  • Here towards the end of his life, Granada TV invited The Guru of Halifax, the founder of Timeform, Phil Bull to expound on his theories, his views and his experiences. The program doesn't disappoint as it follows him at home and on the track.

I've been trying for years to get a copy of this, to no avail. I've always been a big admirer of Phil's. Many, many thanks for putting it up on here.

The joy of TH-cam!!! I know what it's like to find this kind of thing. My father had a documentary about Lester made about 1970 Nijinsky's year on tape and when he died he was left all his videos. That was to be the prize - alas it wasn't there my step mother had recorded an episode of Dallas over it. I'm still trying to find that video but I'm glad to have been of service to you.

I've read Phil Bull's life story ; he was an amazing man and a shrewd punter . His best gambling years were in the late 1940s and 50s . He said that latterly he was now in the 4th division ; his scattergun approach to backing three horses in the 1982 Derby bears witness to that belief , especially as Robert Sangster had told him how good Golden Fleece was held in the highest regard . Great man , sadly missed .

    If you can get 3/1 about a 6/4 chance it's a bet with a capital B.

Did well overall with the winners at York and Doncaster but his reading of the jockey club stakes was shocking. Even getting things wrong after the race. Ardross always going well.

Phil knew better than to bet on the strength of "tips", no matter who they came from. He wrote about it in his "commandments" section in "The Mathematics of Betting" back in the 40's.

Very interesting to a racing fan but how a non-racing fan would’ve found this interesting even then is a bit puzzling. The interludes from Freddie Jones didn’t work for me at all. Some quite amusing bits like PB getting the Derby all wrong, and Sheikh Hamdan seeming very uninterested in his prize presenting banter.

All punters, even someone as shrewd as Phil Bull are wrong more often than they are right. The Derby is always a potential banana skin for all of us, as the horses are so lightly raced by the beginning of June. No surprises though about Shake Handbag, all these arabs are miserable so-and so's, but he's got a face that would turn the milk sour.
