I remember growing up, the local sheriff was up for a new car and he could pick any car he wanted. He chose a two door Fury with a 440-6 barrel, in the local sheriff department color. His car didn't have any sheriff markings, just the color. He drove that car for about 10 years. I guess it was a GT, but I don't remember if it was GT marked, or maybe that went away, if it was repainted to match the sheriff department color. I aways thought it was odd he drove a two door car, but maybe that was the only way to get the 440-6 barrel.
In 1992 I was out looking to buy a Mopar and looked at and drove either a 69 or 70 ( not sure) Sport Fury GT with a 440 and factory 4 speed. At the same time a 70 Chrysler 300 Hurst came available and it was near mint. I opted for this one but I would love to have that old Plymouth today if I could find it.
@@ultimatemusclecar I recall him saying how rare it was and it all looked and drove legit. I had only driven 4 speed Mopars prior and this one was spot on. I had no idea at the time how rare it was. The Hurst was a cooler looking car and the condition was a solid 4/5 whereas the Fury was decent but more like a 2.5-3/5. The car was located in Calgary, Alberta.
I would have gone with the Hurst also, I think you made the correct choice. The 4-speed wasn't available for the 69-70 Sport Fury. Some people did 4-speed conversions using factory parts (pedals, bell crank etc) from 3-speed manual Fury cars which were shifted on the column. Using factory parts made it appear and feel correct. The GT didn't come with a 3-speed manual either but it was possible for the S23 with a 318 or 383 2 barrel without AC but not the 4 barrel.
You can only buy one. Which car would you choose?

Awesome story. Thanks for sharing!
Tough to pick a favorite but the GT does have the edge.
I agree. If money or space didn’t matter, Id take both of them. If I’m choosing one, the GT with the 440.
6 Pack car for me, with custom plates that say "6PKFURY". What an awesome beautiful tank, all the better with a Pistol grip 4 speed! Dream car!
Yep! I would be proud to have either one but the GT is the winner. Great video!
Thank you!

Cool story, I love the 300 Hurst also. That Sport Fury GT you drove was probably a 4-speed conversion by someone.

440 -6 pack has to be a very very rare car
Depending on the source they only produced 61 or 64 of the GTs with the 440 Six Barrel.
@@ultimatemusclecar any 1971s ever built ?
No but in '71 the high performance 440 came standard.
@@ultimatemusclecar thanks I like the odd ones .never see any at the car shows
