lift Air Shocks Installation on a 2021 Ram 1500 Big Horn

  • Stop Squatting! Seriously! In my new 2021 Ram 1500 Big Horn I don't have any air shocks in the rear and if you know anything about Ram trucks, you know that's a problem when towing a travel trailer. Today I install the Air Lift manual air shocks to help stop the sagging rear end of my brand new truck.

    I just did my install yesterday. I didn't remove the wheels. I jacked up one side at a time to install the bags. Quick and simple. I located my air valve behind the fuel door.

    Purchased these Air lift shocks but could not get the truck high enough to get the springs off without compromising the brake line and was ready to return them. Watched several videos and yours was a game changer. It was extremely hard to fold and tie the bag and get it into the spring, but once in - all was very easy.. Much easier than the directions that came with them. He attached the tubing after getting the bag in and they were easy to connect with the wheel off. Thanks - ready to tow!

    You might want to start by completely resetting your W/D hitch on a surface that's as level as possible. If your trailer is sitting level like that in your driveway and your truck is comparably level with it, then your ball should be sitting about 1-inch higher than the coupler on the trailer before even connecting the trailer to it. And when you connect it with the W/D properly set up, the trailer should be sitting level and your truck might have a little sag, if any. I would suggest adding more spacers to pivot the head of your hitch more, that will distribute more weight evenly and the air bags will just be a redundancy instead of a necessity. Your tongue weight is 825lbs (really heavy), so you should be using probably all 6 spacers anyway. I have a Yukon XL with the same air bags as you and an E2 W/D hitch. Yukons are notorious for rear end sag when towing because they don't have as high of a payload as a typical 1/2 ton truck. I started with 4 spacers at 600lbs tongue weight, then moved to 5 and it sat pretty level. I only added airbags for when I tow my atv trailer, because even 350lbs of loaded tongue weight combined with the family and some gear made the rear sag about 1.5 inches below level.

    I just watched a video before this where the guy used the same air shock and tore the rear suspension apart to take the spring out to install the air spring. And you just did it the genius way. You have just convinced me to buy these. Thank you my friend.

    These airbags combined with a solid steel sway bar from Hellwig has made my towing experience much better. I’ll be adding a Gen-Y hitch next to top it all off.

    Thanks for the video. I'm getting reading to install on 2022 1500 Ram. Lot of comments on WD hitches. Yes they will eliminate squat and raise the front end but too much pressure but although unlikely, I've seen the V tongue buckle on some trailers. To level out mine with the WDH I really have to put alot of pressure on the tongue. With the airbags it will reduce the amount. Will still be using the WDH afterwards.

    Nice vid ... everyone should realize the equalizer hitch is paramount for towing..Installed these air bags, the same way. Front and rear bilstein shocks. E rated tires on my 2019 Ram with 3:92 rear end, instead of 3:21, and D rated , instead of C rated,on my toy hauler...absolutely night and day difference in towing performance . I think Ram puts crappy springs on so when you test drive it, it makes for a softer, smoother ride. I just bought HD springs AND an Air Lift for my '21. I have the luxury of putting the bags into the new springs before putting them on the truck 😁
    I had Air Lifts in my 3 previous Jeep Liberties. For anyone wondering, they work well during the winter too. I'm in Ottawa Canada eh. Plenty cold.

    Found this..
    Weight distribution hitches improve steering, braking capability and enhance vehicle control. Airbag systems provide adjustable suspension that is easily adapted for optimal driving. While there will be redundancies, these two systems can coexist and deliver an exceptional towing experience.

    • @dontburnthehousedownvideos
      @dontburnthehousedownvideos  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep! But what that didn't discuss is sway control. You NEED good sway control when towing a travel trailer. Several hitches also have sway control built in but others do not. Equilizer 4 is what I use and it's great. Airbags keep your ass end from squatting to the ground and the WD hitch (with sway control) keeps the trailer on the road and prevents wind from putting you in the ditch.

Looks like this was posted 3 yr ago, so it's probably a mute point, however I've run air ride air bags on several vehicles and have made the mistake of combining the bags into one inlet. • @dontburnthehousedownvideos
      @dontburnthehousedownvideos  ปีที่แล้ว

      The install is very easy and yes, the bags help dramatically with towing. But it's probably worth noting that the bags are meant to keep your truck level which means you'll have better steering control as well as less wear and tear on it. However, it's not going to let you tow something heavier than you should and it doesn't do much for sway control.

      I’m not 100% sure, but I’d say it’s much safer to have those on a single valve so that there’s no risk of having a bit more pressure on one side than the other. Also, if there’s any failure, it could create a dangerous towing situation if one side drops and the other maintains pressure.

    Must trucks have a 2-2.5 inch rake to the front for this reason. The rake is calculated so that with proper tongue weight the truck is near level. So 2inch squat means your tongue weight is not over limit.

    • @dontburnthehousedownvideos
      @dontburnthehousedownvideos  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's likely not over limit but when the RV is connected, the springs are at maximum compression and it's resting on the bump stops. At best, it's going to be a bumpy ride. At worst, it's going to cause steering issues.

      Dry weight of my trailer is around 6,500 lbs and max weight is around 8,500. My truck with the Hemi and 3.92 gears can tow north of 12k pounds. I would assume that if your towing capacity is that low, you likely have the highway gears in your rear differential (3.21). It's really important to understand the limitations of your truck and no, airbags will not allow you to put more weight on the truck. They simply help the rear end to not sag under a load. You still need to keep your payload under the capacity your truck can carry. Your axles can still snap like a twig if you overload.

    Just heard about these airbags and googled them. Then your video pops up. I have a couple questions. First, would a cigarette lighter air pump be enough to inflate the bags. • @dontburnthehousedownvideos
      @dontburnthehousedownvideos  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A cigarette lighter pump is more than enough to inflate them. I use a battery powered bike pump or a foot pump. Don't leave them inflated if you aren't towing because they will raise your rear end up a few inches and cause your headlights to point too far down. If you don't plan on driving, it's not an issue leaving them inflated. Be careful not to over inflate them also as you can pop an air line or fitting.

    • @dontburnthehousedownvideos
      @dontburnthehousedownvideos  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I inflate them to 40 psi right before I hook the trailer up. The trailer weighs about 8k lbs fully loaded. You want them to have air before the springs compress under the weight. Once I'm done towing I drop them to about 5-8 psi so they'll maintain their shape inside the springs but don't affect the ride quality or height. If you drive around with them inflated it raises your rear end up and points your headlights into the ground.

      They are working great! I have towed our travel trailer several times and they've performed flawlessly. I don't see a need to replace the stock shocks unless you have a personal preference. I bought a small handheld air compressor for when we are on the road and I'll set it to 45 psi, hook it up to the valve and let it inflate. The air bags really, really improve the ride and handling when the travel trailer is attached but you definitely need to deflate them once you lose the trailer. I have the Equalizer 4 and it let's me add washers to increase the downward angle of the arms, increasing friction on the bars and reducing sway. It does an amazing job of taking away down to almost nothing. Unless I'm getting hit with significant wind gusts, then I'll feel those. But it's always manageable.
